La Bamba Guesthouse is a charming guesthouse located in San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico. Situated in the garden of one of the loveliest houses in this colonial city, the private cottage offers guests a quiet stay, just a few blocks from the center.
The Guesthouse gives onto a beautiful garden. Its rooftop terrace offers stunning views of the city and surrounding mountains as well. An outdoor fireplace adds warmth to a covered seating area in the corridor.
Offering the intimacy of a bed and breakfast, and the privacy and remove of ones own home, La Bamba Guesthouse is the discerning traveler's delight. Our guests may join the owner for breakfast and benefit from her knowledge of the area, while having the solace and tranquility of their own quarters, quite apart, when desired. The Guesthouse at La Bamba is a little gem. The architecture and furnishings reflect those of the main house. Warm and inviting, the owner's sense of style tips its hat to Mexico without going overboard.
The living room, with its fireplace surrounded by bookcases, Spanish style chairs, and daybed, is a cozy place to read, write, entertain, or take a short siesta. The bedroom, with fireplace and window looking onto garden, offers our guests comfort at the end of a long day of discovering the delights of San Cristobal, or climbing the spectacular Mayan ruins or Palenque, Chincultic, Tenampuente, and Tonina. A tiled bath and shower leads off the bedroom. The sunny, fully equipped kitchen (with small dining area) is located down a short hall from the living room. Guests have access to a service terrace and private entrance from street.
The staff at La Bamba Guesthouse includes housekeeper, cook, and gardener. Breakfast and housekeeping are included. The owner is proud to employ a fine cook, and offers lunch at 2:00 P.M. at an extra charge, for those who reserve one day in advance.
Truly one of a kind in San Cristobal, this guesthouse is a must for travelers who appreciate accommodations where beautiful surroundings match comfort and convenience---a perfect place to experience the magic of San Cristobal.
"La Bamba Guesthouse (Calle Ejercito Nacional 46, tel. 967/678-7455, U.S. tel. 864/278-0508, www.labambaguesthouse.com, US$150 s/d) has just one unit, but it’s certainly among San Cristóbal’s finest lodgings, and a terrific deal to boot. This cozy one-bedroom home has a full-size kitchen, comfy living room with fireplace, and tasteful colonial-style decor, with a private entrance and wireless Internet. The coup de grace is the garden—a long, gorgeous plot of trees and lush flowering plants that connects the guesthouse to the home of La Bamba’s friendly and discreet American owner.
Two covered garden patios—one with an outdoor fireplace, and both exclusive to the guesthouse—are perfect for morning coffee and an evening glass of wine, while a large rooftop terrace has panoramic views of the city and surrounding mountains. A full breakfast is included; low season and weekly rates are also available."
This must be hands down the most comfortable and exclusive guest house rental in San Cristobal. I stayed for two weeks with the purpose of studying Spanish at Tierras Mayas language school. It was quiet, secluded, an easy 20 minute walk to downtown and my school, and most luxurious. The accomodations are only a little more than the cost of a hotel room, but you get an entire house, room to wander in the garden, and breakfast cooked to order! It is really best for 1 or 2 persons, as there is just one bedroom and bathroom. There was garage space to park my little rental car off the street. A private and secure entrance permits access to the home, which was a true oasis to return home to each afternoon. There is daily housekeeping service, wifi internet access, fresh flowers placed everywhere, a cook to prepare breakfast (included) and also to prepare a full and delicious daily afternoon meal if desired with 24 hours notice, and a gardner on premises daily to keep the gardens immaculate. I prepared many of my meals in my own comfortable kitchen and ate at home while studying. The rooms are immaculate, the bedding plush, the fireplaces warm and renewed every morning with fresh firewood, the sitting area and desk for study very adequate, the gardens were joyful and the sundeck terrace hosted incredible city view of the thunderstorms rolling in each afternoon. I am already planning a return visit and I would not think to stay anywhere else. Truly breathtaking on first sight, and a sanctuary to return to every day. First class accomodations, service, location and ambience. I can't imagine staying at any hotel in this town ever again when you can get all this included and feel like you are "at home".
I travel extensively around the world and in the Spanish Colonial city of San Cristobal, found a tranquil oasis in La Bamba, where I stayed with my husband in January. The casita was beautifully decorated, private and spacious, with a large bedroom, living room and eat-in kitchen. The rooftop terrace afforded a beautiful view of the city and neighboring mountains and was a great place to relax, read, doze in the sun.
Breakfast with owner Wickie was a delicious way to start the day, and along with the huevos Mexicano we received wonderful food for thought as to what area attractions to explore. Served in the main house on either on the patio, in the dining room or on the rooftop terrace, the meal afforded an opportunity to see the artful interior decor of Wickie's home--including a centuries-old mural on the wall uncovered during the rennovations.
Within a short walk are majestic churches and fabulous shopping on a pedestrian street lined with galleries, handicraft shops, and cafes. With an interest in indigenous cultures, we made numerous excursions to neighboring Mayan villages, where we had the privilege of getting acquainted with the traditions and spiritual practices of these lovely people. We also appreciated the magnifient scenery with mountaintop drives and on a boat trip through the spectacular Sumidero Canyon and on a day trip toward Guatemala to visit the Mayan ruin of Tenam Puente.
I have traveled and rented throughout Mexico and this is hand's down the best property I ever had the pleasure of staying at. For 2 peaceful enchanting weeks I luxuriated in the comfort of the La Bamba Guesthouse. The staff were kind, gentle, and quiet. The food was fresh & delicious & filling. The water in the casita is drinkable straight out of the tap! For once I didn't come down with a case of Montezuma's Revenge.
I had my own private entrance and came and went as I pleased. The location is superb. Far enough away from the center to have the best local flavor, but close enough to walk everywhere. The evenings and mornings were so lovely with the fog curling around the mountains and the sky lit up with a pink/purple/apricot glow.
There is good food within a block - I especially enjoyed the Italian place down the street where they made fresh pasta. Tiny with only a few tables run by an Italian man from Naples & his wife - I went 3 times during my 2 weeks!
When I return to San Cristobal I will never stay anywhere else. The vibe is so perfect at La Bamba. In addition to everything I've described, the bed was heavenly and I slept soundly each night. The rooftop patio is also lovely. And the garden...sigh. REally special.
I can't leave out Wickie the sweet owner...I enjoyed breakfast with her most mornings. She was gracious and informative without being one bit intrusive or overly chatty.
I loved coming home each day to this private oasis hidden behind an old wall. It felt ultra safe and very peaceful.
I am a solo senior traveler and I found this to be the perfect place to stay, enabling me to pretend I had my own little house in this colonial city. This is an upscale and romantic accommodation, and the price reflects this. The casita is in the middle of a lovely garden, and in a location that is in walking distance to most of the sights. The staff are lovely, and breakfast is cooked to order by a terrific cook. A few practical considerations...if the owner is not in, you are alone in the property after the staff leaves at 2p...this did not bother me at all, I liked the privacy, but if you don't this may not be the place for you. It was very safe, with a police annex right across the street. Overall, I was so pleased to stay in this special place.
San Cristobal is a fascinating colonial town with interesting churches, markets and good little restaurants - a perfect jumping off spot for exploring the surrounding countryside. It was great to experience the real Mexico away from the tourist beach ‘scene’. The casita is situated at the end of a charming walled garden where they served us the most delicious breakfast. We enjoyed out ten day stay immensely
We stayed at this gorgeous guesthouse for 4 days and the quality of the accommodations is superlative! We had a delightful time. The casita has a beautiful bedroom, bathroom, living room with fireplace, fully equipped kitchen and opens onto a lovely garden that you will never want to leave. It is wonderfully serene and well appointed. The cooking by Francesca is superior to anything you will find in the local restaurants. And the host is absolutely charming and will make sure your stay is everything you expected. Highly highly recommended.
La Bamba Guesthouse is just a few blocks from the center of the beautiful colonial city of San Cristobal. Park, Cathedral, Churches, Museums, and Indigenous Market, are all within walking distance.
La Bamba Guesthouse is located within driving distance of several Mayan ruins (Tenampuente, Chincultic, Tonina, and Palenque), the Sumidero Canyon, Lagos de Montebello, and many indigenous villages (San Juan Chamula, Zinicantan, Amatenango, among others).
