Cabin, 1 Bedroom + Loft, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 5)
I am a Dad with 3 children. I have been going up to the cabin since 1967, and my kids have been going up since they were newborns.
RC purchased this Cabin in 1965
Why RC chose Lutsen
I purchase the cabin from my two aunts, my uncle and my father when they inherited it from my grandmother after her death. I have been going up there since 1967.
What makes this Cabin unique
Very close to the lake. No highway noise. Very private location. Cabin rates high on character and charm. Cabin is a great place to escape from city life and read, talk, sleep, walk, hike, play games, etc.

Beautiful place but VERY UNCLEAN
We have stayed in cabins, mostly rustic, for decades. This is the least clean and most expensive.
The "linens" on the table and counter tops were dirty and burned, so I moved them to the porch. Any dish I grabbed was dirty. The drainer tray was moldy both top and bottom. The scrub brush was filthy so I put the drainer and the scrubber in the sun to detox throughout our stay. The bathroom mats had dirt and debris on top of a ghastly grey overall grimy color on what was at one time a white rug. The extra rug on the shelf was dirty and unwashed as well. The faucet in the bathroom had a scum buildup under the faucet showing perhaps it is cleaned only on the top. gross. The floor was not swept so we swept it. The sweeper wasn't working so we emptied the full dust canister and unclogged the hose. The curtains were so filthy it was disturbing to touch them. We see the same curtains in the photos from the '60's in the photo album and they all look like they've not been washed in fifty years. We hesitated to move them. The thermostat wasn't working because the connection was poor. SO, we started a fire. After ensuring the flue was open and enjoying the fire that was venting as much as possible, the amount of smoke fumes in the cabin was suffocating all night. My clothes smelled like a campfire afterwards. We figured out how to shim the thermostat on day three, to avoid another fire. That was disappointing because it is a lovely fireplace and a desirable part of the experience in renting the place. Safety issues - including the fireplace chimney needing to be cleaned, a tree threatening to fall on the propane tank outside and the house, slippery deck stairs that don't reach the length of the deck drop-off, stuff jammed up against the water heater look like a fire hazard.
Communications about booking costs were confusing and took far too much of my time. I had to write a few times – and wait -- and call and write VRBO to understand the charges that never did display correctly on the website, leading me to worry about hidden costs. Owner said that our refund was handled by the agency, caused me to call them and spend yet more time, to learn that in fact he handles the refund. Insult upon injury - requiring your guests to haul out our own garbage – and the dumpster that your note mentioned was not there so there we are heading home with a packed car AND garbage bags scanning YOUR community for an unguarded dumpster to freeload upon. Not very neighbourly.
Rustic and comfortable, a rare find.
This is the place to lay back and enjoy the quiet. To get up early and see the sky come to life before sunrise. The cabin lacked for nothing.
Needed more time.
Great location and comfortable ambiance. It was nice to unplug and relax and unwind for 3 days after spending a week camping with extended family. Lakeshore views were beautiful, watched full moon rising from shore campfire. We will return!
Nostalgic Cabin on the Shore of Lake Superior
Three friends were able to stay for 5 nights in this nostalgic cabin on the shore of Lake Superior. It is well located between Lutsen and Grand Marais off the beaten path of Hwy 61. It is quaint and contains lots of family history. We really enjoyed the location and the access to the water. It was peaceful to relax on the rocks any time of day or night, observing the changing character of the water. It feels private even though neighbors are relatively close, but out of sight at the cabin and on the shore.
We were able to relax in the evening playing games or reading while listening to Mozart on the phonograph. (we remembered how to use it).
The only critiques are: 1. Beds are well worn. We prefered the 3 on the main level (2 singles and 1 double) as the loft was less inviting due to the difficulty of access with the ladder. 2. Deck chairs: unusable, so we brought the kitchen chairs out to enjoy it more comfortably.
We had a great time hiking and exploring the area- especially Fisherman's Picnic. We'll be back.
Wouldn’t stay there again.
The setting was wonderful! Loved being on that beautiful lake! But the cabin was uncomfortable. Not a comfortable chair or bed. And shocked at the final cost. Will be back to the North Shore but will not stay there.
Great location and view!
We spent a long weekend here and really enjoyed our stay.. It is a lovely location with an incredible view and 3 very comfortable beds. It is an old family cabin reflecting the personality of the owners so understand that it really is a cabin. The lake is in full view and was my favorite thing about it. It's set up well for a family as there are no bedrooms with doors. The drinking water tasted great and the kitchen has everything you need. . A wonderful place to be 'off' the grid.
