Deborah Hamilton purchased this house in 1999
Comfortable, nicely furnished, and ideally located between the Beach and the Basin, this home was beautifully renovated in 1986 and has remarkable privacy, lilacs, and tree-shaded grounds.
Wrap around deck and easy access to the beach, plus Mad Martha's Cafe is right next door for breakfast or lunch!
We just spent a great week at this house. It accommodated two families with several small children well for the first few days and was just as enjoyable for a visit from my father later in the week. It is simple, but nice with some nice touches that show someone really cares for the property. 3 real bedrooms plus the extra downstairs sleeping area. Owners were great.
Plum Island was lovely and we did it all. Biked around the island, checked out the local restaurants on the island, kayaked in the basin, explored the different beaches, and went into Newburyport for other meals out and shopping. Tip for those with kids: The Purple Onion is a nice little cafe in town with outdoor tables right next to a nice shady playground. Score!
Other good tidbits to know: they have TONS of beach gear in very good shape. Chairs, umbrellas, kites, toys, boogie boards, etc. Two nice bicycles were also a pleasure to find. The kitchen is well stocked and there was nothing we wished for that wasnt there. Coffee filters, paper products and basic spices were there as well. The front bedroom has a twin bed and not very comfortable futon. no other beds for two people other than the queen in the master. The house behind burned down hours after we left, so that might change the landscape a bit.
Location is an easy walk from the "main st", which has only a few shops and restaurants. 2 houses and a road to cross to get to the beach in just a couple of minutes. Ocean and basin views, especially upstairs. There are quieter parts of the island, but we enjoyed being in the middle of things. Its not a party town by any means, so it was never super busy.
We had a delightful time during our stay at "Another World!" The cottage is charming, clean, and modern with comfy beds and lovely views from the decks. The walk to the beach is the easiest we've had in years of coming to Plum Island. The owners are friendly and helpful. The layout is great for a group. There are places to gather and places to take some quiet time. Can't recommend it highly enough!!
Great place to stay with plenty of space. Beach is super quiet and Newburyport is nearby for things to do on any rainy days. Watch carefully and you might see the family of piping plovers that lives on the beach right near where you walk in from the road!
We had a minor issue where some maintenance needed to be performed while we were there that the owner handled professionally and courteously. I'd definitely stay here again if I end up on Plum Island next year.
Things to check out while you're there:
-the park at the north end of the island
-nature preserves (plum island, parker river, Joppa flats)
-Salisbury or Hampton (if you want fireworks, that's where you have to go...watching from PI is not so great)
My family and I have stayed at Another World several times now, and have always had enjoyable, memorable times. The house is fresh, clean, light and sunny, with plenty of sleeping space for a family or two. We pile in and take advantage of the close proximity to the beach for sunning, and to the river basin for kayaking. You couldn't ask for sweeter or more accommodating hosts! There's a cool little restaurant just steps away from the house, Mad Martha's, which is a favorite for locals. I would definitely recommend this lovely beach home to anyone who is looking for an authentic Plum Island Beach getaway!
"Another World" - this vacation home on Plum Island couldn't have been more aptly named!
We have rented this home for seven years running, and the two weeks we spend here in August every year fulfill our vacation expectations in every way.
Deb and Alex provide a large, warm, accommodating, and comfortable home - where from the moment you step inside, you feel as though this relaxing space is your own. Your vacation has begun! The decor is nautical-themed and soothing... the open floor plan brings in light from all sides. You can enjoy views of the basin from the back deck and see and feel the ocean from the front windows. The sun sets on the back deck and rises in the east bedroom. You can unplug easily on Plum Island. We came here as kids, and the island is still as it was in the 70s... pure and unspoiled. This house evokes the best of those memories.
We love this location - the beach path right at the top of the street leads to the best part of the beach. Deb and Alex provide kayaks, boogie boards, toys, chairs, and umbrellas - your beach days are perfect... coming back and forth to the house for supplies or snacks is effortless. Another World couldn't be more conveniently located for the optimal beach experience.
The house has all you need for winding down after a beach day - on the deck with friends and family, burgers on the grill, sunset over the basin - it offers all accoutrements you need. And, you are as connected with TV/internet as you want/need to be; but as much as we have loved watching a movie, playing our guitars, reading, or doing a puzzle in the living space at night, we've also stargazed on the deck and ventured a late night swim just across the street - thus is the beauty of this special house!
This sounds like a travelogue for Plum Island, but it is really a paean for our beloved summer home, Another World. We have never found a place that makes us feel so comfortable while providing all the conveniences we need and desire. This house easily accommodates a group or family and can sleep at least 8 people comfortably. We have celebrated birthdays, summer, and life with friends and family here. It is amazing how in this house so many people can coexist, so comfortably! We leave every year buoyant, filled with peace and love, and sunburned... with memories of sunset on the deck of Another World... burgers... clams at Bob Lobster... and the time the high tide turfed us... Then we start counting the days until we return.
'Another World is on a quiet, dead end street with dune grass and water views. Idyllic landscaped grounds have a picnic area and shady corners for a quiet read. Ideal setting to take in all the fun and action in Newburyport and along the seacoast. From deep sea fishing to historical houses, art galleries to waterfront festivals, harbor tours to kayaking, bikes to surfboards, Plum Island has it all in an accessible, compact package!
