About Shawn

We love this little log cabin- A great getaway any time of year!

We love to escape the desert heat with Maxwell (pictured), to A Sweet Pine Cabin as often as we can. We think it is the quintessential mountain cabin and is exactly what we dreamed a cabin should be. We've had a blast decorating and upgrading this vintage 'Maltby' cabin with the help of our professional designer gal-pals... Thank you P&S!!

'Maltby' is the most well-known mid-century architect of Big Bear; during the heyday of the 1940's. In addition to small utterly charming custom residential log cabins, Maltby did many vintage hotels etc. during that period. Just pick-up any of the historical books on Big Bear and you'll be likely see some of his more 'monumental' architecture!.

We chose to maintain many original vintage elements, as it really adds to the charm while maintaining the authenticity of this very 'real' log-cabin.

We also really wanted a place that had plenty of room for pets, as we are BIG animal lovers, small & large, they are definitely members of the family too!

Shawn purchased this cabin in 2004

Why Shawn chose Big Bear

We fell in love with the style and charm of A Sweet Pine Cabin. And the large fenced yard is perfect for our 4-legged family members.

What makes this cabin unique

relax, eat, relax, eat, relax.... go ski, go fish, go boating, then more relaxing, and oh yeah, hiking and baking fresh apple pies/tarts from the apples on the tree in the yard...

Perfect getaway in a quiet, peaceful setting.

  • 5 of 5

My family and I spent the Labor Day long weekend at the Sweet Pine Cabin and we really wished we could have stayed just a little longer! This cozy little cabin is a perfect escape from the hustle-bustle of daily-life. It's quiet and peaceful and surrounded by Pine trees. Its an easy drive to the Lake and great just for walks around the neighborhood. We took our dog with us and the fenced yard was perfect for her to freely explore around the yard. We especially enjoyed the vintage kitchen and appliances. Although small, everything was functional and we were able to cook our meals there without any issues. (We had bought all the required groceries before getting there.) The kids enjoyed the cute loft bedroom - very storybook like and playing croquet in the yard. We played board games on the picnic bench in the backyard and watched movies at night on Netflix that is on both TVs in the house. All in all, it was just what we needed for a quiet family getaway!

Amazingly Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

We recently spent 4 nights at Sweet Pine Cabin, and loved every minute of it, are already planning our next trip and are still dreaming of the smell of the pines. If you are looking for a Big Bear cabin experience, this charming and comfortable cabin is the one. It's not fancy, it's not luxurious, but it's cozy, comfortable, and had everything we needed. The fenced yard was such a treat for our German Shepherd and Siberian Husky, who didn't want to leave! The location was close to what we wanted to see and do, although we spent most of our time just hanging out at the picnic table and on the fabulous front porch. Nice amenities, from the soap basket to the variety of electronics - although we were too busy enjoying nature to use the TV, movies or video games. Kitchen had almost everything you could need or want, and the retro appliances cool and worked perfectly. This was a perfect place to disconnect from our phones and computers and just relax. And the fact that Sweet Pine is accepting of dogs that weigh more than 25 lbs is a big bonus and just one reason we'll definitely be back! I really don't know who enjoyed the trip more, us or the dogs!

Great cabin

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was great, very cozy and well stocked. The yard is great if you have dogs. The location is in a residential area but it was still very quiet and felt like a getaway. The owner was very prompt with info and our deposit was refunded the day after we checked out.

Definitely recommend.

Wonderful cozy cabin

  • 5 of 5

My friend and I desperately needed a girls get away weekend. My friend has dogs that she wanted to bring along, and so I chose this lovely cabin. My friend and I loved every detail of this cabin from the original 40s stove and refrigerator, to all the lovely period decor on the walls. There were wonderful staple supplies in the kitchen and all types of bakeware and cookware available as well! It was definitely a home away from home and extremely comfortable. The large fenced yard was wonderful for my friends dogs and I have never seen them so ready for bed at the end of the day. The cabin was the perfect peaceful, quiet place for us to be able to refuel our spirits! We are already planning our next trip to Sweet Pine cabin and the following one after that! Thank you so much!!!!

The bathroom is a bit narrow (fits perfectly with the 1940s style of the cabin) so I would not recommend this cabin to anyone who is on crutches or in a wheel chair as it would be difficult to navigate it.

Shawn was very responsive and great about sending me all of the information that we needed! I also received an extremely quick refund for the damage deposit.

Great place

  • 5 of 5

The cabin is so much better than the pictures let on. It is very comfortable: spacious, cute, plenty of land, very well stocked kitchen, and the owners are great. The pictures make the cabin look much smaller than it actually is. We decided to sneak up to Big Bear with a few friends to brave the lack of snow. We were happily surprised by how much was available in the cabin. We decided it would be better to cook in and were very pleasantly surprised by how much was available for us to use. Also, it is well stocked with both games and movies. Shawn, the owner, is very quick to respond and great to work with. The place is far enough out of town that we didn't have to deal with many other tourists, but close enough that we were able to hit the mountain or get into town to grab Starbucks before the caffeine headache hit in the morning. We would definitely stay there again.
