Overview

High Country & Blue Ridge Mountains Cottage Rental Photos and Description

2 Bedrooms + 2.5 Baths (Sleeps 4)

Built upon the original 'Potato House', this luxurious cottage has beautiful wood beams and bark construction. Boulders surround this unique place, with a private hot tub hidden away from the road, but not from the view! Situated just outside Banner Elk and a neighboring vineyard, this oasis sits amidst a 43 acre farm that has been preserved through a conservation easement. From the front porch, there is a tremendous pastoral view with Grandfather Mountain in the distance. This view is so striking it has been used in commercial calendars. The cottage overlooks a tranquil farm scene with a beautiful barn and pond across the road. Private trails climb behind the cottage to the back side of Beech Mountain, while a unique walk through the Rhododendron thicket below the pasture lies in front of you. (No Smoking, No Pets, No Parties and NO children)

Suitability:
  • Low Allergen Environment
  • Minimum Age Limit for Renters
  • non smoking only
  • not suitable for children

About John Schisler

I'm John Schisler, the owner of Potato House. This property belonged to my Aunt and Uncle who were avid environmentalists. I fell in love with its beauty in college, and helped them establish an easement on the property so the peaceful feeling and incredible view would never be spoiled. I share this 'potato house' with you so I can maintain this special place and protect it from development! I also like the local winery and restaurants!

John Schisler purchased this cottage in 2005

Why John Schisler chose High Country & Blue Ridge Mountains

This area has a wonderful balance of incredible hiking and excellent entertainment.

It is the most amazing place on earth. The house has everything a couple could want.

We have been going for a week twice a year since 2010. It seems every year the owner makes little improvements here and there which is amazing in itself because it was so nice the very first stay. Our vacations are different in that we totally unplug from phones, computers, etc and just sleep late, walk up the mountain, read books and take in a dinner in town (many good places) except for two nights we have dinner on the deck. We usually watch the sun set with a glass of wine in the hot tub and end or evening the same way. One night after a candle light dinner on the deck we just got a blanket and watched the ever changing clouds finally turn to night and then one by one watched stars appear until deep in the night. We have amazing conversations and amazing times of solitude. God has impressed upon us all the beauty he created from the three state view at the top of the mountain to the deer we occasionally see in the year. We also see His playfulness in the chipmunks chasing each other around the hot tub rocks or outdoor fireplace or the birds calling out to each other. I have read more books sitting on the wonderful deck in the last five years than my whole life combined. If you are in love with your spouse and appreciate beauty in all of its forms then this is the place for you - just not during the weeks we have it ;-)

Charming cabin with beautiful views!!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I traveled up to the Mountain to celebrate her birthday and luckily we found the Potato house. This cabin was immaculate!! We own a property maintenance company in Charleston, SC and handle maintenance and weekly turnover for several high-end vacation rentals. We are very critical when it comes to cleanliness; this place was clean. The home was well appointed and decorated nicely. The hot tub and fireplace overlooking the beautiful mountain views truly make this a special place. We will certainly return!!

Tranquil and Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

This was our 2nd trip to the "Potato House". Last year, we also gave our friends a couple of nights at the house as a gift. The view of Grandfather Mountain in the distance and the area around the house are picturesque. The home is well appointed. The beds and pillows are extremely comfortable. The hot tub is amazing after a day of hiking. (After our friends visited the house, they bought a hot tub like it) The outdoor fireplace is nice too. (This was an addition since our last visit) We enjoyed a couple of exceptional meals in the village of Banner Elk. One at the Banner Elk Cafe; the other at Stonewalls. Before doing some hiking on the Blue Ridge Parkway (Tanawha Trail and Green Knob Trail), we also enjoyed a good meal at Crista's Deli. Conner with Eagle Creek Outfitters in Boone provided us with a great 1/2 day of fly fishing in Elizabethton, TN and later we hiked at Roan Mountain, TN. We also visited the Original Mast General Store in scenic Valle Crucis and enjoyed lunch at Our Daily Bread and antique shopping in Boone. During our previous stay, we visited Grandfather Mountain, Linville Falls, and Linville Gorge. I mention our activities because the location is off the beaten path but central to a lot of things. During our week there, we enjoyed mostly sunny days. The one day it was rainy, we cooked, enjoyed a bottle of wine and rested from 3 days of hiking. We even got to enjoy some snow on our last night. The pond is not only pretty to look at, it attracts wildlife: Deer, fox, mallards, geese, etc.... It was a great Anniversary Trip for me and my husband. With two very comfortable king size beds and two bathrooms, it is perfect for two couples. Marjy, the property manager is very easy to work with. I would highly recommend this property to anyone.

Great tucked away cabin close to town! Amazing grounds and views!

  • 5 of 5

We loved the property. The views were great and the grounds are hard to beat. Wonderful views from the deck and hot tub too.

Great spot for a small family or a getaway for 1-2 couples.

About a 10 min drive to town and probably 15 min from skiing at either Sugar or Beech.

Bed and pillows were amazing too, it's been my experience with rentals that is not always the case but we slept great and woke up refreshed.

Thanks!

Wonderful vacation spot, beautiful home!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great weekend at the Potato House. The view is beautiful. We hiked the trail in the backyard to the top to an awesome view in the clouds. The hot tub was very inviting afterwards. It is in a good location to drive to go snow tubing or skiing or do more hiking. The roads are well maintained since it did snow while we were there. We enjoyed are stay and would return here.

Quite a Delight

  • 5 of 5

Our long weekend at the Potato House was perfect! Not only was the weather sunny and 65 all weekend (for mid December, mind you), but the accommodations were everything we could've asked for, and more. The house was immaculate and the views from the balcony deck were breathtaking. The hot tub and outdoor fireplace was just what the doctor ordered in the evenings, as well as after our hike to MacRae Peak at Grandfather Mountain. Being walking distance to Banner Elk Winery was a plus, too ;)

We will definitely be staying at Potato House for our mountain trips in the future and would recommend it to everyone! Thank you!!
