Looking for a classic Northwoods lake house vacation?
A private family estate since the 1920s is now LOST LAKE PRIVATE RETREAT — a lake retreat for your getaway! This historic house was part of a private artist’s colony in the 1970s and ’80s. Original stand-up, whole log construction. Only a handful of this classic design remain in all the Northwoods.
Set among towering virgin White Pines and a nature preserve, this is a PRIVATE lakefront Retreat, with a long driveway through the woods, your own pier, swimming raft, fire pit and optional guest cabin (to add another bedroom and bath). Closest neighbor on one side is 500 feet away along the lake shore! The other neighbor is a walk through the woods to your friendly property owners.
Featuring two screened-in porches, a glass-walled dining room, large living room, three bedrooms (firm mattresses!), plus optional pull-out sofa sleeper and/or private guest cabin with full bath. Retro kitchen and baths — not luxury, but clean, functional and fitting for this nostalgic property. One guest commented that it’s “the kind of place where they’d film a movie—the kind of place you don’t want to leave.”
The Retreat includes rowboat, canoe, two mountain bikes. Friendly lake community … get to know locals and other vacationers at the twice-weekly waterfront softball games.
The Retreat is a 3300 sqft home on 5 wooded acres, with over 500 feet of private sandy shoreline.
541-acre Lost Lake is a serious fishing lake — ranked as one of Wisconsin’s premier fishing lakes by “Badger Sportsman” magazine. Lost Lake recorded award winning musky the last two years. The lake is also great for waterskiing and pontoon boating. Lots of great hiking and biking in the immediate area.
Retreat is perfect for artists, retirees, nature lovers and other low-impact guests who will respect this historic house.
Need to spread out for additional family, or privacy? Rustic side cabin available, sleeps two, with full bath.
Our family has owned property on Lost Lake since 1917. The Retreat is a treasured home that was originally the Galbeck estate, which included 1000 feet of lake frontage and 100 acres of woods. The history of this area is my passion to preserve. I love the north woods and my family history is here. My wife and I live next door to The Retreat in a large home called Blueberry Camp. Back in the 1920's homes were called camps as it was really roughing it back then, old outhouses still exist behind our home!
I was read stories by lantern light as a child in the 1950's when the electricity shut down by falling trees or lightning strikes. The phone was a on a 'party line', two long rings and a short was 'our' call.
Lost lake is the perfect sized lake with 220 shoreline owners that we call friends. My brothers and I learned to barefoot waterski on Lost Lake. But also, we have caught walleye as well as filled a creel or two with spring crappie. Please join us. Jack and Linda Peil
Jack and Linda Peil purchased this estate in 1962
The Retreat is next door to our property and summer home that my great grandfather (Dr. Gaebler) bought in 1917. He was best friends with Dr. Galbeck who owned the Retreat.
Thus we wanted to save the Retreat and upgrade it so guests could enjoy living in a real original lake home.
Plenty of room and solitude. You are by yourselves. Privacy. Your own world to enjoy. This is a unique estate home from 1920. Artists love it, but also extended families with children and adult children have plenty of room inside and out.
And there is a connected 80 acres of your private hiking trails in dense woods.
This review has been a loonnnggg time coming. From July 2015 actually; sorry for the late post. We've recently reviewed our vacation spots from the last 10 years (we take a memorable/ planned vacation once or twice per year, in Wisconsin). By far, this was rated the best spot with all family members! This lakeside home is beautiful; just incredible, much bigger than imagined and so full of history...especially for anyone with art/history interest. (Just so happens, I am an artist and so I 'connected' with the 'history' of the prior owners, they have awesome artwork/family history throughout). Decorated very comfortably and incredibly nostalgic, in excellent condition inside and out. For my husband & sons/friends, the fishing was incredible, found a crappy bed and pulled them out every few seconds! along with big walleye and bass. We found a bait shop in town & were able to bring back live crawfish for a crawfish boil at the 'homestead'! Yum! So fun to teach a bunch of teenagers this classic tradition! The yard is wonderful, several private acres! Big campfire area, beautiful steps down to the pier. Incredible wildlife, saw deer almost every morning, also bald eagles, etc....YOU"LL love it, I'm positive!
Go into town for one of the best flea markets (St. Germain) & some of the best restaurants in the northwoods!
I personally would vacation here EVERY summer (if it were only my vote in this family).
This property was just what my family and I were looking for. The place was beautiful and enjoyable. We stayed for a whole week and didn't want to leave. This house made us feel like home, everything we needed was there. Not a day past were we felt bored.
The house is in expellant condition, and has great history behind it. The place does look even more beautiful in person.
The lake it self was great also. We caught 4 pikes and 1 bass. Even if you fish from the dock you might catch something nice. The water is clear and clean and the girls went swimming on the hot days.
We did a lot of sightseeing. There are many eagles nests near the house and you will see many of them flying and sitting right near the house.
The owners Jack and Linda were very helpful through out the visit. They answered all the questions and recommended awesome places to see.
This property was amazing and BEAUTIFUL. Defiantly coming back again!
We LOVED our week in St. Germain at this beautiful, private, house. We enjoyed the beach including the eagles that flew around the property daily. We love nature so all the wildlife in the area was awesome. The spotless historical home with a 1920s feel was really fun to live in. The photos are great but I thought the house was even better than the photos. Jack and Linda (owners) were very friendly and helpful. I recommend this vacation retreat to anyone who wants a special, relaxing experience at a beautiful, private, quiet, retreat. We all feel rejuvenated!
A beautiful home on a wonderful lake. This is a vacation spot that is perfect for a family or a couple that wants to go somewhere to relax and read. There are wonderful quaint towns nearby and the lake is perfect for all water sports. Great canoeing opportunities on the
Wisconsin river. Or just take a walk in the woods. It's all there for you.
The amount of property and lakefront was more than we thought possible. And the home was much larger than the photo's. What a beautiful historic home in the northwoods! The pier and waterfront is endless, and all to ourselves. The kids had such a great time. We will rebook every year.
Our stay this fall was fantastic. We walked and relaxed in the woods, and spent time on the Lake which is just a few feet from the house. The scent of pine, eagles flying overhead, the clear blue sky made this one of the most relaxing vacations ever.
Thanks, can't wait to get back.
The Retreat is located in 'The Northwoods' of Wisconsin. Surrounded by state land and dense woods. Vilas County has over 1300 lakes. Original settlers arrived just 100 years ago. This area is remote with a colorful history.
