Why the Owner Chose Grächen:
I used to visit this small mountain village as a child with my family every winter and summer. We spent so many happy times in the beautiful place. We would visit Zermatt, and hike all day. This place is very special to me and to my family, and that is why we bought the house.

I was born and raised in Switzerland and have been to Grachen many, many times as a child and as an adult. I received a business degree from a school in Olten and loved to learn languages. I lived in Lausanne for 2 years to learn French, I learned Italian and German in school an then decided to visit America to learn English. I was homesick and when I called my mom, she said, 'Don't come home until you learn English.' Then a met a cute guy that likes to sail by the ocean. We got married and I have two college age kids, one boy Marco and a girl named Martina that both speak Swiss-German. Needless to say, my English is perfect after 28 years married and living in near Santa Cruz, California. Thanks for visiting my website and I hope you can rent our storybook house in Grachen, Switzerland. You will not regret it...
Pia Middione purchased this chalet in 1990
My mom and dad took our whole family up to Grachen every winter and summer. We skiied in the winter and hiked the mountains in the summer. My brother bought the upper unit and he asked me if I wanted to buy the lower unit, so we did. This little chalet is all you need to relax and enjoy the surrounding beauty and activites. It makes you feel like stepping back in time when life was simpler, people were nicer, and yet it has all the conveniences of modern life. Banks, TV, fine restaurants, music on week-ends, open trails to everywhere. You feel at peace here, and the Matterhon and Zermatt are nearby to visit and enjoy! Grachen is such a charming place!
From the Chalet in Grachen you feel like you are on top of the world. The mighty Alps surround the Chalet and most of the high peaks are snow covered year around. The air if pure and fresh and in the surroundings you can still see some cows or sheep grazing in the hills with an occasional encounter with a ram or mountain goat along the trails. A glacier is nearby and can be reached in less than 2 hours. This is the perfect place to relax and rediscover inner peace.
We thank you for this wonderful week in your snow owl.
It was ideal with 2 small boys and we would like to come back next fall.
We have cleaned everything and hope we have left everything well.
We stayed for the second year for one week in the apartment, for our winter holiday with our 7-year old twins. We enjoyed the Grächen ski area, which is great both for our kids and for us as parents. The ski area is rather compact but with some very beautiful slopes, especially the long Stafel-Seetalhorn and Plattje, and also the slope down to the village. The apartment is about 5-10 minutes walk from the gondola to the ski area. We left our ski's in the lockers at the gondola, otherwise the climb to the apartment will be tough on ski-shoes. After a day of skiing the way back is a nice climb. The apartment is nice and complete including fast internet and a new TV. The shower is indeed small but operating well, good for us. If we come back to Grächen we will look for the apartment again.
My husband and I stayed here at this wonderful chalet in Grachen. We loved the town, the people, the hiking and everything Grachen had to offer. The chalet was perfect although the bathroom shower is hard to use. It is awkward and small. But other than that we loved everything. Please also be aware that it is a bit of a hike up to the chalet so keep that in mind. We didn't mind. It had plenty of room for the two of us with an extra bedroom that we really didn't use. It had a nice kitchen and living room as well.
It was so nice to spread out and enjoy the roomy chalet. We loved being in this chalet that was along the highest level of dwellings in the village. We were able to look down on everything. Some reviews talked about the challenge of finding it. So let me put here what one does if you are using public transportation (as we were): you get to St. Niklaus by train. Soon a bus comes for Grachen (times are posted right there at the train station). The bus takes you to Grachen. Upon first arrival, when we asked local people for help, here was the vital information: have at your finger tips the name of the chalet in Swiss German. That is "Schnee Eule" (Snow Owl). Local people will probably not understand "Snow Owl". Additional back-up info plan: at the Tourist information center in the village, there are little free maps outside that you can use even when the info center is closed. It has ALL the chalets and hotels of the entire village, assigning each a number that you can find on the map.
Often in Switzerland, grocery stores close at 16h on Saturdays. We were overjoyed to find one that stayed open to 19 p.m.
We happened to arrive on a rainy weekend. On Sunday we walked down to the village and had a hearty lunch in one of the most beautiful, cozy restaurants we have ever been in. You can see it for yourself on the web: restaurant walliserkanne & sigis.bar, Grächen, Switzerland. We were cold (in August!). We went to Sigi's and had the traditional dish Rösti. We enjoyed the service, the beauty of the place and the food. Warmed us completely.
We enjoyed the village of Grachen and the hiking trail behind our chalet. Also, the short bus ride back down to St. Niklaus made it easy to get to Zermatt and the Matterhorn and other great mountain destinations. I just want to emphasize that while we were considering staying here, we thought it might be hard to get to other places we wanted to visit using our Swiss passes. It was not difficult. It was easy, by riding the bus down to St. Niklaus, we could get to anywhere in the country (without a car).
The views from our chalet were also lovely. We could see the whole sky.
Chalet was as advertised, beds were comfortable, owner was responsive to things that came up during our stay.
Grachen was our favorite stop on our Europe trip. Traveled with grade school aged kids. We loved zip lining in Zermatt (day trip), hiking, mini golf, fabulous playgrounds. The scenery was jaw dropping beautiful. The town far exceeded our expectations. Switzerland is clean and efficient to travel. We will be back!
My wife and I spent a week in Schnee Eule and despite some indifferent weather early on had a great holiday. Local walks along the water channels through the pine woods were enlivened by the red and black squirrels as were the fascinating black eared sheep.Stunning views all round. Gornergrat railway from Zermatt not to be missed. We walked back down to avoid the summit crowds and catch the fine views of the Matterhorn.
The chalet was very comfortable, spotlessly clean with lovely quality bedding. TV and WIFI all fine. Our only criticism was the very small bath/shower. Tricky for old knees.
Overall excellent value and highly recommended.
very quiet and peaceful location, enough room, a bit 80s-style (we liked it) but new TV-Set, in beginning of sunny october almost nobody was there, we had 25° C and enjoyed the walks.
Ideal for snow skiing and snowboarding in the winter, this car-free ski village with offers slopes that are within walking distance of the Chalet. The world class ski slopes in Zermatt are about a 30 minute drive away, where it is possible to ski into Italy! Daily bus and train services are available to and from Zermatt and Grachen. Ski schools are very friendly and easy to find.
In the summer, Grachen offers some of the most spectacular hiking trails in the world. Quite forested trails are located throughout the hilly landscape, while more difficult rocky trails provide a range of opportunities for hikes and casual walks.
