This house rents Sunday to Sunday to escape the Saturday on and off Cape traffic.
House is south of rt 28. Access to 40 miles of Cape Cod Rail Trail bike path is across the way.
The House: If you want privacy, romance, fun for kids, a relaxed and natural atmosphere, you enjoy camping and being outdoors and nature and the woods, this is the perfect house. If you want a hotel experience, air conditioning, manicured grounds, this is not the house for you. This is a cape cod cottage (built in 1952) and an unfinished, rustic barn. It is a casual and relaxed place. We cater to families with kids.
There is easy access to the bike path, so you don't need to drive there with bikes. You can bike or walk to the beach in under fifteen minutes. There is a great tree swing for kids, a little tree house perch for kids and adults (we sit there and drink tea), a truly romantic claw-foot bathtub in the barn bedroom complete with scented candles and a terrycloth bathrobe, the seating area on the deck with strings of lights in the trees makes the outdoors magical, the loft is well-loved by kids of all ages and provides a wonderful place to hang out, play games, put on plays for the adults downstairs in the living room, write on the chalk-board ceiling, have privacy, make mischief. The kitchen is well stocked, there are plenty of games including croquet and badminton.
The Barn : The barn has a large (18 x 24) second floor bedroom which can sleep parents and kid (there is a queen size bed as well as a single.) The barn consists of a bathroom (curtained off, there are no walls), clawfoot tub, outdoor showe, small kitchen with no stove, but coffeemaker, microwave, toaster oven, fridge, Weber gas grill on the back deck. The barn is rustic. Some people love barns. If you don't this is not the right property for you. Please email for more photos.
Everyone tells us that they could spend their entire vacation without ever leaving the truly private property.
Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge: Also in Chatham (from Fodors)
Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge is a quiet, peaceful place of sand and beach grass, tidal flats, dunes, marshes, freshwater ponds, thickets of bayberry and beach plum. Several groups conduct tours of the islands, including the Massachusetts Audubon Society, many with a focus on bird-watching. In season, the Rip Ryder will take you over from Chatham for bird- or seal-watching tours; private charters are also available. Another excellent option is Monomoy Island Excursions, which offers seal and seabird tours and boat trips out around Monomoy Island, leaving from Saquatucket Harbor on a 43-foot high-speed catamaran. Outermost Adventures also provides water taxi services out to Monomoy Island and offers fishing, birding, and seal-watching cruises.

About Susan Shepherd
Barry Payne is from Kenya and spent his childhood camping, going on adventures and living in nature. We both love the outdoors and think of our house and barn as an extension of that. I'm a public radio producer, and have lived in Massachusetts my entire adult life. We both kitesurf, paddleboard, kayak and surf.
Why Susan Shepherd chose West Chatham
You can walk to the beach, restaurants, the bike path, while having a vacation in total privacy surrounded by nature without seeing anyone else if that's what you want. The bike path means you never have to get in your car if you don't want to. We love riding to nearby White pond for an afternoon swim. It's pretty secluded and often there's no one else swimming there. It's the perfect way to end the day before a wonderful cookout on the deck, and a campfire on a cool evening, or a family ping pong tournament in the barn.
What makes this House unique
The house is on an acre and a half, which is very rare for the Cape and Chatham, so it is completely private, nestled among beautiful old trees. The porch is on the second story on the back of the house so you are sitting in the tree tops. The house is on a dirt cul-de-sac with only a few other houses, which you can't see from this property. We love having a separate space in the barn, and when we have guests my husband and I always choose the barn bedroom, which is cozy and quiet and a great getaway from whatever is happening in the house. As soon as we drove onto the property we knew this was the house for us.

Great, secluded property!
We had a 5-night stay over the Columbus Day weekend, and absolutely loved the place! We are only two adults plus a large dog, so the size was more than we needed, but the private yard was just wonderful for us. While there are four bedrooms, one is in the barn and one is a loft, so the main living area was a comfortable size for the three of us. We enjoyed the large sunny deck on the main house, the firepit in the yard, and the ping-pong table in the barn. Didn't try the hot tub (behind the barn), but it looks to be well maintained.
We have visited the cape at least once a year since 1999, staying in a variety of inns and rental homes, and this one stands out as our favorite so far... hope to come back next year!
Quaint seclusion, with beach access
We planned a 2-night stay for Columbus Day weekend as a sort of whim, with our only knowledge of Chatham from a few day-trips years ago. This little house and barn are amazing -- wish we had had more time and more people, because there was more than we could take in. My wife loved the very comfortable furnishings, my 13-yr old son spent hours doing flips on the trampoline, and my mother sat and read on the sunny porch. All the facilities (including hot tub under the stars, fire pit, and out-door shower) are very well-maintained, and Sue recommended great restaurants. And of course quick access to the beach did the rest. It's the kind of unique place that stays in your consciousness, long after the adventure is over. We hope to go back . . . often !
Very private and comfortable!
Though we've stayed on the Cape many times, this was our first stay in Chatham and we loved it! Susan was more than accommodating, giving us great activity and restaurant suggestions and going out of her way to make sure we had everything we needed during our stay. Our favorite part of the property was the outdoors and yard. The deck was perfect for alfresco meals and we loved the outdoor shower, the firepit, and the hot tub. (As kids as heart, we even jumped a bit on the trampoline and used it as a star-gazing platform!) We loved how private the property was and the fact that we could bring our dog along just capped the week for us--we'll definitely be back!
Just a Wonderful stay, Every time
This has become the vacation spot our family looks forward to every year. The house is just wonderful. So full of character and charm and warmth. Every time we come back to it we feel like we are coming home. The kids love their loft and all the games they play there. We walk down to the pie shop to get delicious desserts and meat pies, we ride bikes on the scenic trail that goes for miles and miles. There are just so many things to do close by; beach lighthouse, great downtown area. The porch and the backyard are favorite places for us to hangout. At night we use the grill and roast marshmallows.
Ou children talk about this wonderful house in Cape Cod all year long. It's such an amazing adventure for them, and a beautiful, relaxing experience for us. We'd recommend it for anyone seeking the perfect family vacation.
memories from here last the whole year
My family love to go here once a year. We look forward to it all year. A typical day starts off with us waking up with coffee on the deck and the kids on the swing in their pajamas or just playing in the yard on their bikes far away from traffic and even further away from iPads and video games. Then we usually go downtown, to the park, to the train museum, to the beach, on long bike rides, on hikes, to go see the seals, there's always something fun to do in Chatham. In the evenings we have barbecues and campfires or sometimes we go on date nights thanks to "Summer Sitters". Staying in is fun too. There are a lot of board games, puzzles, and peaceful things to do but there's also WiFi and apple tv. The house is beautiful. It is very clean and comfortable and everything is right where you would expect it to be. Also it looks like it is out of a magazine. It is decorated in very beautiful boho chic. I can't stand up about it we miss it already we've been home for about 2 weeks and we wish we were still there!
Our memories here last the whole year!
We love our yearly retreat to this place. Our typical day is to wake up in the quiet woods, the kids immediately run outside in their pyjamas and start playing on the swing and in the huge yard. We have our coffee on the beautiful deck and make our plans for the day. We usually go for bike rides on the bike path down the street or jogs to the ice cream shop, we explore downtown, go see the seals, go to the playground, the train museum, the green market, the beach. We have cookouts, campfires, relax in the hot tub. The house is clean, well-maintained, user-friendly, and simply gorgeous. It's decorated in a very artsy boho style and it is so comfortable! I highly recommend it!
Chatham has received the 'Distinctive Destinations Award Recipient' from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Its waters and history are diverse and unique. The Cockle Cove community of South Chatham is the best kept secret; rural and surrounded by vital marshlands including a salt water pond and channel to Nantucket Sound large enough for a 21' outboard center console sport fishing boat. An awe inspiring 15 minute kayak ride brings you to the mouth of Eel Creek also known as 'The Jetty', a remote stretch of barrier beach there brings you even closer to nature and further from the crowds. Swimming is warmed by the Gulf Stream. It hosts a large variety of birds, fish and other animals striped bass, bluefish, snowy Egrets, Blue Heron, King Fisher, Osprey, Great Horned Owl, Red-tail Hawk and many migratory seabirds. From Chatham you can paddle board, windsurf, kayak, boat out to Monomoy, ride 40 miles on the bike path, skydive, fly over the cape on a scenic plane ride, drive to Provincetown for a Whale Watch, take a day trip to Nantucket on the nearby ferry, go clamming in one of the many estuaries, swim in a pond, drive to the National Seashore to learn how to surf. A week in Chatham is never enough.
