Boothbay Estate Rental Photos and Description

5 bedrooms, 5 full, private baths, sleeps 11 in beds

Come away from it all....catch your breath.

Six miles from the bustle of Boothbay Harbor is a peaceful waterfront retreat, set among rolling fields, meandering stone walls and richly colored perennial gardens........imagine a place that evokes your fondest memories....and brings your vacation dreams to bold colorful life....

The estate consists of four New England-style buildings: Farmhouse and historic, 200 year-old Homer Jones barn; a charming garden shed; a renovated 1800s Cape and the Gallery Barn.

The Farmhouse combines new convenience with historical flavor, with exterior porches and dormers, and a new deck with fabulous river views, all surrounded by gardens.

Inside, the first floor holds a large, fully-equipped kitchen, dining area and Great Room, built and furnished with 200 year-old barn-boards and timbers. These rooms face the river, the sunsets and the pond. A cozy media room with current technology and a handicap-accessible King bedroom and bath face the courtyard. On the second floor are four additional bedrooms with private baths; two facing the courtyard, two facing the river, and a Gathering Room above the Great Room.

Wake to birdsong in the apple trees and early morning fog on the Back River....then make yourself delicious coffee and a hearty, healthy breakfast in the fully-equipped kitchen in the elegant Farmhouse.

Wander 15 acres of gardens and woodland trails....borrow a sit-on-top kayak or an inflatable boat to paddle with local seals....enjoy games, ride bikes, meet our friendly bald eagles and other the Maine painted turtles or listen to frogs on the freshwater pond......wander the park-like grounds.....take a cool dip or a sail on the river....

Refreshed, venture out into the Boothbay region to join a tour boat to see whales or puffins, or to go lobstering, shop, view our many art galleries, try some local restaurants and generally have a memorable visit. The Coastal Maine Botanical Garden is only 4 miles away! So is the world-class Boothbay Harbor Country Club golf course! Or try hiking at any of the 13 preserves within 10 miles of this home.

At the end of the day, imagine coming ‘home’ to a snack and drink on the front or new back deck....a good book in the hammock.....a sunset through the windows....and a long, delicious sleep in one of your five lovely bedrooms with private bath, colorful bedding, paddle fans, cable TV, WiFli.

Renewed again, live your bold and colorful life! Both buildings (the charming historic Cape and the elegant Farmhouse) are available year-round.

When the buildings are not rented to Homeaway guests, they are offered in the B&B either case, it's the perfect destination for a personal retreat, family or school reunion, wedding or other gathering event. See more by googling Bold Colorful Life Estate and Retreat Center.

About Melissa Thornton, Owner

I’ve been saving for my ‘dream house’ for 40 years....and I fell in love with kayaking about 12 years ago. After a five year search through waterfront properties in CT, the Adirondacks, MA, NH and finally ME, this was the property that offered the combination of things I'd been seeking. And it was perfect for building vacation rentals so that the awesome environment could be shared.

The setting is idyllic...with fields, woods, many perennial gardens, apple trees, lilac trees and old stone walls wandering down to the Back River. There are 15 acres of land, facing west for sunsets, on the protected waterfront of Maine and with a big freshwater pond and woodlands. The whole estate sits atop Maine ledge, which is sculpted to fall gently towards the water.

It's in an area where I am able, in the 'off-season', to offer weekend and week-long retreats that combine personal growth, spirituality and 'back to nature' events, including hiking, paddling and exploring the nearby Botanical Gardens. And I want to share this beauty with as many people who love Nature and the wild, wonderful aspects of Maine as vacation rentals are the perfect answer.

Melissa Thornton, Owner purchased this estate in 2006

Why Melissa Thornton, Owner chose Boothbay Harbor Area

Mother Nature has shaped this property to be both elegant and beautiful...the buildings are on the plateau at the top of the estate and the lawns and gardens, stone walls and woodlands slope gently down and down to the Back River. A great Blue Heron often visits the freshwater pond; then flies off towards the river. Our local pair of bald eagles are seen wheeling overhead regularly as the tides change. A huge porcupine was seen at the south end of the property recently and we have visits from foxes and deer, ospreys and hawks.

The property has a healing energy which most people feel the moment they step onto it. A visit here fills the vision with color, the spirits with hope and the body with calm and peace.

What makes this estate unique

The Boothbay peninsula offers the perfect getaway. The area is naturally breath-taking, with forests and fields, farms and gardens, brash rocky coastline and gentle coves and lakes.

Boothbay Harbor is a charming town with lots of engaging activities and it’s just six miles down the road. This is the area to go shopping, visit galleries and craft fairs, sample local fare at great restaurants, enjoy deep water activities like whale watching and lobster-boating.

And there are natural bonuses: 13 nature preserves for hiking within 10 miles---5 within 5 miles---one within 1/2 mile; a world-class Botanical Garden within 4 miles; kayaking possibilities in rivers and lakes and the Atlantic. We also have a world-class golf course 4 miles away.

The Rockland/Camden area and Freeport shopping are within an hour's drive in either direction; and my favorite Maine park, Acadia National Park is just under three hours away. Nova Scotia and Prince Edward island, both favorite parts of Canada, are nearby too…

The Bold Colorful Life Estate is also a Retreat Center, so plan to join us for a Retreat for personal growth, renewal and spiritual centering...The Bold Colorful Life Gallery offers colorful elegant jewelry, stunning natural photographs, and dramatic works of art in oil and pastel to our rental guests...when it's open.

Owner's Response: Dear Jen and all, It was a complete honor to be chosen as the site for your momentous event. Your parents are the epitome of a loving and committed couple and they have obviously raised children in the most delightful way. Watching all of you plan, execute and enjoy the 50th anniversary events was awesome. Every one of you (and even family members who weren't able to join you for the actual occastion) were kind, friendly, funny and so committed to the other family members. It was truly inspiring. Thank you so much for your kind words and I hope the visit to Boothbay and to this property becomes an annual event. The Bold Colorful Life Estate (and I) will welcome you with open arms. Warmest of wishes, Melissa

Beautiful house in a secluded setting. Melissa was very friendly and accessible if we needed her, but invisible otherwise. The property was well maintained, welcoming, and clean. The town of Boothbay Harbor was close by with plenty to do and eat. I would recommend this property to others.

Do come back and visit us again soon! Warm smiles, Melissa

The Farmhouse is Fabulous

  • 5 of 5

We had 3 couples and a fifth wheel (me) at the Farmhouse and the place was fabulous. Bedrooms and bathrooms for each, with one to spare. All designed in bright and bold colors and two with river views. The kitchen and dining area were perfect for a big group, for cooking and eating and entertaining. Plenty of room to spread out and find personal space, both in the Farmhouse and on the property itself. I was initially concerned that it might be a little removed from Boothbay Village, but found that the drive wasn't too far, and some of the guests biked to the Village and beyond.

It was truly a special place and our hostess, Melissa, was thorough in offering advice and recommendations about the area(even before our visit) and and invisible for most of our time there, unless we had specific questions. At which point she was available and extremely helpful and knowledgeable. I would highly recommend the Farmhouse for the facility and its amenities, as well as for the reasonable price and the gracious hostess.

Owner's Response: Dear Tom, Your group was a particular highlight this summer. The kind of long-term friendship that brings college undergraduate classmates back together 30 + years later is amazing. And you were clearly the hub of this high energy, high humor and hilarity, highly interactive group. It was fun to run into you, as a full group or sub-groups, as you took off for the next adventure...or returned home for an evening of camaraderie. Every time I saw you I was left with a big grin on my face. Thanks for the laughter...the happy energy...and the open friendship you brought to the Bold Colorful Life estate. Do come back...again and again! Still smiling, Melissa

Wonderful and relaxing stay

  • 5 of 5

Melissa was incredibly welcoming. She took the time to get us settled and give us a tour of the grounds. We had a wonderful time at her place and were blown away by the beauty of both the grounds and the house itself. The bedrooms were well-appointed and the kitchen and dining area were perfect for a large group.

Owner's Response: Bruce, you were an amazing mastermind of this delightful group. You were an excellent communicator before we met; very friendly and responsive during your group's stay; and the group left the home in very good condition. THANKS! Overall, it was a pure delight to have you was lovely to see your enthusiasm and love for one another, to catch bits of your interactions that were filled with laughter and to watch you all enjoy the home, the estate and the environs. I do hope that you return again and again! And I'll be looking forward to hearing far off strains of lovely piano music and coloratura soprano singing!!

Beautiful property!

  • 5 of 5

This is a great place for a group of 10. Each room had its own bath which is always appreciated. There is a large kitchen/dining area for everyone to gather, and a library room for quiet book reading. We enjoyed the fire pit (bring a flashlight) one evening for s'mores. The owner has put a lot of work into landscaping and creating a lovely path to get you safely down to the water. We didn't get to kayak, but this would have been a nice, calm place to do so especially if you're not an expert at kayaking. I personally liked the quietness of the home away from the town. Our room was cozy and quiet, as well.

As far as the "rules" some have complained about, I would much prefer the book Melissa provides with the rules to having to call her every 5 minutes with questions. She has worked hard on this home and wants to keep it nice for the next travelers.

The only downside for me was having to wash the linens. If you're in a hurry to leave on departure day you'll want to keep this in mind or arrange to pay the extra to have it done. Not a big deal, but just be prepared.

Owner's Response: This was a delightful group of 10 guests traveling together from Kansas and visiting the Boothbay area after spending time in Bar Harbor. They were full of fun...each couple had set up a secret outing for part of the visit and the others just enjoyed whatever the plans were. They enjoyed the sunshine and creatively worked their plans around the early June rains. All in all, it was great to have them here...they were bright spirits...friendly visitors...appreciative guests...who took wonderful care of the house. We hope to see you again some time soon! Warmest wishes, Melissa

Memorable Memorial Day Weekend

  • 5 of 5

WOW!!! Our group has been getting together yearly on Memorial Day Weekend since our children were small and we used to go tent camping together - that's about twenty-four years ago. Our kids are all grown and gone but we still like to get together for the holiday weekend. Since we are all getting a bit older we prefer a bit more comfort than a sleeping bag on the ground in a tent, dry pit toilets and no showers. In the past few years we have picked a location and then find a home to rent together. This home was the best we have stayed at yet!!! The home is lovely, spacious, clean and in a lovely setting. The host Melissa T. could not have been more accommodating to our needs while we were there. We even forgot a pair of boots and didn't realize until we got home. She graciously packed them up and sent them back to us! My favorite piece of furniture in the home is the huge barn door dining room table! Great for gathering around for meals or games! My favorite room to relax in was the great room with a beautiful view, a wall of books and a baby grand piano. If you are in the Boothbay Harbor area for a vacation or extended stay this is the place you want to be.

Owner's Response: WOW is right. What a fabulous group! We're open year round, but Memorial Day is really the kickoff for the 'high season' in Maine. And I could not have wished for a more wonderful group to kick off the season. This group arrived at different moments, from all over New England, but they immediately meshed...sharing positive energy, laughter, and lots of fun together. They balanced their enjoyment of the Boothbay area well between being on site--gathering in the Farmhouse or on the river-view deck and wandering the lawns and gardens--and exploring the activities, Gardens and restaurants in the area. They even had an 'astronomy night', as one couple brought their two HUGE, handmade telescopes and the group wandered nearby galaxies. Yes, WOW. It was a pure delight to meet these guests and I do so hope they return again and again. Warmest, Melissa
