About Bill Shields

We are Floridians and Georgians that fell in love with the serenity of the mountains and Lake Nantahala - its an undiscovered gem - beautiful and peaceful.

Bill Shields purchased this house in 2003

Why Bill Shields chose Lake Nantahala

The location is unique, high elevation , clear clean lake, national forests surrounds half the lake, not a lot of boat traffic, close to whitewater rafting and hiking areas. There are very few pest bugs at this elevation. It is always 10 degrees cooler than Atlanta!

What makes this house unique

Lakefront with private boat dock. Use of canoe.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We wanted a place to connect and chill together as a family, the house was clean and comfortable. Loved the views - great time

5-star location, 3-star house, 1-star hospitality

  • 3 of 5

5-star Location

The location is remote and beautiful. Gorgeous mountains cascading down into a beautiful lake. It takes a lovely long and winding mountain road to get to the house. The lake is massive, incredibly fun, and has a marina (Lake's End) that will rent boats and has a delicious restaurant. The only downside (or upside, depending on your perspective) is that there is no cell service in the area for many miles.

3-star house

The house is very attractive. There are 3 adult bedrooms and 1 bunk room with 5 twin beds. The TV room and dining area are comfortable and have a great view of the lake. There are many downsides, though. The driveway is steep on both sides and there's not much room for parking. The house sits high above the lake and there are 74 steps down to the lake (you will have burning thighs after each trip up to the house). The kitchen was not well-outfitted. In particular, there were all of 3 wine glasses, the knives were so dull they were unusable and the refrigerator was falling apart. There is a semi-finished basement but it has really old furniture and a cement floor so it is not a space where anyone wanted to spend time. There were ants all over the kitchen and bathrooms, notes from previous renters about the ants, and the owner was defensive about the problem when contacted. The HVAC was not working properly and we had to do some maintenance on it and, again, the owner did not seem concerned. There is no garbage service and we had to place our garbage bags on the downstair balcony in cans which made the balcony smelly, useless and kind of gross as we walked by it to and from the dock.

2-star Hospitality

The owner advertises that the house has internet and wi-fi but what he does not say is that it is available by satellite only for a fee of $10 per MB. We spent the entire week trying to conserve our usage because we were so afraid of the fees. The house is not supplied well (one towel per person, very little toilet paper or other basics) and the nearest grocery is 30 minutes away. The dryer takes ages to work. The garbage situation was exacerbated by the fact that, apparently, the owner expected us to haul our garbage to the dump and sent us an annoyed message after we left that the cleaning people had to haul our garbage and then he charged us a $35 hauling fee.

The owner is offering a luxury house but treating guests like budget travelers.

Owner's Response: Here is how the conversation actually went: Hi, HVAC I found the box I think you were talking about and I shook it as asked. It seemed to be working well for a while but now there is more water on the floor and the yellow light in lit on the box. ANTS There are so many ants here. It is a huge problem. The kitchen and bathrooms all have steady streams of them. SUPPLIES I don't know how long it's been since you've been to the house but the supplies are rather low. There's almost no toilet paper here (we bought some). There's just one old dish towel. The knives are not useful they are so dull. The sponges are very old. There is a limited amount of kitchen cleaning supplies. There are just three small wine glasses. Aug 2 to Chele Thank you for the update. I do have some ant and bug spray under the kitchen sink. The home is sprayed quarterly and was done in June. The lease states: Supplies: "Bed linens, limited 15 bath towels, starter bath tissue and bath soap are provided. We suggest you bring extra towels and lake towels for water activities. House is furnished and has dishes, silverware, glassware, pots and pans. You will need to bring additional garbage bags, laundry detergent, dishwasher soap, coffee filters, paper towels etc." We do try to be a little more accommodating with a stocked spice rack, coffee filters, sugar and dish soap. I will address the sponges. My housekeepers should have provided you a new one. We have plenty in the owner's closet. The house has been rented all summer, so I have not been there to check glass or utensil inventory since June. Thanks again and enjoy the rest of your stay. Bill Here is the email that I sent her after she returned home,. Does this sound "irritated"? to me Hi Bill, Can you let me know what our final satellite bill was and when I can expect the deposit return? Thanks! Aug 10 to Chele Per the lease: Security Deposit: Security deposit is refundable if all conditions of lease are met. Refunds will be mailed about 1-2 weeks after checkout. You used 9600 MB of data and paid for 2500, so the balance due is $71. The cleaning crew charged an extra $35 for excess trash disposal. He had to fill a pick up truck with trash to take to the dump. Here is an excerpt from their e-mail: "we cleaned the house on saturday.we had a truck load of trash so be sure to charge them $ 35.00 out of their deposit because that is what i am charging " We are always compassionate and responsive to our guests needs

Driftwood Cove Vacation

  • 3 of 5

We did enjoy our vacation to the mountains.

However we were disappointed in the vacation home. There were many things in the home that were damaged or broken upon arrival. We were to notify the owner and he had a way of justifying everything reported. I would have expected things that were broken or damaged to have been replaced or fixed properly. I thought that we paid for more than what we actually got.

The house was listed with a paddle boat which was not there. The pictures of the listing also had a rope swing described conviently located right across the cove which was no longer there as well. The kids were very excited about and expecting these items which were not available. While these things may be unavoidable, the listing should be updated to reflect the changes.

The road into the home was a very narrow one lane gravel road with two way traffic which was a little tricky at times.

We did catch a few fish and got to enjoy swimming off the dock. The lake and mountain view was great. Despite the flaws it as a nice time spent with family.

Owner's Response: I have not had a paddle boat in two years. This guest was clearly disappointed that there was not a paddle boat on property. I had removed any mention of the paddle boat in the property description two years ago, but I did not uncheck the check box in house amenities. She is the first one to catch this error. I do have a Scanoe (flat bottom canoe that is more stable). As far as the items in disrepair, she was so upset about the paddle boat, that she found any flaw she could with the house and choose to write a review about them. She even says the roads are too narrow in the community. This is a rural mountain community and the roads are generally used one way but can be used both ways. They are just fine. She also complained about the rope swing across from the house not being there. This is located on the national forest side of the lake and I have no control over whether a rope swing is no longer usable. The tree must have fallen down recently because my kids used it in early June. There are several other rope swings around the lake. I was just up there this past weekend and did replace a ceiling fan that only worked on low speed, a coffee maker (that she said leaked and didn't when I used it 3 times), fixed a vegetable drawer in the refrigerator that a recent guest must have broke, and tightened the screw on the porch door handle that she said came loose. We have a partial finished basement that is not mentioned in our description but she complained about that as well.

Where the stars shine brighter!

We love this place! But getting there was a joy in itself.

Driving down Waterfall Byway of North Carolina you can hike to a wonderful array of waterfalls along its winding route. In autumn, the beautiful foliage lined the road embracing you in vibrant colors as you curved around every corner. As you turn into Wayah Rd. from Franklin to Nantahala, you begin at the foothills of the Smokies. Farm houses and church sit quietly below the towering peaks around them welcoming your eyes as you drive by. You'll be deep in the beautiful Nantahala Mountain before you know it, and make sure you check out Wayah Bald along the way.

Upon arriving, the house was a welcoming site. Ample parking spaces for 4+ cars. The gorgeous view of the lake in autumn will take your breath away immediately when you open the front door. You'll be greeted with the warm evening light from the setting sun over the peaks across the lake. We didn't even unpack. We took off immediately to the back deck to take sight in. There is a canoe and paddle boat below at the dock waiting patient for you to take them to the water. There was always a delightful breeze gently blowing across the valley. It was a perfect autumn evening.

The house had everything we needed and more. You may think they don't have it until you find it in one of the many cabinets or closets there. There is a gas furnace there for heating and the fireplace is ready if you prefer that too. Plenty of clean towels and sheets if you need them. The washer and dryer are on the lower floor along with ping pong tables and couches for you hang out. Both floor have decks looking out to the lake.

The lake receded somewhat when we were there as it was autumn. The dock ran into ground as it was tied down. However, it was easy to get the canoe into the water. There may be at the most one two boat in the lake at the time when we paddle out. Most of the time it feels like the lake was all yours.

I will say no more. You'll love this place if you appreciate nature and its quietness. When I looked for a vacation rental, I though it was either the lake or the mountain. But my Fiancee wanted both and she got it! We stayed Oct 26th through the 29th.

Great Lake House with Great Views

  • 5 of 5

We had an unforgettable vacation staying in this great lake house!! The view is unbelievable in the fall, especially in the morning when the sunshine falls on the mountain and brightens the colors and fogs. Drive way is one of the easiest from all our past experience, and very convenient to Smoky Mountain area or you can just enjoy the beautiful lake. Kids love to have their own bedroom, they had a lot of fun! The owner is very nice, has many notes inside the house to help find things. We had a late call to the owner due to a battery issue but he helped a lot without any complaints. Thanks very much for renting your beautiful house to us! We'd love to be back!

Awesome retreat, Secluded

  • 5 of 5

This vacation rental is awesome. It is a hidden gem up in the mountains on a super quiet lake. We rented a pontoon boat for the Fathers Day weekend and I was a little leary on how crowded it would be-well the most we saw the whole weekend at one time was six motorcraft on the water. The water is very peaceful and calm. The house is decorated very nicely and there were lots of stocked necessities. It is a distance to a store so stock up on supplies before getting in as once you are in you will never want to leave.Kids and spouses did whitewater rafting and zip lining and had a ball. The girls did a jeep tour that showed some beautiful country and the first place he went to was Lake Nantahala! Only one complaint was one too soft, dip in the middle mattress. Had a new grill delivered while there which was really nice. On the grill- its NOT gas. As a extended family vacation group we seldom repeat our location but this is one place we would return to.
