|Minimum Stay||2 nights|
Our beach house is located directly across the road from Punalu'u Beach Park. Watch sunrise with a cup of Hawaiian-grown coffee; walk along the sandy beach or take a swim to start your day. From the front area of the house you look out at gorgeous views of the beach and reef beyond. The beachfront is protected by the outer reef; so the waves are never big along the shore, there are long stretches of white sand in both directions. Two double kayaks, snorkel gear and other beach equipment are at the house for your use. The reef is approximately 1/2 mile out providing a very large safe area for exploring. If the BIG surf is of interest to you, you will find it just north (20 minutes)- mostly in the winter months.
The single-family home was built in the 1940's- she shines with her history as well as updates. The bedroom has a queen size bed and there are two large daybeds in the front section of the house. All the furniture was chosen with style as well as RELAXATION in mind. The kitchen and dining area is well equipped, but if you don't feel like cooking there are a few restaurants nearby. Just down the road is Ching's Family Store with homemade local snacks, basic groceries, and a lunch wagon serving shrimp. The house has two bathrooms; the second one on the back porch is perfect for a warm shower when you come in from the beach. The backyard is lush with a goldfish pond, stream and the gardens are planted with unusual tropical plants and flowers. The back porch is a great spot to unwind, grill some dinner and plan your next day's activities.
We, the owners, live on our flower farm near Chinaman's Hat- so you will have arrangements of fresh tropical flowers in your rental. Also wanting to 'show off' some other Hawaiian grown products; you will find an array of locally grown fruits, coffee, sugar and even North Shore grown chocolate to greet you on arrival.
The house is on the windward side of Oahu so the Koolau Mountains surround you and there are hiking trails and many beautiful beaches to discover. Punalu'u is a small beach town, not a well known tourist spot, a special peaceful spot close enough to activities and tourist attractions. Kualoa Ranch is 15 minutes away offering a variety of fun activities and Polynesian Cultural Center is 15 minutes the other direction. We look forward to welcoming you to the beach house, 'E komo mai'!

My husband and I live 15 minutes towards Kaneohe from the Punalu'u House. I recently retired from the University of Hawaii, as a research biologist. My husband is a retired director of a marine laboratory and is now raising and selling numerous varieties of exotic goldfish. Our oldest son graduated last June from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a degree in Architecture and our youngest son is at University of Oregon in Human Physiology. Our sons and I paddle 6-person outrigger canoes for Lanikai Canoe Club and also compete on OC-1 canoes. This is a photo of us jumping off the BIG rock at Waimea Bay - try it if you are brave!!
Kathleen McGovern-Hopkins purchased this house in 1987
I bought the house 30 years ago as a residence. I have always loved the beach and Punalu'u, with Kahana Bay just down the road is one of the most beautiful areas on Oahu. Our family grew as well as our desire to be farmers so we moved to Hakipu'u which is 2.5 acres on the water.
Nice backyard to putter about.
Cozy house with lots of comfortable furniture.
Thank you Kathy for a wonderful stay at the Punalu'u Guest House. We appreciate the toys you left for our son as well as the fresh fruit and flowers. We greatly enjoyed our stay on Oahu and felt quite at home here. Our son had fun exploring the backyard and was very excited by the fish and birds. The beach house has everything we need for a comfortable cozy stay. We hope to make it back here again soon.

Our party of four loved staying at Blue Ginger. First of all Kathy, the owner, was very helpful in addressing all my questions prior to and after our stay. She really does an outstanding job providing all you may need for your stay. We were welcomed by a lovely bowl of fruit (the apple bananas were delish!) and a basket with coffee, tea, chocolates, etc.) The house was clean and kitchen was fully stocked – even included zip lock bags, paper towels, OFF bug spray, and some seasonings. The flower arrangements were gorgeous. The décor was charming and beds comfortable. We did have an occasional gecko that crawled on the walls, and a frog seemed to be sitting at the back door waiting to be invited in, but that just added to the charm of staying in a tropical home. There were plenty of bath and beach towels. She even provided laundry soap to wash our clothes. We enjoyed the BBQ one evening (included all the nec. tools).
We left the windows open the entire time to allow the trade winds to flow through the house and it was wonderful. At night we did hear the traffic on the highway, but the sound of the waves crashing was so soothing it lullabied us to sleep. In the morning we could watch the sunrise from the windows in the front living room, but every morning I walked across the street sat on a picnic bench, or a rock on the beach to watch the sunrise. There are lots of crab holes and in the morning and when the sun came up, they would run out to the ocean!
The beach gear was helpful to have, especially the rolling cooler, and beach mats. We took one of the Kayaks out across the street. We went snorkeling at Turtle Bay (nice calm waters), the rip currents at Sharks Cove were strong but we got to see a dolphin jumping around, and a beached Monk Seal – she swam right passed us to get back into the ocean.
We ate at Uncle Bobo’s, a tiny little BBQ place up the road that was recommended by the owner and it was so good! We also ate at the Shrimp Truck which was a 3 minute walk to Ching’s Store (but I preferred the Shrimp Scampi plate we had a Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck which was about a 20 minute drive along the Hwy). North Shore Tacos was good and open late.
The home and the area was quiet, relaxing and beautiful. I would definitely stay again and recommend it to those who are not expecting that high-end resort vacation lifestyle but rather a nice quiet, relaxing tropical home away from home.
I am appreciative of the careful attention paid to ensuring everything one could wish for was provided on this lovely property. Comfortable beds and beautiful linens, fluffy (and plentiful) towels; a well appointed kitchen stocked with gorgeous pottery, quality pots and pans and utensils; craftsman furniture (inside and out); and the best art and art objects ever.
Our family of four felt absolutely comfortable here and welcomed by the owner. The view is commanding and the location perfect to access the local sights. There is plenty to see and do. Too many to list but the highlights include the Polynesian Cultural Centre, watching the surfers (whoa ), visiting Haleiwa, the secret (not so secret) beach across from the excellent fruit stand etc.
Okay, there are some things to be aware of and accept when you book (yes I would book again!!!) - there are teeny tiny ants. Well, this is the country and one must expect critters and bugs. There is spray but we found that by keeping the kitchen tidy and food tucked away that the ants were not a big deal. Yes, there is a highway between that lovely view and the beach.....it can be noisy but don't let that hinder your decision. Our school age children slept on the day beds in the front and were NEVER disturbed. We heard the occasional big truck but after a big day of surf, sun, hikes and good food we sunk into the beds and slept well.
Finally, our son was stung by a jelly fish BUT it was 9 days after a full moon (google full moon and jelly fish) and it was quite windy that day. I spoke with some locals who said if the wind is noticeable pay attention. No matter - our boy was back in the water the next day. I add this last note not to deter you but to be frank about our experience.
Staying at Kathy's Blue Ginger beach house was the perfect staycation for my birthday this year. The house featured a ton of amenities, but what really struck me was the natural beauty, light, and great location.
I would definitely stay here again and would recommend to tourists from away or local residents like myself who need a break from the bustle of Honolulu.
Great place and Kathy is a friendly and helpful host who clearly tries to be as accommodating as possible. Pros: Across street from secluded beach; on eastern side of Oahu and thus away from bigger crowds in Honolulu and on west side; close (under 2 miles) to relatively uncrowded terrific swimming beach at Kahana bay; easy access by car to cool stuff on north end of island; house itself is cute and includes great backyard space. Cons: On busy road (though this is hard to avoid since there's only one main road); a bit of a drive to get groceries other than very simple stuff at the walkable convenience store; beach across street is beautiful but rocky (great if you have water shoes). We stayed at 3 VRBOs on our recent Hawaii trip and we four (incl. two teenage daughters) all agree that Blue Ginger was our favorite.
What a wonderful getaway! We had a similar experience to one of the other guests whereas our original trip was delayed due to 2 hurricanes passing over the Hawaiian Islands last August. Kathy was quick to offer us a full refund and the best of luck with whatever our alternative honeymoon plans ended up to be. Luckily, earlier this month, we were able to take the missed trip and rebook with Kathy. The house was quaint and charming and full of comfort items. Plenty of linens and towels and fun gear for picnicking, the beach or any other outdoor getaway we choose. The kitchen was fully equipped for making meals of any size which we made good use of along with the spotless grill out on the patio. We felt welcomed and comfortable as soon as we arrived by the basket of fresh fruit, beautiful flower arrangements and the fixings for the best cup of coffee we have ever had. Though its true the traffic can be heard the beautiful ocean view and tropical landscaped yard seems to help that aspect seem like a small issue. The Shrimp Shack and Keneke's are both in walking distance and have excellent food! They both offer very unique dining experiences and if you have a car North Shore Taco's is worth the 10 minute drive north. If we are ever blessed enough to get back to Oahu we will be looking to book with Kathy & Blue Ginger!
