House on ocean with 4 Bedrooms & 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 8)
About Sallie Strong
My grandparents purchased a summer house on Deer Isle in the early 1900's...and our family has been returning to the island ever since. I was able to purchase 'The Stronghold' in 1999 and, after three years of renovation (inside and out), I'm proud of the final result! I currently reside in California and spend summers in Maine. When in Maine I sometimes stay in the renovated "barn" which is attached to the large house. I attempt to give as much privacy as possible to the guests while they're staying in the house. I find this works well for most - I'm available to welcome guests and to help with questions about the area, things to do and directions to places.

Why Sallie Strong chose Stonington
This is a magical spot...the location and views are unsurpassed. The village offers restaurants and entertainment and the house is comfortable yet spacious with ever-changing views.
What makes this House unique
This spot is a haven for relaxation, interspection, exploration and fun. The sky meets the water, meets the islands and the harbor and...meets my house. The enchanting and ever-changing views cannot be matched anywhere.

Wonderful Stonington House
Gorgeous view...Very well kept...Beautifully and artistically decorated...
My extended family had a wonderful time at Stronghold. The home is very well appointed, and there is space for everyone to spread out and relax. We had such a wonderful time here, and would definitely go back. Highly recommend!
What a hidden gem, a great place, great views, good access and relaxing
We had a wonderful trip and would 100% recommend it to anyone else. There were 7 of us in our party, so we had ample space for everyone. The facilities were excellent, providing us with kayaks and canoes enabling us to putter around, fish and have a kayak tour around this islands. Even for us foodies the kitchen was well equipped. We had lovely stay and enjoyed Stonington, the beach (which was lovely) and the surrounding area. We spent a day at Acadia National Park. Walking up the Precipice cliff, ascend granite stairs, ladders, and iron rungs as you make your make up the sheer cliff. Stunning views at the top of Champlain Mountain. Descend down the North Ridge Trail of Champlain Mountain along a granite ridgeline.
We enjoyed taking to Sallie the owner, who lives on the side of the property. Which is very good for know where to go and what to buy. We were a frequent visitor at the lobster pound.
A truly lovely, relaxing stay.
Phil & his family took advantage of the adventures available on Deer Isle as well as Acadia Park. They were a very energetic crew and found many activities to keep them busy. They seemed to enjoy hanging out in the house and yard as well as exploring the town. What a great group!
Perfect House. Perfect Location.
Stonington is a working lobstering harbor that has kept its rural, New England charm. Simply put, Stonington and this authentic Maine home were absolutely charming. The house is meticulously decorated, well-equipped and maintained, and has picture perfect views of the harbor right from the backyard waterfront. We were fortunate enough to meet the owner, Sallie, during our stay. She is one of the nicest people you will ever meet, a most gracious host, and had a wealth of knowledge of the area and things to do. If you are looking for a quiet coastal Maine vacation spot away from the throngs of tourists, Stonington is the place to go and this home is definitely the place to stay.
Exceeded our expectations and we will be back next Summer!
Many lovely rooms with great views! We never used the living room next to the dining area. Maybe you could convert that to another bedroom?
A welcoming and warm cottage!
We loved staying at the Stronghold! The island is charming and gorgeous. The best coffee of my life and gorgeous views everywhere you go! The owner is very close by and knows all the secrets and activities the island has to offer. We had 3 little kids, 2 teenagers and 2 adults in our crew and everyone was happy! The house is well equipped for entertaining at home and the perfect location for outdoor dinners. It's also nestled right in town, walking distance to the ferry, coffee, ice cream and restaurants. And the owner was warm and very accommodating. A wonderful classic Maine vacation home!
Most beautiful spot on the island!
This was a fabulous home for our vacation. The location was perfect and the views were unsurpassed. We enjoyed sitting on the master bedroom balcony each morning and each evening, watching the boats. There is outdoor seating all over the house, not just off the master bedroom. There is even a sunroom so you can enjoy the view even if it rains. The house was large enough for our family of 5, including 3 adult children. The additional apartment was cleverly designed so it could either be a completely closed off private apartment, with its own entrance and deck, or it can kept open and act as a bedroom that flows with the rest of the house. We were worried that one of our kids would be isolated, but it worked out well. The house included everything from cooking supplies to towels to games. My husband and I are kayakers, so we were especially excited when the owner let us use her kayaks and canoe.
Stonington was a perfect little town. It was peaceful with just enough vacation-y things to do, mostly within walking distance. We walked to the area restaurants (Fisherman's Friend was our favorite) and to the local shops, and made quite a few trips to 44 North coffee shop, which we loved so much, we are now ordering the coffee online. If you have to drive anywhere, it is always scenic and pleasurable. We drove out to Bar Harbor one day, about an hour drive, and not only was it a great day trip, the drive there and back was beautiful.
There were just a few cons, and these are pretty minor compared to all the pros: First, the owner lived on the premises, which was kind of awkward. Sallie is super sweet and was always very helpful, but it was hard not to feel self-conscious. Neighbors and guests and their children often roamed around the property. The windows were always open (for air) and the yard is small, so we felt pretty exposed at times. The third con is that all the indoor chairs were uncomfortable and the master bedroom bed had springs poking through. Also, both the owner and the neighbor had dogs that ran through the backyard. And although we do like pets, we signed a "no pets on premises" lease, so I didn't expect to see dogs squatting down in the garden. The last con is that there was no cell service inside the house and wi-fi was very weak. These are all very minor things but I thought they were worth mentioning.
I would still strongly recommend the Stronghold for a family vacation. It is the most beautiful house and the most perfect spot on the island.
Here's my (very) belated response!
First of all, thank you for your kind words about my property.
I apologize for the "cons" you mentioned and for any inconvenience(s) you experienced during your stay. I wish you had contacted me at that time so we might have been able to work something out. You're right - the internet and cell service on the island are weak. I thought I had mentioned that prior to your visit. The village has announced they're adding a cell tower in the downtown area this summer (2018) which we hope will make service speedier! I often spend time in the attached "barn" which has usually worked well for my guests. I'm able to welcome them and offer information, directions, etc., about the area. I'm sorry this made you uncomfortable. Again, I apologize that your experience wasn't the best it could have been...
Deer Isle abounds in unspoiled, spectacular scenery with incredible hiking trails active with natural wildlife, marine mammals, birds (Eagles and Osprey), and vistas of small pine covered islands dotting the ocean; it is a destination for ocean sailors as well as kayakers; many talented and creative artists work and live here and the
world renowned Haystack School of Art is located here; it's an easy, beautiful drive to Camden, Castine or Bar Harbor.
The house is surrounded by a large, grassy yard suitable for croquet, badminton, horse-shoes or just hanging out in lawn chairs and watching the amazing ships and boats sail by. There's ALWAYS something interesting to see!
