About Karen or Steve Sawin

Karen & I purchased this condominium for our retirement. We grew up in Wisconsin, married and attended university there. We owned an oceanfront motel in Kill Devil Hills for 45 years and still live on a portion of that property. We have two children and have 6 grandchildren living on the Outer Banks and another child and four more grandchildren on Chapel Hill, NC.

Our son Christopher is the director of the Dare County Arts Council half a block away from this rental.

Karen or Steve Sawin purchased this condo in 2004

Why Karen or Steve Sawin chose Manteo

This is a jewel of a little town. Hugged by water and touched by limitless sky, Manteo feels as open as what surrounds it. Locals say hello and smile a welcome to visitors. The town’s kids can be watched joyously jumping off the bridge that leads to Festival Park in the summer heat. And every direction you look, there’s an interesting shop, beckoning restaurant, creative art gallery, fun attraction … and such beautiful scenery. From one spot on the boardwalk that surrounds the waterfront town, you can see Roanoke Island Marshes Lighthouse, Elizabeth II, flags fluttering, sails catching breezes and vessels docked alongside each other, a playground with prancing kids, a gazebo perched over the water, attractive bed and breakfasts and inns and people happily taking in all the pleasure this town offers.

What makes this condo unique

A spectacular view of the harbor and the Albemarle Sound all the way to the Nags Head beaches and the ocean can be seen from your front porch. A waterfront walk-way runs from nearby grocery stores and shops past your apartment on to the Festival Park with live amphitheater, museum and historic boat replica. Deep sea fishing charter inlets beckon from two nearby locations and miles and miles of canals to be explore by kayak start a few miles away.

Great extended spring break weekend

  • 5 of 5

What a great place to spend the long weekend. Steve was a pleasure to meet and a great host. He met us at the condo, helped us get our luggage in and walked us around the place. The views are magnificent and the unit could not be located in a better spot. Walking distance to nearly everything you'd want to see or do in Manteo. This unit is definitely on our favorites list.

Owner's Response: It is a joy to have shared our second home as a hideaway from the stress and noise of daily living. Get away, come rest awhile, and return a new person. Think Andy Griffith. He used to live here when he wasn't working.

This Manteo Condo Surrounds You in Old Beach Town Charm

  • 5 of 5

We have been coming to the Outer Banks for more than 25 summers, but never have we stayed in Manteo. I am so very happy to say that this beautiful condo helped us to understand that Manteo is the perfect beach get away (and frankly where I would love to retire). Gorgeous views, old town charm, no congestion, lots of history, great eateries (with NO wait), live music on the weekends, miles of walking, running, biking, water sports. But the BEST thing about this condo is that it offers some very friendly neighbors! Everyone was so willing to share a smile and a story of how this little town lured them to stay. I still can't get over all we were offered for so little a price. I am hopeful we will be able to return to this condo for many summers to come!

Great location for the July 4th Holiday.

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at the property over the July 4th Holiday. The balcony was the perfect place to watch the Manteo fireworks. We could also see several other fireworks shows going on at the beach. The parking is below the condo building so we had to remove the cargo box from our minivan to park. We found a spot to stow it so it worked out just fine. Great place to stay.

BEWARE of Dare Day (First Saturday in June)

  • 4 of 5

Owner - The owner's son manages the property and was very easy to get in touch with and was very helpful. He asked that we meet him at his work (a block from the condo) to get the key and keycard.

Condo: The condo was GREAT! Its pretty large for a 3 bedroom with plenty of room to spare. I loved the view of the boars and sound. Also, being right over several great restaurants and shops is great. I would say the drive to the beach is about 10-15 minutes.

The only issue I had with the property and property owner was DARE DAY. Dare day is the annual festival they have in DT Manteo. The condo sits on the main street of downtown manteo where the festival takes place. The owners son had let us know about dare day and said we should not have any issues accessing our parking garage. Unfortunately, the set up the kids rides right in front of the garage and we could not access for almost two days. The closest parking was .25-.50 miles away. No Joke.. This was terrible with my elderly grandparents and trying to unpack our vehicles.
