Barbadon, built in 1930, was originally a 4 bedroom cottage and was remodeled into a year round home with 2 bedrooms in the 80’s. There is a large deck that overlooks the Lake . This rental does have TV and Wi-Fi. Linens and towels are included. Master bedroom has a new queen size bed, upstairs has 2 twin beds. There is also a twin out in the sunroom, great place to nap.
Kitchen is fully equipped including spices, sugar, flour and oil.
The Lake during the winter months can be breath taking, watch the ice shelf build and then be destroyed by the waves. You can cross country ski, snow shoe, sit and read a book by the fire. Please do not walk up onto the ice shelf, if you would fall in or break the shelf it would be almost impossible to crawl back out.
In the summer months the main attraction here is beautiful Lake Michigan and the beach. Without a doubt, the sand is some of the finest in the world. On top of that, the beach is private. There is a fire ring on the beach for evening bonfires. The Lake, while generally cool until July, has a sandy bottom that gradually becomes deeper. Beach furniture and a few beach toys and games are provided. If the salmon are running, it’s possible to catch dinner while wading in the Lake. For most though, it’s a cup of coffee watching the sun rise, the warm sand on toes while reading a book, building sand castles, throwing the football, and relaxing. The Lake can change quickly from smooth as glass to huge waves with a strong undercurrent; children need to be supervised at all times for their safety.
Our property is for family vacations. If you want to plan a large gathering for a day please contact Kohler Andréa State Park. They have great facilities for large groups. Their phone number is 920-451-4080.
There is a grocery store, ice cream and coffee shop, hardware store,Bakery, post office and two restaurants in Oostburg, two miles directly west. Sheboygan has many delicious restaurants plus shopping. Plenty of golf courses are available for every ability level.
Lake Michigan is high this year so there is not as much beach for walking as there has been. This is a cycle of the Lake. Currently there is a shorter beach in front of Barbadon.
This property has been in our family for 81 years. We are the third generation to be given the opportunity and honor to care for this beautiful property.
Nicola Davis purchased this house in 1930
Gramma(Bessie) camped on this very beach with 4 girl friends from Milwaukee in the 1920's . She fell in love with the Lake and the rest is history.
Oostburg is a darling town, it has the best Hardware Store and Bakery you will ever find. An easy drive from Chicago and without the crowds of Door County. Our beaches are private, the water clear with a sand bottom.
There are plenty of other local attractions if you decide to venture from the Beach however most people that come to Bessie's Beach tend to just say put and relax.
Nicola is wonderful to rent from. The experience couldn't have been better! Will definitely be coming back. Love the history of this place and the gorgeous views of Lake Michigan right outside the door. Fully stocked kitchen made cooking so easy, very unusual for a rental cabin. We enjoyed the fireplace and just relaxing in the space. Kohler is an easy drive for lunch and a fun afternoon.
The perfect place to escape. Starting with very precise directions on how to get there along with where to enter and park. Nicola then put our last name on the door on a piece of painted wood. I knew I was in the right place. Went through the door and came face to face to a stunning view of the lake. This was a place I had been looking for to bring my elderly mother for her birthday. Unfortunately she passed in December so we came as a family to reflect on our loss but celebrate the granddaughters birthday who shared our mothers birthday for 19 years. The lake could be easily heard when the windows were opened. Lawn chairs close to the lake to relax in, along with plenty of beach to walk and explore. Enjoyed the fireplace along with the pre-cut wood. Kitchen was well stocked with most pots, pans and dishes needed for our getaway. If you forget something for cooking Oostburg is a short drive away.....on a rainy day found the resale store on Main Street... Nicola was onsite for a few days and able to tell us some of the history of her wonderful place as well as some of the surrounding homes. There is nothing but good happening when you stay here.....plan on making this a family tradition as well as celebrating my 60th year here next year. Nicola thank you and your brothers for opening up your piece of paradise.
Most of the rooms have beautiful (and close) water views. The lake went from grey to platinum to silver to blue in the span of two days. There were hummingbirds, woodpeckers, cardinals and robins at the feeders on the deck. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen was efficient. Gorgeous spot on a beautiful lake! I look forward to my next visit.
Totally a hidden gem! Barbadon was the ideal spot for a weekend getaway. Romantic as well as family-friendly, it was perfect for our family of three, and we can't wait to come back to rent all 3 cottages for our extended family for a longer stay. Nicola went above and beyond to make our vacation relaxing and stress-free. She was quick to respond to our inquiries, and made the booking, check-in and check-out processes simple and straightforward. Barbadon is minutes from I 43 and yet totally secluded by the woods along the lakeshore. Conveniently located: short and easy drives to Oostburg, Sheboygan and Kohler Village. So it's easy to get to, and easy to get around and do some sightseeing. We especially enjoyed visiting the state park and the Maywood environmental park. Easy trails to hike with a toddler. However, the property itself boasts enough to occupy a toddler in sunshine or rain -- and we had both on our visit. The beach and its views are stunning. Sparkling in the sunshine - we had fantastic meals on the deck, enjoyed sitting out on the private beach and watching the waves, and the few passersby we encountered were super friendly. At night, Nicola helped us start a bonfire which was the perfect ending to a perfect day at the beach. In the rain and fog, Barbadon was still beautiful and so romantic. It was an ideal retreat to relax, decompress, and appreciate nature: we loved watching the hummingbirds at the feeder, spotting gulls diving for fish on the lake, and my toddler son delighted in all the chipmunks and squirrels scurrying across the deck and into the trees. The cottage is rustic in aesthetic but comfortably appointed: comfy cozy seating and beds, heat/cool works great, wifi is fast, phone avail if the mobile signal is spotty, solid water pressure, a well-stocked kitchen for food prep, dishwasher, microwave, laundry -- and has more than enough toys, games, and classic family movies to entertain little ones. We brought our own toys -- but didn't even need to unpack them. Everything was clean and the tools were there for us to keep the place clean as well: we especially appreciated that there was even a dustbuster on the wall so we could clean up after our toddler's meals. Nicola's attention to hospitable detail was remarkable: guest soaps, fresh flowers throughout, help with the bonfire, charcoal for the grill, inquiring as to whether we needed a highchair and other babyproofing! Thank you Nicola!
The booking experience was a breeze. Nicola was immediately responsive to the initial inquiry and the transaction couldn't have been easier.
The location is a stones throw from I 43 and very easy to find.
My first impression was WOW !!!! The first impression was not deceiving....it is an outstanding property !!!! The ambiance is of a modernized summer home of the 1930's, but I have never stayed in such a finely constructed and appointed lake home.
The house was lacking nothing. Bath and a half, every kitchen utensil ever needed, lots of warm water for the whirlpool bath, killer deck, spotlessly clean , crisp clean sheets, very comfortable bed, a ton of pillows and towels, central air ( didn't need it), WIFI , TV, ( had to check the weather), grill, fire pit, and privacy....
In spite of all that, the real attraction is the Million dollar view !!!! There are large picture windows facing Lake Michigan. Fantastic !!!
The pictures don't really do justice to how close the house is to the water . Neither do they really bring out the character of the house.
The beach was well kept, clean, and with comfortable chairs and an umbrella. The other property renters were not close enough to be an intrusion.
Only caveat is the cell phone coverage is spotty ...sometimes 4G , sometimes, no service. But what the heck , I didn't care...I was on vacation !! Text message worked. If you cant live without your cell you can hook up to the WIFI and that problem was solved. Also, they have a land line, so no obstacle to must make phone calls.
In summary Barbadon was a 5 star property that I intend to re visit....
Barbadon was an absolutely perfect, magical getaway. The beauty of the Lake, the quiet of a barren beach and the wonderful home with lakeviews from every room made this the most wonderful retreat. I stayed for 4 days and got the kind of deep rest and relaxation it usually takes 2 weeks to get! Nikki is the most generous and gracious host that ever lived and she thought of all the details to make this home a complete piece of heaven. Thank you so much for sharing your paradise! ....Madison, WI
