We are an empty nester couple in our 60s. Dick is a retired Realtor after 44 years. Veegie is the Branch Office Administrator for a stock brokerage firm in Charlottesville.
We have 4 children and 4 grandchildren, 2 Cairn Terrierists, 1 hound named Louise.
We moved to Batesville Rd in 1994.
Dick Bell purchased this cottage in 1996
We built Afton Cottage in 1996 as a rental unit. In October 2007 we decided to market it as a vacation home online through VRBO. Since that time, we have had over 350 reservations by wonderful folks, many of whom have returned multiple times.
The great appeal of Afton Cottage is its location. It is located in a beautiful area and it is convenient to Charlottesville, Monticello, Staunton, & Wintergreen.
Close proximity to the Shenandoah National Park, Appalachian Trail, 10+ wineries,5 breweries. distilleries, and cideries make it an ideal home-away-from-home for hikers, bikers, sightseers and wine and craft beer afficianados.
The privacy and tranquility afforded by the cottage make it a wonderful getaway for those seeking a place to merely relax and unwind. It is a favorite of writers.
We stayed at Afton Cottage from August 10-August 17th. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would have stayed longer, but needed to get back to Florida. Dick is a wonderful host and the home is charmingly appointed with little extras like new magazines, cook books, notepad on the fridge with a photo of Afton Cottage, etc. On arrival our Scottish Terrier gobbled up the gift of two dog biscuits tied in a ribbon and proceeded to make himself completely at home. It was a joy to see him roaming in the garden and sitting out on the deck in the early morning. From inside the cottage we viewed humming birds, and two deer.
The kitchen is well equipped and the home is very clean and comfy. The drive to the cottage is scenic (we stopped and took photos) and the roads are narrow but good. There is a short gravel driveway from the road to the cottage. Although in the country, you are near wineries, breweries and cideries and within easy driving distance to Charlottesville and Staunton. We visited Afton Mountain Winery, Blue Toad, Blue Mountain Brewery - all have outside seating areas with beautiful views and are dog friendly (seating outside). Afton Cottage is a quiet home from home and we had a family vacation we will fondly remember. We would not hesitate to return to Afton Cottage and this beautiful area of Virginia.
We Vacation in Virginia more times than not but this is definitely one of the nicer places , out in the country but not far away from the winery's, brew houses , blue ridge parkway or skyline drive. Very Clean and well equipped.
and Dick Bell let us bring our dog which was probably why we picked this cottage and we have no regrets.
This is the 6th time we've stayed at Afton Cottage. The location is perfectly situated for complete privacy yet just a few minutes off the Blue Ridge Parkway, Route 151, I-64, or US 29. The cottage has all of the comforts of home, including quality cookware and a grill. Dick is a fantastic host and is exceptionally responsive if you need him. The best thing about Afton Cottage though is that you are "forced" to drive through some of the most beautiful country in the world to get anywhere!
Bob, myself and our sheltie Sophie stayed at Afton Cottage in March. The cottage is relaxing, comfortable, private and homey. Has everything you would need or want plus more. A safe place for you and your pet to walk with lovely farms surrounding the property. So glad we stayed at Afton Cottage vs being in a name brand run of the mill hotel. Dick was very kind and helpful in regard to questions we asked about the area. Put Afton Cottage on your list of places to stay if you are in the area, you will have not regrets.
We've traveled to Charlottesville numerous times over the last 20 or years -- but have never seen it from the perspective of a private, mountain-top cabin. The surroundings are breath-taking. The road up to the cabin passes through some of the most beautiful scenery in the entire county. Century-old stone walls, behind which are some very, very impressive homes, with views of the mountains in the distance. The cabin itself occupies its own clearing in the midst of acres of woods. From the moment we arrived some of our (my dog and I) favorite times were spent hiking behind and around the cabin. The cottage itself is so comfortably decorated. A very nice living room, complete with comfy couch and easy chairs - along with a terrific selection of recent magazines and C'ville information on the coffee table. The kitchen has everything you'll need - along with a nice dining table. A choice of two bedrooms - one with a queen, the other with twins. Very hard to choose - as both have wonderful views, and the mattresses, pillows, and bed linens on all ensure a very peaceful night. The one thing that is so hard to describe is the total absence of noise. You could hear every rustle of wind -- what a way to drift off to sleep!!
During the day of check-in Dick kept in constant contact with us, and even worked to ensure the cabin was available for us earlier than usual. When we walked in we were greeted with a personalized note, welcoming us, as well as a ribbon-wrapped gift of two dog buscuits for our dog, Sam. On our last day Dick visited and - since no one was checking in until later in the day - wanted to ensure we knew we could take our time packing and leaving.
Speaking of which - it was very hard to leave. But we know we'll be back many, many times. What a find!
We stayed at Afton Cottage a week in early May 2016. It was a perfect house rental in an ideal location to enjoy the Blue Ridge Mts, Virginia wineries and breweries, and many historic sites. The cottage was immaculate, well stocked, and felt homey from the moment we walked in. We had a little trouble getting the TV to work and Dick, the owner, came over immediately when we called and worked it out. We had no reason to call him after that for the entire 7 days except to say goodbye and tell him what a great place it was. He provided everything - from two linen sets for all beds and more good quality towels than we could ever use. There was dish detergent, laundry detergent, garbage bags, coffee filters, paper towels…just everything you need! We rent houses frequently when we travel and often there is just enough of these supplies to get through a day but no more. Dick has a well stocked cottage that starts your vacation out right!
The Queen bed is one of the best, firm but with a medium soft top. We both have back issues and this bed was comfortable and supportive for us. The two twins were equally comfortable and both bedrooms were nice size and easy to move around in. The living room is well furnished with good quality furniture, a nice flat screen TV, many books and magazines….you feel like you are home in this cottage. There is a high ceiling in the main living area which provides a sense of spaciousness. The kitchen/dining room, open to the living room, was a nice size for us (2 couples) with a nice inventory of cooking and serving supplies. We cooked breakfasts and a few dinners. A full size refrigerator with ice maker had a completely full ice bin when we arrived. Unfortunately we had quite a bit of rain but we enjoyed the outside deck facing privately into the woods as much as we could. We saw our first Indigo Buntings on the deck!! Very exciting! Nicely placed spot lights give ample light outside at night too. We had our dog, Maisie, with us and the yard was more than sufficient for walks and playing. The bathroom had an easy to operate shower/tub with nice water pressure and plenty of hot water, all very clean.
We have never had anyone ask us after our stay if anything in the cottage needs up dated or improved….thank you for asking, Dick! We couldn’t suggest anything but it is clear that Dick is focused on making sure that all aspects of a renter’s experience are positive. We hope to return!
