Overview

About the property

2 Bedrooms + 2 Baths (Sleeps 4)

Built upon the original 'Potato House', this luxurious cottage has beautiful wood beams and bark construction. Boulders surround this unique place, with a private hot tub hidden away from the road, but not from the view! Situated just outside Banner Elk and a neighboring vineyard, this oasis sits amidst a 43 acre farm that has been preserved through a conservation easement. From the front porch, there is a tremendous pastoral view with Grandfather Mountain in the distance. This view is so striking it has been used in commercial calendars. The cottage overlooks a tranquil farm scene with a beautiful barn and pond across the road. Private trails climb behind the cottage to the back side of Beech Mountain, while a unique walk through the Rhododendron thicket below the pasture lies in front of you. (No Smoking, No Pets, No Parties and NO children)

About John Schisler

I'm John Schisler, the owner of Potato House. This property belonged to my Aunt and Uncle who were avid environmentalists. I fell in love with its beauty in college, and helped them establish an easement on the property so the peaceful feeling and incredible view would never be spoiled. I share this 'potato house' with you so I can maintain this special place and protect it from development! I also like the local winery and restaurants!

John Schisler purchased this cottage in 2005

Why John Schisler chose High Country & Blue Ridge Mountains

This area has a wonderful balance of incredible hiking and excellent entertainment.

Lovely place to be!

  • 4 of 5

Very nice for 2 couples, though the common areas are a tad smallish. Very well equipped... we didn't want for anything. Tastefully decorated, and in excellent condition.... things looked new, clean, and well cared for and everything worked well. Very much enjoyed the front deck.... saw fireworks 2 nights from the deck between July 2nd & 4th. Beautiful view, very private, saw lots of wildlife, and my husband caught a large bass in the fishing pond..... he released it, so someone else can catch it again! Very relaxing 4 days! Highly recommend!

I made one mistake when I booked the Potato House...😍

  • 5 of 5

I made one mistake when I booked the Potato House... I should have booked it for TWICE as long! My husband and I were not ready to leave! This property is a jewel! The location, view, decor, cleanliness, linens, surrounding barns, pond, trail, wildlife, architectural details...EVERYTHING about the Potato House is just right!

The house is beautiful and views are great. One of the best places I've stayed in the area. We would definitely want to stay here on future visits.

The Potato House is a wonderful surprise.

  • 5 of 5

The house is well appointed, comfortable and cozy. Two king master suites worked well for our foursome. The grounds were wonderful for exploring around the old barns, across the road down by the pond but most especially the trails behind the house. We saw deer early in the morning and again in the evening. Great location for day trips out.

Most amazing place on earth.

  • 5 of 5

We go twice a year, a week in December and a week in May. The house and grounds are amazing. The house has wonderful views, very comfortable beds, heated bathroom floors, cozy fireplace room, and full kitchen. We sleep, read, drink wine in the hot tub, walk up the mountain daily, and go out for dinner except for the night we grill steaks and order pizza from Bella's. The owner's are amazing. The place is always immaculate and they are constantly surprising us with things like an outdoor fireplace. It is our favorite place in the world.
