We own the boutique shop , Now & Zen in St. John and every year we go to Asia and buy directly from the artists that make it. We also feature local artists. We are located next to Shipwreck Restaurant.
Emily Bratton purchased this villa in 1999
We have traveled all over the world and chose St.John as our place to live. We have lived here 25 years.
We have an 8 island view of the British Virgin Islands and are adjacent to a wild bird sanctuary and hiking trails and a white sand beach within walking distance.
First, I want to say how wonderful the island of St.John is for a relaxing vacation. Now the only way to improve on this was to find a place as special as St.John and we did! Buddha
Garden is decorated in exotic Asian decor that was purchased by the owners on their many trips abroad. It is better than the pictures and at the end of the road so it is very private. There are two large bedrooms with attached bathrooms with walk-in showers, a great kitchen with a koi pond outside, a living room area, many neat dining areas and places to read including the roof deck. Good for yoga too. The views are something truly special. You look out on several of the British Virgin Islands, the east end of St.John and a beautiful bay below where you can hear the waves. There is always a great breeze too. We rented a jeep to travel to the numerous beaches and could not believe all the sea life we saw. No jet skiing so very relaxing. The owners Lolita and Ric were extremely helpful and answered any questions we had. We wish we had had a chance to talk to them about all their travels. Lolita provided us with a list of less known places to snorkel, their favorite places to eat and where to grocery shop. There is a market a few miles away (Lily's Gourmet Market) that had all we needed, we did shop once in town (Starfish) too. When we ate out the food was wonderful (Shipwreck, Skinny Legs...) and the servings were large so we made two meals from most places. Before coming we read about it being expensive to buy food and eat out but when you consider there is no sales tax or resort tax it worked out about the same as other island trips we have made. I saw on another review were some people stayed with out a jeep and you could do that but for us it was much easier to have transportation. My husband went into town twice to go out scuba diving (Low Key- which he said was the best group he has ever dove with) and we could go places when ever we wanted. We spent a great day on the "Baddy Kitty" that took us to several BVI (you need your passport) to swim, eat and have a drink. It could not have been a better trip. Like islands in the Caribbean in St.John you should be conscious about saving water and there is a water collection system at this home. I wish I could upload some of my pictures to better show Buddha Garden and it's views. We are hopeful to return again to say at this beautiful home.
Buddha Garden is clean, well maintained, and the owners are responsive and immediately available. The views are spectacular. The layout invites discovery, contemplation and wonder. Buddhas abound, amid musical instruments, gongs, bells, wind chimes, statues and art pieces too numerable to mention, collected by the owners on their travels. The place itself is a work of art, a sanctuary and a delight.
The Buddha Garden was more than we ever expected. Believe it or not, this home is more beautiful in person. Arriving to the sound of music and the tranquil scenery was perfect after a long day of traveling. Ric and Lolita have created a fascinating and cozy home on the side of a mountain overlooking John Folley's Bay. Every morning we woke up to the sun and got ready for an adventure, always looking forward to coming back to the Buddha Garden to relax. Snorkeling gear, beach chairs, coolers etc were all available for use. AC in the bedroom at night was greatly appreciated as well. The artwork and artifacts (like a museum!!) was astonishing. This place is amazing yall!
I can't wait to go back to St. John and I hope we stay at the Buddha Garden again!!!
My husband and I visited St. John for the 10th time this April. We wanted to stay somewhere unusual that provided privacy, relaxation and was close to the spots we enjoy most - which are almost exclusively on the Coral Bay side of the island. We really hit the jack pot! The Buddha Garden was easy to drive up to but we felt like we were in another country every time we entered the swinging doors..... which were imported from Africa or somewhere exotic! Everything in the house is some cultural art piece from another land. We could have stayed there another month and not had enough time to consider all the beauty in and around the house - to use all the little spaces. Yet, the villa is not a stuffy, pretentious place. It is eternally playful, with pathways, hidden meditation nooks and porches - all with epic views.
In the ten years we've been to the island - this is the first time we've decided that we will go back to the same house.
Thank you Buddha Garden!
My husband and I were here for our much delayed honeymoon that was for our 1st anniversary. The villa left us speechless. Upon arrival, there was relaxing music playing, and views of the East End, the British Virgin Islands and the Caribbean sea and Atlantic Ocean.
As we both live and work in NYC, we wanted to be away from all of the action and Coral Bay and this villa allowed that. In the mornings, all we heard was the ocean and birds chirping. We were awakened by great sunrises and light coming through the skylights. The hummingbirds, bananaquits and thrushes were all around. At night, we were greeted with the sounds of croaking geckos and views of a million stars from the roof.
The decor was amazing, it's clear a lot of thought and a labor of love was put into this house. Every time we turned around we discovered something new. Staying here was nothing short of magical, and my husband keeps saying how it will be really hard to top this trip to St. John. Ric and Lolita made the stay that much more welcome, and were both very friendly and helpful.
Close to Buddha Garden is the Tourist Trap (literally at the end of the road, a 2 min walk) which has really good and decently priced grub. On the other side is Cafe Concordia, which has beautiful sunset views and a small grocery store. We found Calabash Market supplied most of what we needed not far down 107 and Shipwreck Restaurant not much further down was excellent. Salt Pond Bay is within walking distance, just prepare for a hike on some steep hills, but well worth the walk.
If you really want to have a vacation where you really just get away from it all, and has all the romance you need, then you really need to book Buddha Garden.
Coral Bay has great shopping and restaurants. You can rent kayaks and go over the Hurricane Hole. Go snorkeling on 3 great beaches. You are close to several of the best hiking trails on the island. It is the most laid back and peaceful areas of St.John but also has live music and great nightlife.
Other Activities: Boating, shelling, wildlife viewing, rock climbing, horseshoes, shopping, kayaking, mini golf, parasailing, biking, health/beauty spa
