The house was definitely funk. There were so many things to look at, running the gambit of genres. The clean roomy house had a fully stocked kitchen, as well as a washer and dryer. There were 2 bicycles, which we used several times. The location was about 2 blocks from the bay and walking distance to town. We used the screen porch quite a bit. It was a short ride to the grocery stores and over to the beaches.
this is indeed a "funky" place, built in the 50s, with lots of interesting art on the walls and various kinds of collectibles. i travel a lot and am usually staying in hotels, so i missed having some things that are usually provided -- soap, shampoo, hairdryer, etc. -- but there's a walgreens around the corner to get whatever you need. also the AC wasn't working terribly well, but nancy was very responsive in coming over to try to fix it. in the end, we just put a fan in the bedroom and it was a bit warm but tolerable (nancy made the point that the other bedroom was cooler, but we already had our stuff in the master bedroom). the master bath is tiny but the water pressure in the shower is good, and she had plenty of towels available. the best part was the yard, which is fully fenced and shady even in the heat of the day so our 2 big labs could get outside a bit. nancy is for sure a dog person, and that made all the rest of the stuff inconsequential by comparison -- it's really hard to find hotels down here (or anywhere!) that allow you to bring along two 80-lb dogs, no matter how well behaved they are. it was too hot most days for us to walk to gulfport, but in cooler weather it would be a nice, walkable jaunt to beach drive, stores/restaurants, etc.
Very nice and convenient to shopping. The beds were very comfortable and the place was clean. We visited the Dali Museum , Fort Desoto State Park, had a great meal at Rumford restaurant which has an aquarium that holds 33,000 gallons of water featured on the show Tanked. If we had had more time I would have liked to have gone to the Sunken Gardens. I would definitely stay there again. We enjoyed the screened in porch and all the interesting artifacts in the house. Plenty of music , Wi-Fi access, and its own library with a chandelier in a closet. Oh yeah I forgot to mention bicycles as well for your convenience.
We've stayed in a lot of vacation homes, and this one ranks at the very top of our experiences. First, the house itself is just fun--the decoration is arty and quirky, and just a pleasure to be in. Here are the highlights if you are thinking of renting it:
1) It was also the most well-appointed kitchen I've ever had: it's clear Nancy actually cooks because anything I needed to prepare normal meals was there. There wasn't a ton of stuff, just the right stuff. Same can be said of all amenities--towels, beach gear, you name it.
2) It was clean. Enough said.
3) The bed was so comfortable! So was the lazy boy couch (we contemplated loading that up and brining it home ;) )
4) It's quiet. I guess it's that gulf coast, concrete construction. But I could mess around in the kitchen or living room early in the morning without waking my family. That was nice as I rise a few hours before anyone else.
5) It is only two block from the beach are and the cute Gulfport downtown. It's only 15 minutes from the more beachy St. Pete's beach too. It was also easy to get on the main road to the highway. We were very pleased with the location.
We would definitely recommend staying here!
The house was quite unique. Great layout, plenty of space. It was decorated with lots of interesting things. We enjoyed the screened porch area! The house was stocked with nearly everything you'd need which was great for us because we flew in(no need to pack beach towels, cooler, umbrella.....). Location was easily walkable to several restaurants and the beach area, although the local beach was not what we had envisioned. We ended up driving a short distance to St Pete beach (very nice). No big deal. Overall, the place was a low key, quiet area. Perfect for a relaxing vacation.
This was an excellent house for my family and dogs to stay at. There was plenty of room for all of us. The only thing you would need to get are groceries as everything else Nancy has in the house. The backyard is fenced and was perfect for our dogs. The location is great as it is close to the beaches restaurants and shopping. This was such a fun house to stay at. We will definitely be back!
Friendly beachside community. Numerous local activities, A 'main street' downtown area with restaurants,
coffee shop, outdoor gathering spot with local music talent, shops etc. Bi-monthly Art Walks, many festivals, 4th of July old time parade with fireworks over the bay. Active, active community, everchanging but always people, community oriented. If your looking for laid back, old time Florida fun time Gulfport is for you. Surrounding communities are the typical professional resorts styled places, Gulfport is a gem for old style fun. Step out of Gulfport at your own risk, returning to cilvilization is not recommended.
Other Activities: dancing, volleyball, kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding
