About Will Robinson

We are 6 owners, all brothers and cousins, and live in various parts of the country. This is a family house that we are fortunate enough to have been able to keep within the family since 1920. We are all originally from Louisiana, mostly New Orleans. And you won't have to look at a bunch of recent photos of anyone's kids, but do we have some nice old black and white photos of ancestors from the 20's and 30's and the house as it looked then.

Will Robinson purchased this house in 1920

Why Will Robinson chose Shenandoah Valley

The view from the porch has been called by most of the locals the best view in the county and even the best view of the Shenandoah River anywhere. The pictures, as everyone who stays there agrees, do not do it justice. You have to see in person! It was an old nursery for many years starting in the 1920s and has every known type of boxwood growing on the 20 acres of land, a total of around 175 boxwoods. The house is perched on a plateau , where the bend in the ridge meets the bend in the river, like the bottom of 2 U's coming together..

What makes this house unique

The view first and foremost is what makes this unique, as well the surrounding bucolic historic horse country. It is George Washington's old stomping ground when he was a surveyor in his 20s and many have claimed he "slept here"...wherever he slept, he described this area of the Shenandoah as the most beautiful place on earth. That may be a stretch but it certainly is way up there and one of our favorites.

What a place!

  • 5 of 5

Wow. The Play Garden in early spring: there never was such a sweet place, clad in the fragrance and soft beauty of mid-April in the Blue Ridge and Shenandoah Valley. It was cold when we arrived. No matter. We felt warm and loved. We watched as winter was shed a little more each day, and wild flowers bloomed and trees greened. There was much to do around the neighborhood, and we especially enjoyed several visits to Art at the Mill (Burwell-Morgan Mill in nearby Millwood). Old and new friends joined us during our ten-day stay, and they promptly fell in love with The Play Garden. Who can blame them? We will return.

Marriage Proposal

  • 5 of 5

We spent four days at The Play Garden for the occasion of the surprise proposal and engagement party for our daughter. It was absolutely beautiful!!! Everything turned out perfectly - even the rain stopped right before. The house is AMAZING. We thoroughly enjoyed looking at all the pictures and seeing the family history throughout the rooms. The house is remarkably well stocked with everything you would need and the view is absolutely breathtaking. We will have such great memories of our daughters engagement - such the perfect setting for such a special occasion. We would love to come back to visit when the pool is open and the gardens are in bloom. Thank you again for sharing your beautiful home!!

Relaxing Retreat with Incredible Views

  • 5 of 5

My third visit to the Play Garden did not disappoint. This place has something for everyone. You can spend the day lounging in the pool or just relaxing on the massive veranda overlooking the beautiful Shenandoah River. Those of the group who needed a more active stay, floated and kayaked down the river and hiked part of the historic Appalachian Trail. One of our days we ventured into Washington DC to sight see. It was an easy drive in and we were back with plenty of time to entertain guests with dinner on the porch.

Delightful stay filled with great memories.

A truly special place

  • 5 of 5

Our family spent a week at the Play Garden and it was certainly the best week of a very good summer. The setting is perfect. We so enjoyed the house, the pool, the riverside, Millwood and its friendly denizens. We are definitely considering returning next year. It's a place that you can really feel at home.

The weather during our visit at the Play Garden was perfect. Cool enough at night to open the windows and sleep restfully under a quilt The days were usually sunny and warm but not hot. Such a refreshing difference from DC. And only an hour away.

The owners were all polite, generous and helpful in their dealings with us. What a treasure they possess and what thanks we have for being able to visit it. Here's to hoping the Play Garden is available next year!
