This Cottage is located in Good Hart, Michigan, 18 Miles North of Harbor Springs on one of the most secluded waterfront beaches you will ever find. The house sits at the edge of the forest with a 160-degree view of lake Michigan. From our HUGE 50’X25’ sun filled deck with gas grill, table & chairs, you look out across 250’ of beach grass covered sand dunes to our wide sandy beach. The beach stretches for over a mile to the north and south of us. With only a few other houses on the road, quiet and privacy surround you.
The main living/dining room and adjacent kitchen are dominated by the same light and view as the front deck. The living/dining areas have seating for 6. The covered back deck faces into a quiet forest. The master bed/bath room with big closet is on this main floor next to the kitchen. Overlooking the main room is a high-ceilinged sleeping loft with a double and one twin bed. The lower level has another bedroom with a queen bed, a bathroom, laundry, 2 closets and a garage for the storage of outdoor gear. Facing the beach next to the front deck is a spacious outdoor shower & hidden behind the first dune is a fire pit area to enjoy. We have installed new phones, cable TV and wireless Internet allowing you to connect with the world when and if you have to. But if you choose to disconnect from the world... the light, view and privacy will actually help you be away from it at all.
In the spring 2012 we enlarged the front deck. This spring (2017) we will be getting some new Deck furniture for this outdoor living area. We are also planning on replacing all of the sliding doors on the first floor. We also are going to install windows facing the water in the lower level bedroom adding both light and ventilation.
When you are here the water is right there out front, down the path 250 feet away. The beach varies from year to year and month to month. Huge sand bars can form and disappear in a week. Hidden under the water out front is a wide outcrop of small stones. You can walk out this outcrop several hundred feet before you get to 5 feet of water. We do not have one of those large rocky beaches like you find many places 'Up North' so walking around and swimming is always easy. You can walk up and down our beaches go for miles if you choose. When you decide to sit and swim, pick a place you like, just respect other neighbors up and down the beach and try to stay near our area.
You can easily walk a Kayak or Paddle Board down to the beach. It is not possible to get Jet skis or any other kind of watercraft into the water over our property. You could neither drive them or drag them by hand to the waters edge. This is also not an area where you can anchor a boat in the water.
In this Scenic Northern Michigan area you have easy access via M-119 and the famous 'Tunnel of Trees” to Bicycling, Golf, Fishing, Tennis, Kayaking, River Rafting and just about any other outdoor activity. There are several antique stores in the area. In the spring forests filled with the white Trillium flowers surround you. In the fall you are surrounded by the intense fall colors and the sounds of the lake.
The amenities of Harbor Springs and Petoskey with shopping, restaurants and cultural activities are only 20 to 45 minutes south of the house. Kayak and bicycle rentals are available here thru 'The Outfitters' in Harbor Springs.
Pond Hill Farm several miles south on 119 offers a wonderful local organic produce and specialty foods.
Your daily newspapers, coffee and sandwiches etc. can be found at the Good Hart General store 3 miles south along with several other small stores.
Cross Village 6 miles to the north has the famous Leggs Inn with Polish food, music and outrageous bar. Here also is the closest gas station and another larger general store and several other stores. 'Tree Pines Art Center' is the most impressive. This gallery has a large selection of local artists work on display and numerous workshops and classes, some for children.
Sturgeon Bay, a few miles north of Cross village offers more clear water to swim, sandy beaches and giant sand dunes to explore by foot. When the winds are blowing, Sturgeon Bay without a doubt is the best local spot for windsurfing and kite boarding.
Further north is famous Mackinac Island only 30 minutes away.
Eating out around here is the 'Douglas Lake Bar and Grill' east of Pellston and is worth the 30 minute ride. It is our favorite place for local fish dining. 'The Fish' on State rd. is half way to Harbor. ' Moosejaw' has the Pizza and Burgers. The 'Family Style Fried Chicken Dinner' at 'The Dam Site' allows you to experience an older style of dining and see the only MOD 60's High style Cocktail bar in Northern Michigan. It has to be seen to be believed.

My wife and her family has vacationed, owned property or lived in Good Hart starting more then 100 years ago. I have enjoyed the area for the past 23 years. We have recently relocated from Massachusetts to Ann Arbor Michigan.
Eric Russell purchased this cottage in 2003
This cottage is a bright sun lit environment with a modern feel. 'Cabins' are great but this is an open light filled house in which you can experience the beach, the woods and Lake Michigan at it's fullest. Our Cottage is located on one of the most secluded sandy beaches in the area. Quiet and Privacy are assured here as there are so few neighbors on this stretch of beach.
Quiet, secluded, place to walk, swim, bike and RELAX.
This is our second visit to the A-frame within as many years. We again had an outstanding (peaceful/energizing/rejuvenating) time. The exterior upgrades to the A-frame are fantastic! The new deck is huge and awesome, affording even more expansive lake views. It doubles the size of the house on non-rainy days and, even from indoors, creates an allusion one is on a boat/ship. The railing is a beautifully designed post and rail support system with horizontal stainless steel safety cables that virtually disappear into the fantastic lake view. The new deck furniture and grill complete this outdoor room. We spent nearly all of our time at the cottage outdoors because of it. Can't wait to return.
If you want an authentic Lake Michigan North Woods experience then this little gem is for you. Our family has been doing the annual week on Lake Michigan in Good Hart/ Cross Village for 28 years and the Russell Cottage is one of our favorite rentals. The view from the large lakefront deck is unparalleled in our experience, it allows the pleasure of taking in the beautiful Lake Michigan sunsets right outside the cottage door. The cottage's 1960's A-frame gives off a kick back beach vibe and the interior is suited to beach living; comfortable but practible, as it should be. A recent addition of an outdoor shower facing the lake is our favorite place to take a shower at the end of a long day of swimming and sunning. Our family has increased to 7 over the years and we find the size of this cottage to be perfect as there is a large deck for dining and conversing. If you are regular on Lake Michigan then you know the majority of vacation is spent outside. As far as a mold problem in this cottage; we have never found this to be an issue. I am extremely allergic to mold and react with vertigo and severe sinus infections within a day or two of being in a building with mold. I have NEVER had an issue or reaction to mold in the Russell Cottage. We've rented this same cottage for three summers in a row and look forward to renting it for many years to come!
If you or anyone in your party is allergic to mold DON’T RENT THIS PLACE! Four of our party of six adults is allergic to mold and we were miserable! So glad we were only there for a few days!
They must have had a professional photographer to photograph the house because it was nothing like the pictures! Much smaller!
From the beginning the communication was terrible. I heard nothing from the owner or his contact person until I contacted the owner. So frustrating. I did not get an email with instructions on how to get into the house until we were already on our way there!
The owner charged an extra $25.00 a day to clean it yet it had not been cleaned! The floors needed swept. We had to wipe off the table and the counter tops. The downstairs (basement) shower was disgusting and had to be cleaned. The shower curtain was all moldy so we bleached it and asked for another one and was told we would get one the very next day but we did not. A pillow cover had to be removed because it had blood on it.
On the positive the beach was nice and the deck was good although we had to wipe off the outside tables to use them and the deck needed swept.
Worst vacation experience my family has ever had. Besides the mold in the house, and the "beach" being inundated with six foot weeds, the owner ruined our wedding.
The owner refused to let us have a small wedding on the "beach". He verbally threatened us (have this on video, but this site doesn't support uploads), showed up unannounced twice to "check on things", and made the entire experience a vacation from hell.
Do your familly a favor, DO NOT RENT FROM THIS OWNER!
Loved the deck and view, which can't be beat! The waterfront is remarkably shallow, which made for delightfully warm water, so unexpected after our brutal Michigan winter. Great fire pit area which also provided a place to sunbathe on windy days. The cottage is nice, but needed a little 'maintenance' here and there. Also, we were not able to access cell phone service (Verizon).
Our family of four had a fabulous time at this rental. The cottage is simple, but has all that you need for an amazing, relaxing retreat. Our children enjoyed the deck, beach, lake and board games. We enjoyed the beach, meals on the deck, and the quiet. The cottage is comfortable, relaxing, and has the most amazing piece of beach front property.
Our A-Frame is located 18 miles north of Harbor Springs and 3 miles north of the Good hart Store off of M-119. The long driveway to the house is just south of Island View rd.
