No Better Home Away From Home!

  • 5 of 5

We were a group of 8 adults and 2 dogs, my daughter and son-in-law's families together for their first Christmas as a married couple. Joyce's house was taylor made for us. Comfortable, comfortable, and did I mention how comfortable it is?! Having the 2 living rooms, each with more than enough seating options and each with its own fireplace, enabled everyone to engage in their favorite indoor pastimes, be it lounging in front of the fire with a good book, watching TV, challenging others to a game of pool, or relaxing in the hot tub after a day of skiing. The house was beautifully decorated for the holiday, and incredibly well equipped for the cooks among us. There was not a single utensil or pan we needed that was not at our fingertips. And the view from the house was spectacular. Location was perfect, minutes from skiing, restaurants, sleigh rides, and the Ben and Jerry's Factory tour! I cannot say enough to thank Joyce for how receptive she was to handling all our questions throughout the whole process, from my initial inquiry about the property to our departure at the end of our week. I would highly recommend this house to everyone, and hope to rent again in the future. Thank you Joyce for enabling us to have a most memorable holiday!

Pluses and Minuses

  • 3 of 5

My wife and I and our infant son shared this house with some friends during the last two weeks of August 2014. We had a great time and really loved Stowe in the summertime. The house itself was a mix of positives and negatives.

The positives: The location - on a quiet street about a mile from Mt. Mansfield - was quiet and convenient. The house easily accommodated our group, with enough bedrooms, bathrooms, and common space so we didn't feel cramped. And the roomy deck, with a gas grill, was wonderful. The clay tennis courts (about a 15-minute walk - or easy drive - down the hill from the house) were excellent and always empty. (The pool next to the courts we didn't use much - it's small and was somewhat buggy.) Given the house's location and size, it was a relative bargain. The house's owner, Joyce, was easy to work with in setting up the rental, and very responsive when issues arose during our stay.

The negatives: We arrived on a Saturday afternoon to find a note telling us that the house's oil supply was empty and there would be no hot water until sometime Monday. To her credit, Joyce partially compensated us for those two days. Then, during our first few days in the house, we found that several of the windows did not close or their cranks fell off; the garbage disposal did not work (based on the instructions we were given before we arrived, this seemed to have been a recurring issue); and the hot water knob on the master sink did not turn. Again to her credit, Joyce resolved these issues expeditiously. The house could also use some significant improvements and updates - for example, some of the mattresses were very uncomfortable, with jabbing springs, and the carpeting seemed overdue for retirement or at least reinstallation, as some of the nails holding it in place protruded from the floor.

Of course, renovations or even significant upgrades might inevitably result in an increased rental price. And the house has clearly received some updates over the years - the flat screen TVs, electric range, and washer/dryer all seemed fairly recent, for example.

In sum, the house served as a relatively inexpensive home base for what was unquestionably a wonderful vacation. If you want a better furnished house, you'll probably need to spend more.

Owner's Response: It really saddens me to read this review. I did everything within my power to satisfy this party. I would like to address a few of his negatives. I received word from my caretaker that the hot water was not working on Saturday, at 3:00 o'clock and renters were arriving at 3:30. Therefore, I asked my caretaker to leave a note for renters that I was aware of the problem and was working on it. Unfortunately, the oil company has changed from local to a national company and all I could reach was the national office and they said nobody would be available till Monday. On Monday at 8:00 o'clock I was on the phone getting someone to the house. Oil was delivered just in case that was the issue, but the workman from the company went there twice cause he didn't think that was the issue. I have a 1000 gallon tank. However, by 10;00 o'clock the hot water was working. ( possible air in the line is what I was told). The tenants had a baby and did not want to stay without hot water for a day;so, I told them to find other lodging. They chose Top Notch, one of the most expensive lodgings in Stowe. I did compensate them for two nights at the rate they were paying me, because there other guests arrived on Sunday, knowing of the problem, and stayed in the house with four people. As for the windows, my caretaker had left them open because of the heat in August. It was meant to make the house comfortable for their arrival. Yes, a couple of the windows were difficult to close due to swelling. My caretaker was there on Sunday morning taking care of it and replacing any loose cranks. After the tenant moved back in on Monday, I received an email about the garbage disposal being clogged. It was ok before this rental moved in: I hadn't had any complaints the week before, but again I had my caretaker there immediatley to unclog it The note in my information paper to tenants just asks them to be careful with what is put down the disposal and allowed to go down the sink drain. This is not because there is anything wrong with disposal ( disposal only one year old), but because people are often careless and too much pasta will clog up the disposal. As for the furnishings, the living room furniture and living room carpet are only five years old. I find the beds comfortable. But let me say, I don't advertise my house as a five star resort. But for size, location, amenities, fireplaces, deck, it is a wonderful ski house. Might I add at reasonable prices too.

good value for family vacation

  • 4 of 5

This place was an excellent value for our group. We had 7 adults, a teenager and 2 young kids. It worked out well with the bedrooms (the flannel sheets were a nice touch!) and had PLENTY of space to stretch out. Had a few issues with a bathroom plumbing and icy driveway but owner took care of both promptly. Liked very much that firewood, linens and toilet paper were included....However, we were not fond of the glass stove countertop as we felt we had to be extra careful (fortunately we did not mark it up) while cooking as well as the glass tables (always felt like we would scratch or break one). Did not get to use the deck as it was covered in snow and the grill was not available. Basement was a bit musty, even after we turned on dehumidifier. I would recommend this place to others interested in a house close to the mountain.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Michelle, for taking the time to write a review. Glad you enjoyed yourself and found the house comfortable. Given the house is rented, buying a glasstop stove was not favorite thing to do; however, since the house is electric, there were not many attractive options in an electric stove, except the glass top. I also want to thank you for your diligence in letting me know of anything you had a problem with; this really helps a landlord to be able to make a tenant's rental comfortable. The musty smell was due to the leak you told me about in the game room. My caretaker took care of it immediately after you left; it was a heat radiator that was leaking. So, all is in good order now. Again I appreciate your review. Joyce

Not as advertised

  • 2 of 5

I can not imagine the experiences of folks who rated this house 5/5. I suppose if the goal is to pack as many people in a house and just have beds to flop down in at the end of a ski day, then maybe it is OK. But if you actually want to cook, entertain and be comfortable, then it was ridiculous. The list seems endless (and believe it or no, I am not hard to please):

There were no pans to cook with (bacon was made in an OLD electric fry pan), and

There were next to NO matching glasses, silverware, etc to be found.

The decor was almost laughable with lots of animal prints and horrible colors.

The bathrooms, fixtures, etc. are extremely outdated.

There was one BR with the toilet seat unattached.

When we arrived, after a day of hiking, my husband had to figure out how to even turn the hot water heater on!

That said, the weekend was sunny and warm (Fall 2012) and the deck was nice- but the house was a wreck. Sorry-

Owner's Response: As an owner how upsetting to receive such a review. Especially since it is filled with so many inaccuracies and exaggerations. The reviewer said they stayed the weekend of October 26th. I am just wondering why they did not call either me nor my caretaker during their stay with their concerns or questions. A lengthy information sheet concerning the house had been made available to them with both telephone numbers. To infer that the house was nothing better than a flop house is indeed extremely insulting. The pictures speak for themselves. It is a wonderful house in one of the finest resorts in Stowe. Certainly not the type of area or clientele where a flophouse would be allowed or tolerated. There are three lovely upper level bedrooms, one lower level bedroom and a privately located day bed. All of which have attractive bedding. The animal prints referred to is just someone not liking the wallpaer in the bedroom, which is sand and sand colored. It does show in the pictures. Most people like it. The rest of the house is painted in an off white paint, and there are NO animal pictures. The kitchen is more than amply suplied with an oversized electric frying pan and many other pots and pans and kitchen ware in both the kitchen and dining room. There is even additional dishware in the cabinet in the living room. As for utensils, they are located in ample number in both the kitchen and dining room, with many glasses, including wine and cocktail glasses, and a wine frigidaire. Bathrooms are kohler fixtures. If the hot water switch was inadvertently turned off, all it would have taken was a simple phone call to either me or my caretaker and the question would have been answered immediately. It was merely a red switch at the bottom of the staircase that must have been accidentally switched off. The house is exactly as the pictures portray: nicely furnished, two roaring fireplaces, very welcoming atmosphere, and many amenities for comfort. My caretaker is constantly upgrading or improving the house. It is thoroughly cleaned after each rental. If issues arise during a rental, we try to address them immediately. Looking back at the October 26th rental weekend, I would say that for six people for two weekend nights the rent was extremely reasonable. If more was expected than what my house offered, this renter would probably be more comfortable staying in a hotel. Unofrtunately, no house nor decor is going to meet everyone's taste and style.

Fabulous House - Def'ly Renting Again Next Year!!!

  • 5 of 5

First off, I want to say thank you to Joyce for allowing us to rent her house last weekend. This house is LARGE - enough room so the people don't feel like they are on top of one another. The pool table/hot tub/poker table room downstairs was a treat - and the dual living rooms each with HD flat screen tv's and separate fireplaces allowed people upstairs to watch NFL playoff football while people downstairs watched movies. The kitchen/dining room area was fully stocked with plates/cooking utensils, etc. - the only thing we had to buy was the food, everything else was there already. The sleeping arraingments worked out perfectly because there is actually an extra day bed (two twin beds) downstairs that is not shown on the website that can be used for two singles or a couple. The house is literally 5 minutes from Stowe Resort - a big change from the house we rented in the past which was 20 minutes away. It definitely nice to come from the mountain and have a quick drive back to the house. In terms of the rental process, it couldn't have been easier - Joyce was responsive through email and phone.

Thank you again Joyce - it was a memorable weekend!!!

Owner's Response: Thank you, Clay, for writing such a nice review. I am thrilled you and your guests had such a great time. That's what the house is for. Even the snow cooperated. As requested, I have already booked you for next year. Thank you too for leaving the house in good condition. My caretaker said it was well taken care of. Enjoy the rest of 2012, and see you in 2013. Great Stowe house!

  • 5 of 5

I rented this house for my family of 7, including kids (aged18-24), and 1 golden retriever. We had a great time! The house was very spacious, we loved the amenities, including the pool table and hot tub. It was close to the ski area - and not too far from the town. Joyce (the owner) was great to work with, and answered my questions promptly. I would recommend this house and would like to return next year!

Owner's Response: Thank, you, Victoria, for taking the time to write this review. I am sooo glad you had the opportunity to spend part of the holiday season at my home with your family. It is not too often that we get the chance to be with our grown children. Their lives are so busy. I hope the remainder of 2012 is kind to you and your family and look forward to seeing you in 2013. Ski: Mount Mansfield is the premier ski resort in the East. Trails are suited for the beginner and challenging enough for the most expert. Many famous Olympians had their beginnings in Stowe. There are three main mountain areas:

Main Mountain, Little Spruce (for beginners and novice skiers) and Big Spruce. Each area has several lifts from gondola to very fast chairs. Not longer will you wait in long lines to ski. To warm up or have lunch you can visit the new base lodge at Spruce which is attached to the new, luxurious Stowe Mountain Lodge. A must to visit.

If time allows you should spend an evening at the Lodge for dinner and drinks by the gorgeous fireplaces. After a day of hard skiing you might want to make a reservation at the beautiful spa. The Village in Stowe and the mountain road offer some of the best dining you can find. There is so much to do. You can't help but have a Great Time in Stowe!
