About Callie Wellendorf

Our journey to the breathtaking mountains of the Carolina's began over a decade ago, and it is a dream come true. It was time to get away from the cold and fast pace of the Mid-West and create our year round Timber Frame home. We live in RiverDance full-time and are looking forward to having you as our guest. The idea from the start was to share RiverDance with others who want to venture out and explore all that Western North Carolina has to offer.

Callie Wellendorf purchased this house in 2006

Mountain Vacation with At-Home Feel

  • 5 of 5

I was looking for a vacation rental from which my son and I could explore the Smoky Mountains. Because he's autistic, it was important to find a home where he would be comfortable. Within 10 minutes of our arrival, he was sprawled on the couch like he'd lived there his whole life.

If you seek a party pad with a lot of nightlife, this ain't it.

But if you seek a peaceful mountain home from which to base your adventures and feel as if you're part owner, you owe it to yourself and your companions to investigate RiverDance.

Mountain views from nearly every window, a cliff-top view of the river far below, privacy when you want it and a family atmosphere when you don't. Funny thing about the river - while RiverDance is perched 300ft. above, the canyon's shape carries the sound of rippling water through your window.

Weather was too chilly for us to enjoy the deck and Carolina Porch (early April), but both are extremely inviting and I'm sure much time could be spent there from late spring into late fall.

While Bear River Lodge is considered a residential development, on the 1/2-mile-long drive up the mountain you only pass a few other homes.

I heartily recommend this vacation rental to:

1. Those who wish to explore backcountry adventures like hiking, paddling, fishing, bicycling, sight-seeing, etc. We hiked on the Appalachian Trail, visited Smoky Mtns. National Park, climbed Mt. Mitchell, NC (highest peak east of the Mississippi) and Clingman's Dome (2nd highest peak).

2. Couples/Families who wish to divide and conquer - one element into the woods/streams/mountains to play, while the other hunts for antiques or enjoys the cultural diversity of Asheville, just 30 minutes away.

3. Those who take a vacation for relaxation. A lot of books could be read on/near the porch/deck/fireplace, etc.

RiverDance is not a vacation rental slapped together as an investment opportunity. This is a beautiful, well-designed home built for the long haul by a wonderful couple who enjoy sharing their home with those who cherish mountain life as much as they do.

We will return and I've already recommended a stay at RiverDance to several close friends and family members.

BTW - I've rented vacation homes in three other locales throughout the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Hand's down, RiverDance was the most enjoyable and most memorable.

Happy Trails!

Owner's Response: We thoroughly enjoyed having Dennis and Tucker stay with us. RiverDance is very adaptable, whether you want one, two or three bedrooms. Whether you would like us to act as your on-site concierge to help connect you with all the activities our little piece of the mountains provides. We are handicapped accessible and offer either a completely private vacation experience or, if you desire, interractions with other guests, the owners and the house puppy.

We didn't want to leave!!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I recently spent a quick overnight trip at River Dance Bed and breakfast. We stayed in the ground floor suite and it was beautiful, private and so cozy. We had a separate entrance into our suite that included a bedroom with a very comfortable Queen sized bed, a spacious bathroom with radiant floor heating and a large sitting room with a kitchenette and cozy furniture. A basket of snacks to enjoy while watching TV was a nice touch and guests have access to a refrigerator full of cold drinks. The views are magnificent, the home is immaculate and looks brand new. The owners Callie, Dave, and Marley their dog, could not be nicer. They served us a delicious breakfast with plenty of coffee, offered advice for outings and made us feel as if we were visiting friends rather than staying at a hotel. We had plenty of privacy and yet wonderful hospitality when sought. We enjoyed hiking to Max Patch on the Appalachian Trail where we had a panoramic view of the gorgeous mountains. Our only complaint is that we could only stay for one night. We'll be back!!

Cozy place to stay with friends or family!

  • 5 of 5

My friend Natalie and I came to stay at RiverDance for a couple of days and really enjoyed the service and the view. The hosts greeted us warmly and provided us with recommendations on places to visit while in Asheville. We had the top suite upstairs, and loved how we were able to have our own privacy. The suite was spacious and the rooms were very cozy. The hot tub was my favorite. It had a stunning view and overlooked the mountains. I liked the breakfast was always at the same time everyday, and Callie provided lots of options. The hosts always checked up on how we were doing and made sure we had everything we needed / wanted. I really enjoyed staying here and would definitely come again!

BEAUTIFUL AND QUIET

  • 5 of 5

very attentive and accommodating to our needs. The setting is in the mountains of North Carolina and we had a great view from our spacious suite and we were lulled to sleep by the soothing sounds of the Laurel River flowing below in the gorge. We particular enjoyed the continental breakfast of assorted fruits, yogurts and breads. For early coffee all we had to do was switch on the pot. Callie also provide an early breakfast on the morning we had to leave early to make our rafting trip.

There are ample provisions in the suite and kitchen if one desires to prepare meals.

This visit to RiverDance was one of our best travel stops. We hope to go back.

Beauty and Hospitality at Riverdance

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we arrived we fell in love with the beauty and hospitality of Riverdance. The owners, Callie and Dave, were exceptional hosts and made us feel at home from the first hello. The beauty of this timber frame home with vaulted ceilings, huge windows for natural light and views of the mountains, and a wraparound porch was beyond our expectations. Breathtaking describes it well.

The home was clean and beautifully decorated. The beds were comfortable and meticulous detail was given to all aspects of the accommodations. We have rarely felt so relaxed. We were greeted each morning with the smell of fresh brewed coffee and a nutritious breakfast to get the day started. It was fun to eat breakfast in the common area and socialize with our hosts and their wonderfully gentle dog Marley. Even our 1 year and 3 year old granddaughters fell in love with Marley.

Our family was in Hot Springs for our son’s wedding and we were busy with wedding activities, but we made time to trail hike, visit Hot Springs, and eat at several local restaurants that our hosts suggested. The steaks and fresh fish at the Iron Horse Inn were delicious.

During our stay at Riverdance we especially loved the quietness of the evening, the calming sound of the river and the brilliant night sky as we spent family time on the porch or relaxing in the hot tub. We hated to leave and hope to return again. Maybe next time in the fall to enjoy the colors of the autumn leaves on the mountain.

If you have the opportunity to visit Hot Springs stay at Riverdance. You will not be disappointed.

Incredible property and fabulous new friends!

  • 5 of 5

Clean, modern and majestic. Callie and Dave have a wonderful place to sit on a mountain top and watch the deep valley below and that nature has to offer.

Linda and I are coming back for sure and probable with another couple to take this all in again.

Callie and Dave are warm and accommodating people with your comfort at the top of the list.

Thank you so much!
