3 Bedroom (Q,Q,D & T), Sleeps 6, 2 full Bathrooms, outdoor shower facing beach.
This Cottage is located on one of the most secluded sandy beaches in Good Hart, Michigan, 18 Miles North of Harbor Springs The house sits at the edge of the forest with a 160-degree view of lake Michigan. From our HUGE 50’ X 25’ sun filled deck with gas grill, table & chairs, you look out across 250’ of beach grass covered sand dunes to our wide sandy beach. With only a few other houses nearby, quiet and privacy surround you.
Like the deck, the main living/dining room and adjacent kitchen are dominated by the big view of sky water and beach. The living/dining areas have seating for 6. The covered back deck faces into a quiet forest. The master bed/bath room with big closet is on this main floor next to the kitchen. Overlooking the main room is a high-ceilinged sleeping loft with one double and one twin bed. The lower level has another bedroom with a queen bed, a bathroom, laundry, 2 closets and a garage for the storage of outdoor gear. Facing the beach next to the front deck is a spacious outdoor shower & hidden behind the first dune is a fire pit area to enjoy.
We have have constantly upgraded the house. Adding the outside deck (2012), outside shower stall (2015), new beds and furniture inside and out (2014-2016), 5 sets of new sliding doors on the main floor, a new big window and replacing all other windows in the lower level of the house which was also repainted (2017). These new windows in the lower level bedroom add both a water view and ventilation to the room.
Wireless phones, cable TV and wireless Internet allow you to connect with the world when and if you have to. But if you choose to disconnect from the world... the light, view and privacy will actually help you be away from it at all.
When you are here the water is right in front of you, down the gently sloped path 250 feet away. We do not have one of those rocky beaches like you find many places 'Up North' so walking around and swimming on our sandy beaches is always easy. The beach varies from year to year and month to month. As the lake level has risen 4 feet in the past 5 years the beach has changed. Out front we used to have a sandy point jutting out 600-700 feet with small trees and shrubs growing up and down the beach. Now we have a straight sandy beach and all the shrubs and trees are gone. The outcrop is hidden under the water but you can still find it and walk out several hundred feet before you get to 5 feet of water. You can walk up and down our beaches for miles if you choose. When you decide to sit and swim, pick a place you like, just respect other neighbors up and down the beach and try to enter the water near our cottage.
You can easily walk a Kayak or Paddle Board down to the beach. It is not possible to get Jet skis or any other kind of watercraft into the water over our property. You could neither drive them or drag them by hand to the waters edge. This is also not an area where you can anchor a boat in the water overnight.
In this Scenic Northern Michigan area you have easy access via M-119 and the famous 'Tunnel of Trees” to Bicycling, Golf, Fishing, Tennis, Kayaking, River Rafting and just about any other outdoor activity. There are several antique stores in the area. In the spring forests filled with the white Trillium flowers surround you. In the fall you are surrounded by the intense fall colors and the sounds of the lake.
The amenities of Harbor Springs and Petoskey with shopping, restaurants and cultural activities are only 20 to 45 minutes south of the house. Kayak and bicycle rentals are available here thru 'The Outfitters' in Harbor Springs.
Pond Hill Farm several miles south on 119 offers a wonderful local organic produce and specialty foods.
Your daily newspapers, coffee and sandwiches etc. can be found at the Good Hart General store 3 miles south along with several other small stores.
Cross Village 6 miles to the north has the famous Leggs Inn with Polish food, music and outrageous bar. Here also is the closest gas station and another larger general store and several other stores. 'Tree Pines Art Center' is the most impressive. This gallery has a large selection of local artists work on display and numerous workshops and classes, some for children.
Sturgeon Bay, a few miles north of Cross village offers more clear water to swim, sandy beaches and giant sand dunes to explore by foot. When the winds are blowing, Sturgeon Bay without a doubt is the best local spot for windsurfing and kite boarding. Just past Sturgeon Bay a nighttime Sky Park has opened.
Further north famous Mackinac Island is only 30 minutes from the house .
Eating out around here is the 'Douglas Lake Bar and Grill' east of Pellston and is worth the 30 minute ride. It is our favorite place for local fish dining. 'The Fish' on State rd. is half way to Harbor. ' Moosejaw' has the Pizza and Burgers. The 'Family Style Fried Chicken Dinner' at 'The Dam Site' allows you to experience an older style of dining and see the only MOD 60's High style Cocktail bar in Northern Michigan. It has to be seen to be believed.

About Eric Russell
I am from the East Coast and I married into an extended family from down state that has vacationed, owned property or lived in Good Hart for more then 100 years. Like them I have learned to love this area. The beaches, the water, the privacy are all unique in this area. We also love the style and feel of this A-Frame along with it's views and location. When we outgrew the house we could not bear to part with it so have kept it to share with others.
Eric Russell purchased this Cottage in 2003

Beautiful view of Lake Michigan!
We loved our stay and spent most of our time at the lakeshore and on the expansive deck! So lovely!! This was perfect for our family.
We love it when our guests "Get" what our house and this part of Northern Michigan is all about. We always appreciate their enjoyment of this quiet beautiful location.
Peaceful get away.
Loved our stay. This cottage is on a stretch of beach that makes you feel like no one else is around. It is as close to a private beach as you can get. Lots of sandy beach with plenty of rock hunting to be done. Depending on the tide you can walk about half a mile one way and three-quarters of a mile the other. Fabulous fire pit for evening talks and a large deck with grill for dinners watching the sun set. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen was very well equipped. Now note this cottage is remote. Google maps and Verizon did well but the internet can come and go and is not for streaming. Any downloading of pictures or videos will try your patients. We loved that aspect because we had the kids attention more! Working vacations may not be the right fit here. Also the road down to the cottage is steep and there are two hairpin turns. The first of which we could not negotiate with out a two point turn in our truck. So, when they say no trailers.... there is no way a trailer could get down there. It is beautiful, has a 60's feel to it, there are great lake breezes when you open the windows. I loved waking to the sounds of the surf. There is an outdoor shower for those of you who like to really get close to nature and if you are a runner or a biker there is the tunnel of trees road for a beautiful work out. Really want to get away from the hustle and bustle of it all.... This is your place.
Perfect Beach Getaway
We stayed for a week in August 2017 and loved the updated cottage. Between the time we booked and our stay, the owners added windows to the basement bedroom, providing a great ventilation and allowed us to sleep with the sound of the waves. The owners made the rental easy and were quick to answer any questions we had. This cottage is perfect for those who want to feel secluded on the beach - we hardly saw any people on the beach (just one neighbor) during the week we were there. We loved spending time on the beach, enjoying the firepit on still evenings, and lounging on the generous deck overlooking Lake Michigan. There were still plenty of activities within a 30-40 minute drive (Mackinaw City, Harbor Springs, Petoskey) that kept the family entertained, though I'll admit that felt long to drive for groceries (time your grocery run with lunch in Harbor Springs and you're fine). We couldn't get enough of the beach. It's primarily sand here, with some patches of rocks. Enough rocks, though, for us to find many Petoskey stones and other coral fossils. We've rented many places up and down the coast of Lake Michigan and this is my husband's favorite.
If you want an authentic Lake Michigan North Woods experience then this little gem is for you. Our family has been doing the annual week on Lake Michigan in Good Hart/ Cross Village for 28 years and the Russell Cottage is one of our favorite rentals. The view from the large lakefront deck is unparalleled in our experience, it allows the pleasure of taking in the beautiful Lake Michigan sunsets right outside the cottage door. The cottage's 1960's A-frame gives off a kick back beach vibe and the interior is suited to beach living; comfortable but practible, as it should be. A recent addition of an outdoor shower facing the lake is our favorite place to take a shower at the end of a long day of swimming and sunning. Our family has increased to 7 over the years and we find the size of this cottage to be perfect as there is a large deck for dining and conversing. If you are regular on Lake Michigan then you know the majority of vacation is spent outside. As far as a mold problem in this cottage; we have never found this to be an issue. I am extremely allergic to mold and react with vertigo and severe sinus infections within a day or two of being in a building with mold. I have NEVER had an issue or reaction to mold in the Russell Cottage. We've rented this same cottage for three summers in a row and look forward to renting it for many years to come!
Not as Expected at all!
If you or anyone in your party is allergic to mold DON’T RENT THIS PLACE! Four of our party of six adults is allergic to mold and we were miserable! So glad we were only there for a few days!
They must have had a professional photographer to photograph the house because it was nothing like the pictures! Much smaller!
From the beginning the communication was terrible. I heard nothing from the owner or his contact person until I contacted the owner. So frustrating. I did not get an email with instructions on how to get into the house until we were already on our way there!
The owner charged an extra $25.00 a day to clean it yet it had not been cleaned! The floors needed swept. We had to wipe off the table and the counter tops. The downstairs (basement) shower was disgusting and had to be cleaned. The shower curtain was all moldy so we bleached it and asked for another one and was told we would get one the very next day but we did not. A pillow cover had to be removed because it had blood on it.
On the positive the beach was nice and the deck was good although we had to wipe off the outside tables to use them and the deck needed swept.
Below is our response to a dissatisfied renter. It is important to note that our cottage has been very successfully rented and loved by many, many people throughout the past 10-11 years. We have never had any complaints until last summer.
Mold: We fully acknowledge that the basement does not have adequate ventilation and have a dehumidifier which needed to be emptied on a regular basis. There are no signs of “mold” that we are aware of. We had planned for several years to enhance the quality of the light and airflow in this basement room by adding windows that will provide a lovely view of the lake. This renovation will be completed in the spring.
Good Photos! Thank you for the compliment! The house is not a big house—it is a summer cottage. It is pristine. In fact, this house was designed in the 1960s by Wallace Mitchell, the former head of Cranbrook and famous architect. Every time we have considered adding to the A-Frame, we are stymied because we love and appreciate the scale and thoughtfulness of the lay-out. It is a quiet, peaceful cottage with an incredible view and beach. We added the deck to increase “living space” and were worried we may have compromised the balance of the building because it is so special.
Communication: There were definite communication break-downs with this specific renter that stemmed from email glitches (including our emails going to the renter’s spam). Again, we’ve successfully rented to many people through the years and this is the first time we had this complaint.
Cleaning fee: This renter had agreed to the additional fee because it was a “short rental” and costs extra for cleaning.
Cleaning: We have never had a complaint about the cleaning in the past. We apologize for this and will make sure that we triple check that all is in order!
Worst vacation experience my family has ever had. Besides the mold in the house, and the "beach" being inundated with six foot weeds, the owner ruined our wedding.
The owner refused to let us have a small wedding on the "beach". He verbally threatened us (have this on video, but this site doesn't support uploads), showed up unannounced twice to "check on things", and made the entire experience a vacation from hell.
Do your familly a favor, DO NOT RENT FROM THIS OWNER!
John W. inquired about renting our small cottage for his family around the time of his planned summer wedding. He explained that he was looking for a place for his family to stay and seeking locations to have the ceremony (i.e., a place for accommodations separate from the actual event). He talked about the beach and surroundings as a pristine location “for a wedding”. With the discussions, he was not forthright in that he planned to CONDUCT the wedding on the property at the start of the rental week. How do we know he never explicitly mentioned this?
As experienced home owners renting a small, beloved cottage without incident for many years, we have specifically told potential inquirers that no weddings or large parties are allowed at the A-Frame for several reasons. First, the cottage is on a very narrow dirt road that is carved into a steep cliff and is the access road for our neighbors north. There is parking for 3 cars maximum on the property. Even if there were intentions of parking on the bluff above us, we do not own this property and our neighbors are not amenable to parking on their land for parties below. Second, the septic system works well for a maximum of 6 people who are vacationing. It would never survive a large party. Next, our insurance does not cover parties and/or weddings on site. So, the reality is, if John W. had truly been forthcoming about his plans to use our place for his wedding, and discussed the logistics of parking, septic and insurance, we would have been very explicit about the reasons why this was not allowed and then this entire incident would not have happened.
The day of the “wedding” and his planned start of the rental agreement, we were at the house cleaning and shocked and incredulous when cars showed-up with the food and preparations for the festivities. We had no idea that a wedding was planned at our cottage with up to 45 people. It was incredibly stressful for all as one can imagine and we had to insist that he find another location as this simply could not happen at our house for the reasons above.
John W. never paid for his week at our cottage although his family stayed there that week.
Our A-Frame is located 18 miles north of Harbor Springs and 3 miles north of Good Hart off of M-119. The long driveway to the house is just south of Island View rd.
