This lake house is our personal vacation home and is one of the original homes on the lake. It has been in my husband's family since 1965. We purchased it from his Grandparents in 2004.
The house was wonderful. Had everything we needed and the landscaping was nicely done. The beach area was wonderful for kids
We love staying here for a week every summer. We enjoy floating/swimming in the lake every day, right out the back door. We use the canoe, floating dock, firepit, dock for fishing and rent a pontoon boat and paddle board from the marina around the corner. It is great to get away!
The property looks just like it does in the online pictures. We had a very nice vacation. The lake is amazing as well as the outdoor property. The inside could use a little tlc but overall is a nice place to stay.
Stayed with 4 adults, 4 kids ages 3-6. The beach was so perfect for us. The sand was soft and the kids could build castles and splash around and swim out to the floating dock. They could wade out pretty far before it got too deep to stand. The water at the docks was deep enough to dive into, maybe 8 feet. The neighbors were not around this week so we actually had an entirely private beach for a whole week. I've never stayed anywhere with a completely private beach like this, it was very nice.
The house and property were in pristine condition when we arrived. They must have an awesome cleaning company. The house had plenty of kitchen items so we could cook whatever we wanted. Everything in the house worked as it should. The blender was a little tired, but even that got the job done. There were some things left by the previous family like a bit of hand soap and a couple rolls of TP and paper towels to get us started, but that's probably up to the people who are leaving. Someone even left popsicles which was a pleasant surprise after the 4 year old split her lip soon after arrival. There were more than enough pillows and blankets for us.
We did get a couple ticks during the week, including an insanely enormous dog tick on the 4 year old the first day that she got somewhere on this property so be sure to have good bug spray and remember to actually use it. The mosquitoes were not bad. There was plenty of room for 8 people. Note with little kids there are no rails installed on the upper bunks (to prevent falling out). I saw one half metal rail in the closet but we didn't try to put it up. Instead we put 2 kids in each of the 2 rooms. The table on the porch could have easily fit 12 people.
We are excited to come here again hopefully next year! Our 4 year old cried more when it was time to leave than she did over the tick or the split lip. Our 6 year old decided this trip was better than our trip to Disney World. I have to agree, it was way more relaxing.
I do not believe the previous reviews and/or photos gave this property justice! Oh my goodness! The house was perfect! The property was perfect! The beach was perfect! The dock was perfect! The deck was perfect! I honestly cannot say enough! Smith Mt Lake was beautiful and the water so clear. If SML was not such a drive from Columbus, OH (pulling a boat) we would definitely go back to this house year after year after year. The property is so perfect we adults could actually relax with a 5 and 3 year old! (you could see them from any/every point in the back area). The kids LOVED the beach and sand (such nice sand for a lake!). We were there the first week of June and the water was warm (we were afraid the water would be too cold) but it was warm enough for kids and adults alike (kids will swim in any temperature, however, adults are more discerning and we were all able to swim). Loved the screened in porch too. Lastly, the mature trees gave us lots of shade (for coffee in the morning) but we had lots of sun on the beach. There is nothing about this property that I would change!
Your position on the lake is perfect! Minimal boat congestion and privacy in the cove made for great swimming and floating. The outside areas are perfect - we played numerous lawn games in the sand, built several fires and enjoyed playing games in the screened porch. The bedrooms and living room is spacious but the kitchen is tiny but functional. We can't wait to visit again next year! One suggestion - it would be helpful to have a large covered trash can outside the house so you don't have to go to the dump every day. Other than that we loved the house and our stay at Regan's Retreat!
House is located in Huddleston between the Smith Mountain Lake State Park and the Parkway Marina off of Route 626. Our cove is between Markers R6 & R8.
