Overview

About the property

4 Bedrooms, 3 Baths, Sleeps 4-8

Next to a mountain stream, this house is handcrafted and well situated for exploring the pristine nature of Point Reyes National Seashore all around you, nearby Tomales Bay cove beaches, Pacific side oceanic beaches, whale watching, wild flowers, mountain biking, sailing and kayaking. This is one of the iconic, true Inverness homes, only a 5 minute stroll through First Valley to town shops, oysters at Salt Water restaurant and Tomales Bay.

Or going feral, you can cross the footbridge near the house, hike up the mesa where you'll find myriad trails climbing Mount Vision to kettle ponds and sweeping views of the headlands. The house is also perfect for cozy dinners, games, movies, reading and relaxing with loved ones.

This is a great place for a family, at the end of a short lane, safe from road traffic. There is a toy room, shared tennis courts, an open outdoor dining space for picnics under a live oak.

Owner prefers to be paid by paper checks. This saves on fees and can be sent along with usual contract. (A small quiet dog is okay, but no unruly or loud dogs allowed.)

Why Margaret chose Inverness

We marvel at Point Reyes and the choices of fun fresh things to do in this boundless and well-protected natural preserve.

What makes this house unique

Heart's Desire hikes, Bodega Bay for a tour of Hitchcock's set for The Birds and crab salad in town, oysters at Hog Island, dinner in Point Reyes, the local farmer's market on Saturdays, walking Kehoe Beach for big tumbling waves, reading the paper at Drakes, blackberry picking in September...the list goes on and on!

Spacious and charming house in fantastic location!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a fantastic family weekend in Inverness. I love the wooden interior, large windows, layout of the house and all the space (two living rooms, large bar/counter in the kitchen). We enjoyed cooking dinner with the wood burning stove keeping us warm. The beds were very comfortable and the kitchen was well equipped. Margaret was very responsive to all questions I had and recommended some wonderful dog-friendly outings. We picked up picnic supplies from Cowgirl Creamery and spent a great day on Kehoe beach. I love the quiet neighborhood and proximity to Tomales Bay and Pt. Reyes Station. We are would love to rent this house again - a perfect getaway for a city family!

Highly recommended

  • 5 of 5

This is the perfect place for a family vacation. The kitchen is spacious with 6 stools around a breakfast/bar counter, 8 seats around the dining room table, cast iron skillets and pots & pans...we cooked every meal during our stay.

The many bedrooms made living arrangements a cinch. The master bedroom has French windows that open up to a quiet balcony the size of a small living room shaded by a native oak with moss hanging from its branches. There are 4 bunk beds for little cousins to room together and catch up. Comfy sofas for talking late into the night are in the living room in the main house and in the attached wing. We roomed very comfortably.

We were surrounded by plenty of greenery. The fragrance of the trees make you feel you are at your aromatherapist. It smells like eucalyptus but I'm guessing it's laurel since we are on Laurel Lane. Jasmine and rose vines welcome you near the main entrance, a hammock tied to two redwoods invites you to relax, a rope swings from the right arm of a coast live oak, a backyard orchard with pears, apples, and mandarin oranges is hydrated by the running creek. You know how they used to sell CDs of sounds of the forest or the trickling of water? Well, this is that bubbling brook. You can see the neighbor's houses but you don't hear them, only the sound of water slaking the redwoods' thirst.

There is Wifi for the workaholics who want to stay in and tap on their keyboards while the rest of the family swim in the bay. We went up to Dillon beach where dogs can get their exercise unleashed but it was a bit misty and cold that day. It was sunny back in Point Reyes Station after passing through the oysters farms and restaurants, and the kids enjoyed the calm waters of Chicken Ranch beach on the other side.

Since it's a large house with so many beds, guests are asked to remake the beds. Gas is shut off in the summer, but you don't need the neater. If you're looking for something negative in this review to make it real, I really couldn't tell you. It was the best place for us, and even the adults who normally don't look forward to overnighting with relatives and kids, could relax and enjoy their stay. Everybody had a good time.

Sweet, cozy home

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in this home. Lots of places to sleep and also relax on comfortable couches under big windows looking out to the greenery of Invermess. Lots of wooden character and a nice outside table, hammock, and grass under a beautiful big tree with the sounds of the creek nearby. We had a lot of fun cooking after a day of hiking. Thanks so much for the stay!

Spacious and cozy at the same time

  • 5 of 5

For a family of introverts this house was a dream come true. So many places to get alone-time (the lovely garden hammock, outdoor dining table, garden chairs, delightful bedrooms), as well as two beautiful sitting rooms and a well appointed kitchen for being together and cooking. A friendly neighbor pointed out an osprey nest nearby, a passing deer engaged in a staring contest (and won, easily), squirrels squabbled on the roof, and the smell of bay laurels surrounded us.

Margaret was extremely helpful and a pleasure to interact with, and the house was in a perfect central location to explore the whole of the Point Reyes area.

Paying by paper checks saves both guests and hosts more service fees, so we much prefer that mode. We send you the usual contract to mail back with checks, very simple and avoids extra costs :)
Please let me know your dates/guest number/adults & kids. This is a rare, original Inverness house, but not a party locale.
One small and quiet dog would be considered, but not barkers :)
