I was concerned about a few details before renting this house, especially the location right on Highway 1 and the shared driveway. I'm very happy to report that we never knew we were on Highway 1 while we were there because the house is downhill from the roadway, and the privacy was not hindered by the shared drive (we never saw a car on it) or the adjacent highway. All you see from the very appealing living/dining area is Tomales Bay. Several sets of binoculars are provided in the living room and came in handy for bird watching. Down below, the equally appealing family room offers a closer view and we saw California quail on the small lawn as well as sea otters, seals, innumerable birds and stingrays from the dock.
The interior is great (much more pleasing than the outside of the house suggests) and I've never rented a house with such a well-stocked kitchen before. Tons of firewood, charming fireplace, fabulous beds & bedding. Also a good piano. Nice baths and good laundry facilities. There is a very narrow and steep spiral staircase in the kitchen that takes you down to the 3 bedrooms and family room and we actually preferred to take the outside stairs. That staircase is the only thing we found problematic, but given the location and amenities, it's worth putting up with. Definitely not for toddlers or the weak-kneed. It would be helpful to have a dog/child gate at the top of this stair--we used our cooler so our old dog wouldn't tumble down. It was plenty big for a family of 4 and we could have comfortably had another 2 or 3 guests there.
The rental agency is great to work with and they returned our security deposit pronto, which is not something that happens as much as I think it should anymore.
I'd love to stay again and kayak to Nick's Cove in the summer. But we hiked all over, including up Clark's Road just down Highway 1, which is good in wet weather and provides a wonderful view from the ocean to Napa at the top. Many wild turkeys, bluebirds and other creatures on the hike. Can't wait to go back in warmer weather and take advantage of the dock.
