Life at Milfiori is restful and unhurried. The house is spacious and artfully decorated with many period pieces. It is like stepping back in time from the moment you cross the threshold. Each bedroom is completely unique and melds beautifully with the period of the home. One bedroom has a vintage claw foot tub en-suite.
There is a charming caretaker's cottage on the property and a beautiful old barn. Adjacent to the main house is a stone building with heavy metal doors. In decades past this building served as the bank as well as the village store. You can still see the well that served the community of Douglas Flat.
The house is in the heart of Calaveras County's wine growing region. Stop in at any of the wineries to meet the owners and learn about the local wines. You will be pleasantly surprised.
For a more active day, explore the old mining towns and visit one of the numerous museums for the local lore. Go antiquing or spend the day hiking in nearby Big Trees State Park or skiing at Bear Valley.
Or just enjoy the grounds at Milfiori. Sit on the porch and read a book or stroll through the gardens and try to identify the variety of flowers and plants (the name means a thousand flowers). Take the time to enjoy the slower pace of life in the Gold Country.
The owner is on the premises, available to answer your questions or give suggestions on how to make the most of your trip to the Mother Lode.
I retired to the Mother Lode from an active and stressful career in the Bay Area.
Willi Krauss purchased this house in 2003
I fell in love with Murphys and knew I had found something special when I first saw Milfiori. I love the historical buildings on the property and the beautiful garden. It is magical.
I do antique and vintage sales out of the old "Italian Store" twice a year. You might be able to do some shopping right on the property. And I love to give a tour of the property.
This was our first time staying at Milfiori, it will definitely not be our last! The house slept six of comfortably. We cooked in the country kitchen, and loved the big dining table. Each bedroom has it's own bathroom, one with a shower. There is also a full bath downstairs with a huge walk in shower. I have friends staying in the house this coming weekend for a wedding. We all enjoyed our stay, as well as meeting Willi! Look forward to returning soon.
What am amazing getaway! My husband and I decided to bring along another couple to enjoy Murphys for a nice weekend. When we booked the Milfiori house we didn't realize we had been to the property before for a beautiful wedding of our dear friends about 4 years ago. However, we never got a chance to see the house and it was BEAUTIFUL: perfect country charm that felt right at home. Willi was kind and showed us around. She is nearby on the property for anything we needed, but everything you could need was available! We had a wonderful time wine tasting and we even cooked a couple meals in the cute kitchen. We hope to come back and stay at the Milfiori house again, we truly enjoyed our time there.
We fell in love with this charming place the minute we walked in the door. Milfiori is just perfect. Willi is a wonderful host and a pleasure to deal with. We will definitely be back for a longer stay when we can sit outside and enjoy the beautiful garden! Close enough to Murphy's yet just far enough away for some peace and quiet! Highly recommend.
Milfori is a great rustic setting in Douglas Flat, 1.5 miles from downtown Murphys. Went there with another couple and DD for the wine tasting event. The Milfiori setting and weather were so nice and peaceful that we spent both afternoons on the porch with most excellent mountain wines and cheese and crackers. Willi, the property owner, was pleasant but not around much, which was fine. We hiked the Murphys Fire break trail with the Murphys mayor (honorary), went to the AMA Boosters crab feed, and had breakfast with most generous family friends. The Murphys sushi restaurant was great for the price. Would definitely return in a heartbeat. All bedrooms are up steep stairs. Milfiori is rich in legitimate gold rush history.
Our post Christmas vacation with our two adult children and their spouses couldn't have been more perfect! Each of Milifiori's 3 beautiful bedrooms had a comfortable queen bed and a bathroom so everyone was happy. We were there during a cold snap but the house warmed up quickly with its separate thermostats for the upstairs bedrooms and the downstairs kitchen and common rooms. And there were 2 cozy freestanding gas fireplaces which added both warmth and ambience. The big wooden dining table was a perfect setting for meals and our evening board games. There is also a beautiful living room and a separate room with a TV and DVD player (check that it's working, you might want to bring one along if it is important to you)
During the days we had outings to Mercer Caverns, Railtown in Jamestown, and several days we visited a couple of tasting rooms. Something to entertain everyone! We didn't have chains otherwise we would have gone up the road to Bear Valley, or hiked at Big Trees.
The VRBO posted photos cannot capture the flow and spaciousness of Milifiori, with its many windows that look out onto its lovely gardens. Willi has an artistic eye and the decor throughout the house is very tasteful. We can't recommend Milifiori more highly! Since no children are allowed, we will not be able to come back as a family next year as we will have our first grandchild. However, we would definitely like to return with two other couples to enjoy Milifiori and Murphys in the spring. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us, Willi!
Our family of four (children 7 and 11) went to Murphys to experience California history and to enjoy the outdoors. Staying at Milfiori was memorable -- it helped us connect to the history of the area. The house is impeccable, spacious and comfortable and the grounds are amazingly tranquil. Details abound: The house and grounds have carefully chosen accessories everywhere (but in no sense is there clutter), a well-appointed kitchen, a swing in the garden, etc. Our children loved staying in a 19th century house (with all modern comforts) and exploring the grounds. The owner is both efficient and thoughtful. Booking/arrival/departure arrangements were incredibly easy. We were going to a theatre performance in the park, and she kindly retrieved four lawn chairs from her storage for our use. This was indeed a special trip for our family, and we will return!
