Overview

About the property

House, 5 Bedrooms + Den, 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 18-20)

This is a beautiful island get away within 20-25 minutes from Charleston.

Quietly nested in the marsh this home sits on just over 2.2 acres and is rustic with many modern touches. You have unobstructed expansive marsh/river views and unbelievable sunsets. The dock and floating dock provide access to the Leadenwah River and on out to the ocean.

Bring your boat, kayak, canoe, sailboat and any other water equipment you wish. If it is no more than 19 feet you can keep at the dock and time the tides to come in and out. You would need to put in at Cherry Point Marina and come around, it is a longer and windy boat ride. If you have a john boat for fishing, kayak/canoe or jet ski come in and out all day long. Fish away and crab until your heart desires. You can bring a Bocci Ball game, Badminton set, Croquet, or horseshoes are all fun to play in the yard!

We have plenty of blue crabs to feed the family. Jump in off the dock and swim the river.. We love to!

Enjoy the saline pool only a few years old. We have a tree house for the youngsters, adult supervision please. Tree swings by the river edge, walk down the dirt road, or just kick back on the screened in porch under the ceiling fan for a puzzle.

Note: The house is "Camp" and country, shabby shic, it is a little rough around the edges, old paint splatters on floor, uneven paint and mismatch furniture. The country brings more dirt and bugs if you are desire turn down service and a perfect house this is not the house for you. It is comfortable and folks love that they can be comfortable there.

If the nights are cool you can have a fire in the large fire place.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We took full advantage of the dock by crabbing, shrimping and kayaking daily. On one of our kayak trips we observed dolphins strand feeding, then we became the observed, the dolphins came right up to my kayak and took a good close look. It was probably the highlight of my trip. Everyone in our party had been suffering from job burn out prior to their stay and wound up leaving refreshed. It's a great spot and convenient if you want to runaround and comfortable if you want to stay in.

Thank you again for a lovely get away.

A retreat for all ages

  • 5 of 5

What a great place this was .we came in with 8 adults and 4 kids and 2 small dogs .accomodations are rustic comfortable a perfect place for a big family .we brought our kayaks and my favorite time was paddeling at sunrise were as the younger crowd slept in .they went for some great paddeling at sunset .the pool was a life saver with the kids even after a few hours on the beach they would go straight in the pool again while adults relaxed on the porch or pool deck.we had one huge crab dinner with the crabs we got of the dock, augmented with the sea trouts we caught .the view ,location this was truly lowcountry at its best .

Owner keeling was great to work with ,best stocked kitchen I have encountered in a rental house yet .It was everything and more as promised

I could go on and on about the great time we had here .

Owner's Response: Anne thank you very much for your kind words. I am so happy you enjoyed yourself and had a good time on vacation. I love how you called it rustic comfortable and that is exactly what it is, a place to hang and be comfortable. You were a delight to have I hope you revisit us again.

Summer family reunion.

  • 4 of 5

13 family members from 4 states met here for a week. It is a wonderful location and all enjoyed being there. Sitting on the screen porch, getting in the pool and walking out on the dock were the favorite activities. We visited several beaches and Charleston. The age ranges of the family were 20 months to 66 years. Plenty for all to enjoy.

Love the hospitality of the area, good food, history. Need to come back to see more!

House was comfortable for our crew. Owner was very attentive to any details that we needed addressed. It was peaceful and relaxing- away from the hustle of the downtown area / beaches. If that is what you are looking for - this is the place.

We enjoyed the pool and the doc and the house was plenty big enough

  • 4 of 5

The house could have been cleaned a little better. The kitchen was well stocked but it needs a toaster. The air conditioner up stairs worked great but the one down stairs I think needs a little TLC. The house was old but nice. Plenty of beds for my family of 14. Loved the big yard our kids had a ball and the zip line was a lot of fun. The dock was mine and my husband favorite even though we didn't caught many fish it was fun catching the few small flounders, stingray, and mullet. I'm glad we wanted to catch crabs while we were there cause there were more crabs then we knew what to do with lol. We kept about 30 and ate real good one night they were delicious. We had a lot of fun in the pool it was nice to be able to swim when u wanted too and not have a time that the pool closed for once. I suggest if you go make sure u have water from the store to drink and cook with cause the water there has a funny smell at first and makes stuff taste bad when u cook with it. Also watch out for the ant beds in the yard they will tear u up need a little ant killer.

Owner's Response: Thanks again Erica for staying. I wanted to clarify we use the toaster oven as a toaster we do not have a pop up. You just told me about the AC downstairs being a little sluggish a little while ago just after leaving and I already have someone going out to check it, it is not an old unit it might be a little low on freon. We have never experienced the water making food taste any differently but do provide the 5 gallon water cooler for drinking as the water is well and can have a slightly saline taste. Thanks for the suggestion on the ants. They pop up overnight. We try to keep them at bay but it can be next to impossible. Thank you

Wonderful place for a family vacation

  • 4 of 5

Stayed here the week of the 4th through the 11th of July. The house and yard is as described. Large yard, nicely furnished and comfortable house. Well stocked kitchen. Our family ranged in age from 7 to 60. Brought our 2 Goldens with us as well. Plenty of room for all. Whether you wanted to be together or find a quiet spot to chill, it was available. The crabbing was outstanding. We placed the crab pot in the river when we arrived. By Tuesday evening we had about 20 for dinner. Then by Thursday evening we had another 30. Didn't have to work hard for the pleasure at all. The saline pool was a welcome relief. Had a small issue with it not being cleaned upon our arrival. That was rectified. Also found some minor issues in the house. Please, if you rent this place, or any other for that matter, let the owners know. So they can have it fixed before the next guests arrive. Keelin was a pleasure to deal with. Very easy to reach via e-mail. The surrounding area landmarks are within easy driving distance. Everything within 20-30 minutes. Would definitely consider Wadmalaw for another stay.

Great escape for the winter

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I, along with our 8 year old, 92 pound, female lab rented “Locust Grove” for the months of February and March. It was an escape from the harsh winter weather we were experiencing in upstate New York. We chose this property mainly because they would accept large dogs and of course, the river and we weren’t disappointed. We have a somewhat different opinion from most of the other renters who I believe were there for a short period of time. With that said, there’s not much more I can add to the description of the property itself that hasn’t already been addressed. The house was certainly large enough for the two of us along with several bouts of visiting family and friends. We spent most of the time in the kitchen and living room areas, looking out over the back of the property, through the double doors, watching the tide come and go from the river. My husband would take a folding chair onto the porch through the French doors of the master bedroom to catch the sun while I would take my coffee and walk out to the marsh and sit along the river to watch the wildlife greet the morning. This is a place for nature lovers for sure. The egrets, herons, ducks, pelicans, cormorants were plentiful and I even was witness to a bald eagle several times and a lone dolphin that came cursing by at low tide. The song birds were abundant everywhere and we loved waking up each morning to the baying of Vince, the donkey next door. Keeling was a great owner/manager and responded quickly to any of our needs, questions and problems that we had. We happen to be college basketball fans and with March Madness coming soon were disappointed that we were unable to get most of the games. Keelin promptly called Direct TV and up-graded to the sports package. Very nice indeed. The internet worked with no problems. Wadmalaw is truly a wonderful island with friendly, warm people, lots of animals, produce farms and a great place to spend our winter. The winery, not far away, had an oyster roast a few days after we came to the area. We got to taste some great wines and spirits along with the oysters and got a feel for the area every early on. We loved the Terrace Theater not far down the road and made weekly trips into Charleston. Traffic was not too bad at this time of year and were able to get almost everywhere with-in 20-30 minutes or so. Our dog, Miss Maxine, loved the beach at Kiawah, we loved the galleries, restaurants and access to wonderful fresh seafood.
