I always wanted a cottage in the area as I went to Graduate School in Keene, NH nearby. I have family and friends who also live in the area. It has been place to visit with friends and family nearby.
Patricia Panella purchased this house in 2006
I love gardening and this house is has all the pluses I need to relax and enjoy the area.
3.5 miles from Brattleboro and shopping. Quiet with a stream nearby. Nestled in from the main road. Lots of outdoor space. Lovely Trees.
I urge you to read this entire review before renting with Patricia Panella. The situation we found ourselves in could've happened to anyone. I wish we had known that even when a property owner breaches the renters' trust and acts dishonestly, the renter can end up with little or no recourse. Here's what happened:
We chose this rental for our Vermont winter getaway. Like most people, a fireplace was something we considered very important to complete the "cozy cottage" ambiance of our vacation.
Well, the place certainly was cozy alright. As in a cramped kitchen right when you walk in, with little counter space (no wonder she didn't include a pic of it!). Also, the heating system is temperamental and unevenly distributed between rooms. Even before the first evening fell and we were ready to try the fireplace out, we had concluded that this rental was very overpriced. We didn't have long to wait for our disappointment to get much worse.
After contacting Patrica to ask how to operate the fireplace, she answers "My fireplace is not working. Sorry."
Suddenly we found ourselves in a small, drab house with hardly any other redeeming features. Worse, the owner knew about the fireplace and didn't tell us ahead of time. Do you think she contacted us after this to send someone over to fix the fireplace? Nope, not another peep from her. Call me crazy, but if your fireplace is broken, the right thing to do would've been to #1. inform your renters of this, and #2. Give them the option of a reduced rental rate or option to cancel. It's a vacation rental, people aren't looking for a house's main amenities to be out of service!
It got worse. I found toenails on the carpet in the bedroom I was staying in-- gross!! I guess the cleaning service she said she was sending in prior to our arrival must've missed those!
I appealed to the owner directly for some kind of partial refund. She refunded $100, with no apology but rather a comment that "it happened just before" our arrival. Funny, when I spoke with her 3 days before our arrival, she said no one would be staying at the cottage before us. So when did the fireplace really break? Dishonesty on top of dishonesty-- $100 won't fix that!
FYI: I asked HomeAway for help but got nowhere. Though their guarantee covers significant misrepresentation, my case didn't qualify. We just fell through the cracks.
Do yourself a favor-- save yourself from an overpriced house with a deceitful owner and steer clear of this one!
A cozy and charming house that was big enough for us and our 2 kids and even had room for my in-laws to spend one night with us. All the amenities and a great book collection!
