House, 2 Bedrooms + Detached Unit, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-10)
This is a true Mountain Oasis in the desert at the Joshua Tree National Park entrance:
One property, one bedroom house, extra sleeping in living room, and private-entrance guest quarters, plus a detached art studio for recreation and extra sleeping.
The house is a colorfully-painted ranch style, with mostly glass walls facing the mountain views in the back yard, with private entrance guest quarters and bath, plus a detached art studio for work, play, and/or extra sleeping.
Get away from the world, no TV. However, we now have WIFI. All that is avail in town for emergencies, but this is a real desert-mountain retreat.
The house is one big room with living room, fire place, kitchen, and sunken area for enjoying the Mountain View with a separate and private master bedroom off the living room area.
And the other side of the open space holds the dining area with a hallway off to the bath. Through the colonnade and down the path are the guest quarters, a single large bedroom with Mountain View and bath.
There is an art studio next to it, with a convertible bed and day bed for extra sleeping.
Enjoy the orchard of 8 fruit trees, garden, large pine trees, and many other trees, cactus, and other desert plants.
There is lots of shade for lazy orchard naps in the hammock after lunch prepared in the outdoor kitchen.
You can spend early evenings in the hot tubs, among the rocks, after hiking, rock climbing, or just driving through the gorgeous Joshua Tree Park. Or after horse back riding available down the road.
There are restaurants, art galleries, live theatre, music festivals, and we are only 25 minutes from Desert Hot Springs and its famous hot tubs and pool where you can spend the day for one small price.
Further we are 35 minutes from Palm Springs its airport, spas, golf courses, arts and culture.
The Salton Sea is an 1 1/2 hrs away with fishing, swimming, and boating. LA and the Ocean communities are 2 1/2 hrs away for a great day trip.
The Wild Flower season is in the spring, and everything is in bloom, and people come from all over the country to see it. The fall and winter the area is a mecca for the rock climbers and mild weather fans. So, spend a week or a weekend in this beautiful desert Oasis.

Why Larry chose Monument Manor
Joshua Tree is a spiritual and vacation mecca.
What makes this House unique
This is a unique location nestled into the border with the park. It is private and beautiful. You have the Park to explore, or you can just sit in the yard or amongst the numerous boulders on the property and be part of it. Or you can sit in the oasis of gardens, pine trees, and fruit orchard. It is a very special place.

A Magical Location
The ambiance of the house and surrounding desert scenery are wonderful. The house is a little run down but when you get past that you can see the beauty all around.
Beautiful adventure house
This property is a hidden gem. Many thanks for the much needed chance to commune with nature. This is a very special little compound tucked away right on the edge of the park. The accommodations exceeded our expectations - very grateful the space and memories.
Can't wait to return
This is a beautiful, remote getaway that is also cozy, down to earth and exceedingly wild. Colorful rooms with the backdrop of dramatic desert scenery, smooth plaster and terra cotta, fireplaces, wild gardens with big trees, a hot tub - it is all that my desert dream life could have imagined and more. Larry and Tim were very helpful and accessible throughout the process. Thank you so much for having us!
Superb location to park and local wildlife.
We loved the serenity of the property. Bird watching and listening to coyotes!
Would like to see another kitchen counter/small island for food prep.
Dirty, not well maintained, use at your own risk
The lack of cleanliness and maintenance made many of us uncomfortable. Prefer to avoid a harmful review and instead see some action taken so others are not disappointed but did not hear back directly. There is a rodent problem in the main house but the open food bags and rodent droppings have not been attended to. This is a human health concern. The faucets unfortunately need replacing not repairing, however Tim (caretaker) spent some time fixing while we were there and that fix lasted one day. The bathroom faucets were a challenge in both main house and guest house. Older guests and children could not turn on unless taps were left loose (which meant constant water waste until another family member came to help). The surroundings helped us take our minds off the lack of maintenance and cleaning but it is worth noting for Larry to make the necessary changes. The units need a thorough and deep cleaning. All bedding needs to be washed. In the artist retreat, the bedding was too dirty to use. Dog feces were found on the grounds (not picked up after previous guests) and recycling strewn about by wind outside garage (left from last guest). This place needs some attention and it would be great but expecting that guests will clean prior to use is not acceptable. The 1/2 broom in the main house left for guests to use is a challenge (replace). Please clean this rental carefully and check that cleaners have done a good job. Many thanks to Tim for attempting to remedy some issues.
A perfect setting for a family getaway!
The setting could not be more beautiful. The layout of the property is quirky, but the location is perfect (it's a lot of dirt roads to get there so if it rains and you don't have 4WD you could get stuck). You could easily spend 2 days exploring the boulders around the property--even though the rocks to west are off limits, there are plenty of other places to roam. The inside of the property is not all that nice. The bedding seemed old and a bit dirty (we washed our sheets and if we go again, would just bring our own bedding). The kitchen is cramped and very difficult to cook for a large group, but we brought in an outside table to use as an island and that seemed to do the trick. (A portable island would be a good addition!).
There is enough privacy for 4 adult couples if all the kids sleep in the living room in the main house. However, the room over the garage and the art studio have no bathrooms, so if you go, be prepared to commune with nature when it calls or bring a flashlight to make the walk to the main house. I tend to prefer privacy and a bathroom, so for me, I would not want to stay in the art studio or above the garage.
Overall, I would definitely return with the right group of people (i.e. those that would be okay with me staying in one of the private rooms). Tim, the caretaker was great and very helpful and we had a fabulous time.
