Romantic Rhododendron and Bark Getaway with Great Views of Grandfather Mountain

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,100 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 1 - 4 nights

About the property

2 Bedrooms + 2 Baths (Sleeps 4)

Built upon the original 'Potato House', this luxurious cottage has beautiful wood beams and bark construction. Boulders surround this unique place, with a private hot tub hidden away from the road, but not from the view! Situated just outside Banner Elk and a neighboring vineyard, this oasis sits amidst a 43 acre farm that has been preserved through a conservation easement. From the front porch, there is a tremendous pastoral view with Grandfather Mountain in the distance. This view is so striking it has been used in commercial calendars. The cottage overlooks a tranquil farm scene with a beautiful barn and pond across the road. Private trails climb behind the cottage to the back side of Beech Mountain, while a unique walk through the Rhododendron thicket below the pasture lies in front of you. (No Smoking, No Pets, No Parties and NO children)

About John Schisler

I'm John Schisler, the owner of Potato House. This property belonged to my Aunt and Uncle who were avid environmentalists. I fell in love with its beauty in college, and helped them establish an easement on the property so the peaceful feeling and incredible view would never be spoiled. I share this 'potato house' with you so I can maintain this special place and protect it from development! I also like the local winery and restaurants!

John Schisler purchased this cottage in 2005

Why John Schisler chose Banner Elk

This area has a wonderful balance of incredible hiking and excellent entertainment.

Everything you could want and more....

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing time at the Potato House Thanksgiving week. Everything was well stocked, easy to bounce around to local hikes, restaurants, and nothing better than the simply relaxing with the view, outdoor fireplace and hot tub. The cabin was the nicest we have stayed in to date and we look forward to coming back again soon. It was perfect for a romantic weekend away and plenty of space if you were there with two couples. The owner was awesome and responsive with questions about the house and area and even fedex'd a coat I left behind in the closet. We highly recommend this 5 star cabin!!!

Winter Stay

  • 4 of 5

We planned a short trip to the Carolina Mountains for hiking and skiing. The weather was most favorable for skiing but much too cold for the hike. The cottage is very well maintained and well equipped. Both indoor gas fireplace and outdoor wood burning fireplace was a nice touch for those cold days. The hot tub was also a nice feature after skiing all day. The location was a short drive to all attractions and secluded just enough. The only comments I would add is to have a sectional couch in the man cave for a common gathering location for all as the dining area is compact . There are two driveways, upper and lower but you are either backing down them or pulling in and backing out onto the road when leaving, not sure if anything can be addressed on that issue. This is a perfect place for a couples getaway

Owner's Response: Gregg - we are sorry you didn't realize you can do a K-turn in the upper driveway.

Quiet and clean with a variety of personal touches. Everything you would need to relax!!!

Very enjoyable stay. Will be staying again when we have the chance. It was very neat and clean. Great place for a couple to get away. The cabin equipped with everything you need including the softest sheets we have ever slept in. Heated bathroom floors were amazing. An experience to be had sitting in the hot tub watching nature literally walk up to the property. The location is central to Banner Elk, Boone, and other quick day drives. This was our first experience using VRBO and the owner kept us well informed and answered all our questions. Great first time experience that will be hard to beat.

This was a beautiful get-away. We relaxed and enjoyed the views most of the time. The ventures into the towns provided everything we could want. From very quaint to modern the places were a delight.

Loved the Potato House!

  • 5 of 5

We loved this home, it is exactly what we hoped for and more!! Perfect location, far enough out of town, but not too far. The house was clean and cozy! The view off the deck, spectacular! We particularly enjoyed the jacuzzi which was perfectly maintained, and I’m not a public pool/jacuzzi type person:) Our late October vacation in NC was perfect!
