This 2400 Sq. Ft. adobe home has three bedrooms, each separate from the others for the privacy adults prefer. Our priorities when furnishing our home were good mattresses, soft sheets and good reading lights. Our guests sleep 'like babies' here and we have several cozy reading places.
We added a 450 Sq. Ft. Dining Room and sitting area with a gas fireplace. This year we added the color coat and it looks beautiful!
We like to cook so we equipped the kitchen for a wide range of cooking and baking supplies. The cabinets are hand crafted and the new stone counter tops are a beautiful green slate with spectacular gray and white grain.
The teak dining table easily seats eight. The kitchen and dining area receive lovely morning light through a skylight and a French door to a stone patio.
Our home is fenced in with off street parking as well as a gated parking area and a small, fenced in back yard.
New Addition: We added a large room to the front of our house, to provide a dining area and a sitting area with a gas fireplace. We chose adobe construction, though it is costly, to preserve the comfortable feel of the house. We are very pleased with the work, done to a high standard, and the house continues to be very warm in winter and cool in summer.
Additionally, we added a large amount of counter space to the kitchen and it is a wonderful environment for cooking.
We have loved Taos and the Taos Ski Valley since our first trip here in 1983. We began looking around for some land to build on and were on our way to make an offer when we saw a photo of this house listed. We changed our plans, our agent arranged a visit and we bought the house! We have made many improvements, including a skylight in the kitchen, a second bathroom, a heating system and a gas fireplace in the kiva in the master bedroom. Most recently, we added several hundred square feet in adobe to give us a dining room and a sitting room, also equipped with a gas fireplace. We find it so comfortable that it is hard to go home to California, as we must do tomorrow.
Linda Eileen Keller purchased this house in 1992
There is something about adobe building that is soothing to the soul! Warm in the winter, cool in the summer and simply relaxing to be in.
I have heard from past guests that the photos don't do justice to the place. Just know that I have made it as beautiful and comfortable as I can. So, great mattresses, good reading lights, different areas to hang out in, bedrooms in separate areas of the house for privacy.
My husband, our two adult children and I had the supreme pleasure of staying at Bear House in Taos for eight days on our Christmas vacation. Bear House is a beautiful, authentic adobe home nestled off a quiet road amidst stands of huge, old cottonwoods, spruce and pine, which were cloaked in snow during most of Christmas week.
Private parking is just steps from the front door. Bear House is thoughtfully designed for the Taos lifestyle. One enters through the mudroom, which accommodated parkas, coats, hats, gloves and boots.
Just off the main hallway is a huge, well-appointed kitchen with every amenity desired for dining in. The appliances worked well. The dishwasher was a godsend – efficient and quiet. The kitchen opens out to a large dining area and great room with a gas fireplace and comfortable sofas for reading, working and playing games.
Three bedrooms are situated so that each has privacy and quiet for sleeping or reading -- undisturbed. The mattresses and box springs in each room were top-of-the-line, supportively firm and supremely comfortable. Linens were snowy white and warm. Like the rest of the home, the baths were spotless. The bath linens were luxurious and soft.
A huge den/library provides an additional area for reading, catching up on work or watching dvds. The huge master bedroom, with gas fireplace, and bath, are just steps from the den.
We enjoyed walks around the neighborhood, to the Plaza, to the Harwood and to Michael's for breakfast. The drive to Taos Ski Valley was less than half an hour.
Radiant heat kept this adobe home at a comfortable temperature day and night. Hot water in the kitchen and baths was immediate. Wi-Fi was super-fast and each of us could use our computers throughout Bear House. The property is large and in summer, there are three separate areas for dining al fresco or enjoying the beautiful light unique to Taos.
The owner takes deserved pride in this home. The owner anticipated our needs, provided useful information that made our stay delightful and was very responsive when we had questions. Booking and payment were seamless, the return of our damage deposit was swift.
We would love to stay here on another Taos vacation!
This is a beautiful, well-maintained, and fully stocked home. I would encourage the home-owner to have a professional photographer take photos, because the current pictures simply do not do it justice. The common areas are especially lovely, as well as the master suite, and the kitchen has every possible amenity, including a nesppresso coffee maker and milk foamer. It was impeccably clean, and stocked with ample paper products and soap. It is indeed a walking distance to Taos Plaza, which was helpful with our young adult children. The owner/caretaker was exceedingly pleasant to work with. I would definitely recommend this property to friends and relatives. My only suggestion would be to put twin beds in one of the bedrooms to increase the number of available beds, or perhaps a first rate pull out sofa in the back living room. Overall, this is a first rate property rented by very nice people.
The Bear House is one of the nicest houses we've ever stayed in. I kept moving with my tea and book from room to room, during our stay. I wanted to make sure I enjoyed every reading spot, every view. The newer living room is bright and airy and spacious. The older living room (it seemed older to me) is cozy and perfect for reading or movie watching. And the master bedroom is something out of a (well-furnished) dream. I was even sort of sorry the weather turned warmer, while we were there, because we so enjoyed watching the fire from bed.
If you cook, the kitchen will delight you. It's well stocked and well organized. And if you are bringing dog, the house really is fenced. Often I've rented places and the fenced area is sketchy at best. But Bear House fenced, which is a good thing, since there are coyotes in the area. And fox! It was great to hear the vixens early in the morning.
It's a lovely and easy walk to downtown. And I made a habit, in the evening, of walking up Las Cruces to Penitente Lane, following Penitente to the old Taos Morada, which is a gorgeous and strange spot.
And we got to practice piano as well. There's an upright grand piano in one of the bedrooms.
I wish I could give the house 6 stars. It's a 6 star house.
The Bear House was perfect for our family. My husband and I enjoyed the large master bedroom and our adult daughters each had their own bedrooms. The house is very spacious and so well decorated. I'm a big fan now of Taos blue. The kitchen was great, however, we never cooked in since we were always out and about. It was about a 10 minute walk into town, so we typically drove but it was nice being to get there so easily. My one daughter spent hours on the piano - that was a unique touch (guess I need to get our piano at home tuned now). A few minor areas for improvement - the showers could be improved - we never figured out how to use the overhead part of the one in the master bathroom and the girls said their shower was very low with bad pressure. Also, we would have liked shades on some windows - the bathroom in the hall and the small window in the master bedroom. We had to improvise to keep the sun from making a direct hit in our face in the morning. The house was always a perfect temp no matter the outside temperature. I would definitely recommend the house and would love to come back again to Taos and Bear House.
The pictures did not do the house justice! It was incredibly roomy and so convenient for walking to the plaza & kit Carson park. My only complaint was the heat. There were a lot of windows without screens, so getting a cross breeze was hard. We brought a couple of fans with us so that made the heat bearable. Larger fans or ceiling fans would have been great! Thanks again for a wonderful home & we are referring others!
We very much enjoyed our stay in this house. The furnishings are comfortable, the kitchen has every tool an avid home chef desires, there is an extensive library, and the art is beautiful. In short, the home has everything one wants for a great vacation. Thank you.
Taos, New Mexico, USA
We are located a few minutes walk from the town plaza, home to live music in the summer and art/jewel/souvenir shopping all year round. A few minutes walk to the north takes you to Kit Carson Park and the Taos Community Center (check out their events page: http://tcataos.org/). Many restaurants are within walking distance, as well as Smith's, a full service grocery store. In spite of our central location, you will find Bear House very quiet and with almost a rural feel in our quiet neighborhood, with a fenced yard and a park that bounds our property at the rear.
Other Activities: Taos Ski Valley is known around the world for fantastic skiing and comfortable facilities. In the summer, one can ride the lift for incredibly beautiful hiking or enjoy various musical performances. TSV, one of the last resorts to reserve lifts for skiers only, three years ago began welcoming snowboarders. Contrary to old-timers' fears, snowboarders have easily integrated into the experience. In fact, they bring a youthful liveliness that has been very welcome. Whether you are planning to relax in our comfortable adobe and catch up on your reading or want outdoor adventure,
Bear House will give you a comfortable base. We love to cook so our kitchen is fully equipped with good pans and tools, and a very user friendly layout for one to many cooks. However, a meal at Graham's, Lambert's and Antonio's are musts for our trips here. Very different and very high quality dining.
Ski: While many find Taos Ski Valley to provide ample variety, some like to visit different areas and near Taos are Red River, Angel Fire and the Santa Fe Ski Resort. On a powder day, though, I always recommend TSV. They plow and sand their roads early and often and have many places for intermediate and advanced skiers to enjoy fresh powder.
