Overview

About the property

4 bedrooms, 3.5 baths, sleeps 10-12 - add the barn apartment for even more space

'Glen Eastern' has an awesome lake view and is about a mile from 'Downtown Watkins'. Home to the magnificent Watkins Glen State Park, Harbor Walk, International Raceway, visitor center, Clute Beach and a more than a few places to rent & launch boats. We are in the heart of the Finger Lakes wine & waterfall country. Glen Eastern has 4 BR & 3.5 baths. It sleeps 10-12 and is more of a family style home on 8 fun acres; the Monster Barn game room is now open offering billiards, foosball, darts, a 10ft granite saloon wet bar and classic arcade game. The deck offers panoramic views of the lake, sunsets & Watkins night lights. Enjoy the horseshoe and fire pits, multiple picnic tables, hammock and covered lower patio. The location is perfect for large family gatherings. There is also another apartment available in the barn with a full bath, kitchen, bedroom and living room for even larger parties of 12 - 14.

LOCATION - LOCATION - LOCATION: At about a mile from downtown Watkins Glen and twenty or so from Corning, Ithaca and Elmira, you will find plenty to do at our rental properties. There are well over fifty wineries within 40 miles - close to a hundred waterfalls - and day trips can take you to Niagara Falls, Casinos, ten other Finger Lakes and the Great Lakes. We have been coming here for close to ten years and still haven't seen it all.

ALL SEASONS WELCOME: The wineries don't shut down for the winter and neither do we! The spring brings great scenery and waterfalls, the summer has it all and the fall has leaves and wine to enjoy. But don't forget the winter and holiday season, when the Seneca wineries promote Deck the Halls and winter wine specials. Cayuga also has quite a few wineries with Mardi Gras, fine food pairings and individual winery promotions. Don't forget to bring your boat in the warmer months and your snowmobile & skis in the winter. The Finger Lakes National Forest has extensive winter snowmobiling trails as well as cross country and there are two ski areas about an hour away.

JUST LIKE HOME: We use all three of our vacation homes in the area and want you to feel like you are at your second home (just like we do). That's why we have people returning again and again, and trying out our various locations. Each is unique but well appointed and offer the same convenient location and amenities.

Please note: there is a $195 cleaning and linen fee for the main house. The barn apartment has a $75 cleaning and linen fee.

About Tom Schneider

Having visited many wine regions around the world (Rhine River Valley in Germany, Napa/Sonoma in US, Tuscany in Italy, and Hunter Valley in Austraila), we decided to explore the Finger Lake Wine region. We really enjoyed it due to its wonderful wines, beautiful views and amazing waterfalls. With a growing family, we decided to purchase our first property in 2006. In years following, we added two more properties and we continue to improve all of them so our expanded family and our guests (YOU!) can enjoy the Finger Lakes to its fullest potential. The Monster Bar'N Gameroom and Barn Apartment are two examples of how we continually improve our properties. We love to visit the wineries year round for their seasonal events and have camp fires & S'mores in the summertime and boating and hiking at the local Glens (Watkins, Buttermilk and Havana to name a few). One of our most favorite annual events is to participate in the Watkins Glen Cardboard Boat Regatta - check local papers for our 2010 Pirate Ship entry which made front page headlines (see image of Pirate Ship).

Tom Schneider purchased this house in 2006

Why Tom Schneider chose Seneca Lake

With a growing family, we knew it would be harder to travel like we were used too. With the Finger Lakes as close as they were and offering wineries, waterfalls and lakes, we decided it would be a wonderful place to vacation. After two years of enjoying our home ourselves, we decided to try renting to allow others to enjoy this wonderful property and region of the country. We found that we enjoyed it so much that we decided to continue to expand our properties to serve even more people. We feel our properties allow all our guests to select which type of property will work for them and their vacation plans.

What makes this house unique

The game room is loads of fun and the outdoor space is great too. Such convenience to Watkins Glen and several other Finger Lake hamlets & towns is a rare find on the wine trail.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Tom and JJ,

We couldn't be happier about our vacation at Glen Eastern. The house was perfect. The kids were happy just playing in the yard. My mother loved sitting on the porch watching the birds and lake scenery- and we all enjoyed the many activities and things to do in the area. We did the wine trail and your convenient location allowed us to do most of them while we were there. We must come back to do the rest ;-).

The native peoples say that the Finger Lakes were created by their god placing his hand upon the earth. Today the Finger Lakes are home to some of the best NY State wineries, crystal clear lakes, waterfalls and all season activities. Almost all of the wineries and breweries are open year round. Watkins Glen offers a variety of shops, bars and restaurants with a quaint downtown area and harbor walk. Follow the Catherine Creek trail all the way to Horse Heads and enjoy some of the best fly fishing on the planet. Take a power boat or sailing excursion on the deepest lake in the US - west of the Rockies. Head south to Corning for the famous Museum of Glass and enjoy the Market Street attractions, brew houses and gastro pubs. Then turn east and head to Ithaca for the day to enjoy all the college town has to offer. Niagara Falls and the Baseball Hall of Fame are both just a day trip away. Two ski areas, ample snowmobiling and hunting will keep you entertained during the winter months. Come to the Finger Lakes and see what the area has to offer - and enjoy one of the places we call home.

miserably maintained but could have potential

  • 2 of 5

First we didn't receive codes or info prior to arrival. When we did arrive, the place was trashed. There was trash overflowing the cans. Beds were unmade. Dishes unwashed. Floors unvacuumed and unswept. Lawn unmowed. Weeds unpulled. Not just so-so service, there was clearly NO SERVICE since some sort of extremely sloppy previous guests left. I don't know how they were so unprepared. After calling the manager they did come and clean for 2 hours that evening (delaying our "start" of vacation) and then they said they'd come back the next day for a few hours, we planned to be out during that time They apparently came but what they did wasn't entirely apparent. (I think they poured pine-sol in the sinks to make it smell like they cleaned. I've done that trick myself to get refund back from apartment deposits when I was in college...) Even if stuff was in better shape when we arrived I would have still concluded that at some time they need to do more thorough cleanings where they dust the baseboards and the bathroom fans. Clean out the kitchen cabinets. Wipe down light-switches. Things get grimy and the weekly change-out crew doesn't get these things.

That said, the house layout and location was very well suited to our crowd.

We had 3 families with small-medium aged children. The description when we started was a little outdated and confusing to me but what we found was: one master bedroom w/ master bath upstairs. The upstairs has two additional bedrooms each with two twin bed options. On the main floor there was a kitchen/dining and living area with many access points to a wrap-around deck. The lower level was walk out. It had one quartered off room with a queen bed and then the rest of the downstairs was an open space/family room/kitchenette. The "couch" in that space was a futon. The barn apartment is a queen sized room attached to another small apartment. The game room is a large concrete room with some fun stuff (but again, trashed when we arrived.) There are lots of games, gaming systems, electronics, lawn stuff to use-which is nice. It's in a little bit of disarray so don't expect a scrabble game with 100 tiles or that 1000 piece puzzle to be complete but there's a lot and it's nice.

As a group we ventured out to hike the different gorges or parks during the day. Did some wineries. Hung at the apartment in the evening. The location suited us well.

So...I see so much potential. It needs *much* better managed

Owner's Response: Adrienne. I certainly apologize for the condition of the home when you arrived. As it turned out the cleaner had not been there and had not checked her schedule. We have let the cleaner go. We where very embarrassed as we like the place hotel ready when you arrive. As you noted not all our guest leave the place that well. the Property Manger responded as quickly as she could and made up fresh beds and a quick cleaning of the bathrooms and vacuumed. She also returned the next day to finish. Since your stay we now have the Property Manager stop at each rental to ensure it was cleaned by the cleaners. The cleaners are scheduled and several are needed to turn over this residence when we have a short turn around time. The entire home and barn apartment and rec room have had a through cleaning and all repairs that could be found repaired. The lawn is on a regular mowing schedule and we did speak to them about the need to increase the trimming work in the yard. The additional landscaping was also addressed. We are glad you where able to enjoy your vacation after the issues where addressed. Watkins Glen is a beautiful area and this house has the best views of the village and lake. We also appreciate any comments so these issues can be correct. Again, we apologize for these issues and I think you will find that this condition is the exception NOT the rule at our properties. We always want our guests to enjoy their stay and we offer you a 10% discount on your next stay should you decide to return.

Beautiful Location

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Glen Eastern was simply wonderful with the most beautiful view of Seneca Lake. The home was clean and we only had a few minor issues such as burnt out light bulbs that Tom addressed when we notified him. We would certainly stay here again and can't say enough about the beautiful view and convenient location to all that Watkins Glen has to offer. We did conserve water as suggested and had no real issues with this and there were 9 women. The one room had very small beds that were more youth size than we anticipated, but not a big problem for us. The kitchen was well stocked with pots/pans/dishes. The ice maker did not seem to work, but there was a fresh bag of ice, so again this was not a problem for our short stay.

Loved the wineries, Jeraldo's restaurant, and the gorge was breathtaking.
