The compound itself is made up of seven units, four of them 40’s cottages and two of those are now offered as vacation rentals. The owners, Allan, a Canadian film-maker and Chiyoko, a Japanese writer live on the site and have created a way of living they are happy to share.
Each unit overlooks a small private sitting garden and larger common gardens are nearby. Various tables and fire pits invite intimate or expansive al fresco dining. A Balinese daybed is for chilling or outdoor sleeping.
The compound was recently on the famous Venice House & Garden Tour and the local newspaper called it ‘most enticing’. Various areas were also used as locations for several films.
$3200/month, $840/week. $130/night (minimum 5 days) 50% payable upon booking, 50% upon arrival, $60 one time cleaning fee. $40/night per extra adult after 3 adults and over 17 years old.
Fully furnished for elegant living, the kitchen is fully equipped with an espresso machine, filtered water, etc. A queen sized bed, linens and towels are provided, free do-it-yourself laundry, free internet and cable, free loan of bikes, free fully enclosed parking for one car, vaulted ceiling, hardwood floor and DVD and book library. Friendly and arty neighbors. Friendly animals are welcomed and can safely run free in the compound
The property is in the center of Venice’s semi-secret Oakwood area which has the highest number of artists per capita outside of NYC's Soho area. It is a neighborhood where locals have pride of place and greet each other as they walk, skate and bike around.
What else? Venice Love is a certain relaxed funkiness, it’s ten kinds of fruit trees, nine chimes, six kinds of bamboo, six fountains, two portable Weber BBQs and a little white hen who lays tasty eggs. It’s pretty authentically Venice Beach so it may not be for everybody but perfect for the right person.

We live on the compound and our day-to-day life has become blended with cottage life. Basically our whole plan is to live life fully and beautifully. Add to that Chiyoko's fervent wish to make our tenants and guests as comfortable as humanly possible.
Allan Moyle or Chiyoko Tanaka purchased this cottage in 2002
Venice Beach has the best air in LA since it is within the coastal fog cover. It never gets unbearably hot even in summer. It also has a real sense of neighborhood. It has attracted creative people from all over the world as evidenced by the number of galleries and the popular 'art-crawl' every month.
The compound is securely and completely fenced in. Visitors and residents feel they have entered another world when they come home. The 2010 Venice Garden Tour called it 'a little piece of paradise'.
Allan and Chiyoko are wonderful hosts and very accommodating. We got in later than expected and they were perfectly fine with that. The cottage was well appointed and the compound is secluded and very relaxing. You feel immune to the hustle and bustle of a very busy Venice. Location is great, just a few blocks from the beach. We have family in the area and will stay here again. Thank you Allan and Chiyoko!
My sister and I loved staying here! The hosts were amazing, the other tenants were friendly, and the location was perfect. We arrived to a lovely bottle of wine and, after Allen determined we were "vodka girls," he was nice enough to hook us up with his own personal bottle so we didn't have to venture out after traveling. I invited several friends over the second night and Allen lit us a fire that we enjoyed all night. I would absolutely return and hope to bring more guests next time (and perhaps rent a second cottage!).
Even though it rained for the two days that we were there, we really enjoyed our stay.
The cottage was as expected, very well organized, clean, and the owners, Allan and his wife were very nice. Highly recomended!
At the time around New Year's Day we spent a week at Cosy Cottage and had a most pleasant vacation experience. We'd love to visit again!
Allan and Chiyoko are wonderful hosts, kind and mindful and they do everything to make you feel welcome.
The cottage is super nice. All is set up with great care for detail to make you feel at home when traveling - not only do Allan and Chiyoko provide a good selection of appliances - but there is also a wonderful collection of books and DVDs to enjoy on a rainy night. The same kind of charm that is at work inside the cottage is echoed in the luscious, green outdoor spaces with areas for communal use - three little dogs are on guard duty to keep you safe :) - all very lovely and we hope to come back during a warmer season to fully enjoy the outdoor sitting areas! If Europe were closer, we would visit every year.
All thumbs up for Cosy Cottage! It is a lovely space to relax and recharge, a very good place to unwind and explore, and a great location to start day trips to the ocean or the city of Los Angeles alike. The cottage is in a fairly quiet area and if you don't leave the cottage you could almost forget that you are visiting one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world.
We really enjoyed the cottage in Venice. Allan & Chiyoko were great hosts. The place was cosy, as advertised, clean and had everything we needed. It was great to be close to so many of our favorite things and take in the local culture. It was also nice to have our own designated parking spot, although we only took the car out once during our 4 day stay. Thanks Allan & Chiyoko for sharing your home with us!
Local attractions are Gold’s flagship gym, Google's new headquarters. Dozens of yoga and Pilates studios are within stretching distance. Don’t miss what’s left of the canals which gave Venice its name. Find a brand new skateboarding park next to the original Muscle Beach. Some say the biggest local attraction is the beach others say it’s the swarming bikini boardwalk next to it. Both are five blocks away. Our neighborhood, Oakwood, is anchored by Abbot Kinney Boulevard (named after the turn of the century visionary who built Venice as a summer get-away from Los Angeles.) This strip was recently called ‘the hippest street in America’ by GQ. The ‘next big thing’ is nearby Rose Avenue where healthy food and wine are on the agenda.
Neighborhoods to the north are trendy Santa Monica, laid-back Malibu and rustic Topanga. To the east is Lincoln Boulevard with ‘the sexiest Whole Foods on planet earth” sez the LA Times. Also a plethora of pot shops and tattoo emporiums. To the south are Marina Del Ray for sailing and Culver City for galleries. The Santa Monica Freeway takes you downtown in 25 minutes and the Pacific Coast Highway can drop you at the airport in 15 minutes.
