Great home for family reunions

  • 5 of 5

Everything about this rental is first class, from the owners' helpful instructions, to the beautiful accomodations. There is plenty of room in the 4+ bedrooms and baths for everyone to feel comfortable, and the large kitchen made it easy and fun for all of our family to join in with meal preparation.

The area is one of great scenic beauty, and we enjoyed day trips to Hurricane Ridge, the Hoh Rain Forest, Ruby Beach as well as closer trips to Dungeness Spit and Sequim. A day trip to Victoria via the Port Angeles ferry was also enjoyed.

The lodge is so welcoming that you'd be very content with just sitting in front of the fireplace or woodstove with a good book (on those rainy days) or enjoying the deck and backyard.

We were adults-only on this trip, but the loft would be a fun place for older kids to sleep.

Thanks for sharing your home with us!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the positive feed back. It's nice to know that our original vision for the Lodge is being fulfilled by groups visiting the North Olympic Peninsula. We wanted it to be a great home base for day trips to the many local scenic places. Steve

Amazing Gem in Port Angeles, Sequim Area.

  • 5 of 5

This lovely property nestled in a wooded area is impeccable and the perfect vacation retreat. We had a family reunion there and could not be more pleased. Beginning with the outstanding communication and well thought out and organized property with nothing left to chance. Everything is organized, with full instructions to enjoy all aspects of the wood stove, hot tub, grill, fire pit, all we need was our family and some food from Costco. Everything we needed was there and organized with a chart and diagram making it amazingly easy to find.

The setting is spectacular and wheelchair accessible. We simply could not have asked for a better venue. Many family members mentioned they plan to use in the future as a vacation rental. We were extremely pleased. If there were six stars, I would have rated it as such! Outstanding!

Owner's Response: Hi Forest, Thanks for your review. It's always good to hear that our guests appreciate our efforts to build, furnish and maintain this special place "in the woods" that can accommodate large family get-togethers. I enjoy going there once a month to make improvements and keep the place looking new. But I can't do it all myself. We get a lot of help from Lani, our booking manager, and many other local service providers to keep the Lodge clean, functional and beautiful both inside and out. We recently created an LLC with members from the Port Angeles area to help us keep this place going for many years to come. Thanks for being our guest. Steve Kunkel

Olympia Foothills Lodge, A Dream

  • 5 of 5

The Olympic Foothills Lodge is nestled in the woods that when morning came, the soft sunshine filtered through the numerous trees, giving off a dreamy feel. Our stay here was phenomenal and accommodated our large group comfortably. Each and everyone one of my guests were in awe of the beauty, comfort, and luxurious accommodations (it was hard to snag the sauna since it was always filled with people, ha!). The hot tub was just the perfect touch for our exhausted wedding party, enjoying the warmth while secluded from the house. Lani has been a phenomenal communicator, constantly in communication with me before and after our stay and ensured all of our needs were met. The kitchen is stunning, well stocked with plates, cups, bowls, griddle, extra refrigerator space!, and more. I highly, highly recommend staying here for the perfect get away with family and friends. Thank you to Steve, Alice and Lani for hosting us and making this whole wedding experience even more wonderful!

Owner's Response: Nichole (Pono), we are so pleased that the Lodge and its amenities suited your needs so well. It sounds like you had a chance to get the real feel of what the Olympic Foothills Lodge is all about. You were an absolute pleasure to work and communicate with and we thank you for leaving the Lodge in such beautiful condition! In fact we'd even venture to say you left it better than you found it! Thank you for being such wonderful guests and congratulations to you and Loren on your marriage! Lani Booking Manager Olympic Foothills Lodge Hi Nichole, I am always happy to hear that the "Lodge" is giving guests the same experience that we enjoy when we are there. Indeed the setting is amazing. I planned out for floor plan so the views from all the main rooms and bedrooms would be to the forest. Just after you left we spent 4 days building and upgrading more walking trails on the property. We also installed the latest GE induction cooktop. It works even better than the last version. Our vision is to preserve this forest retreat experience for all who come to the Lodge for years to come. Sincerely, Steve Kunkel

fantastic house for a family trip

  • 5 of 5

We stayed with 4 adults and 5 kids at the Foothills lodge for a family trip. The home itself was beautiful and well kept, VERY well stocked kitchen. also -Firewood for the fire pit, frisbees for the kids to play with. Plenty of room in the house for everyone. I have stayed in a number of rental homes, but none with the attention to detail (and labeling!) of this one. We enjoyed the hot tub and the trail in the woods as well. Location is convenient to Port Angeles and the park. I would highly recommend.

Owner's Response: Thanks for taking the time to tell us about your stay. It's always good to hear that the time and effort we have put into making the Lodge a special place is appreciated. I, too, have rented a few homes and condos and have sometimes thought the place could be better if they only had a ........fill in the blank. So I take notes and have used some of those experiences to keep improving our Lodge. I hope you can find time to come again, sometime. Steve

About Steve Kunkel

I've been building and remodeling houses since 1975. I've lived in Washington since I was born and really like Northwest Forests. As a youth I played Cello in the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra so I've always loved classical music. I have been married to Alice since 1979. We have two daughters and 4 grandchildren. I come up to the Lodge once a month to both relax and also to keep everything in good working order.

Steve Kunkel purchased this house in 2006

Why Steve Kunkel chose Port Angeles

I've always wanted to build a cabin in the woods, so we chose a large lot with a lush green forest here in the Northwest. We also wanted a property with a stream running through it located where no highway noise can be heard. It's like having our own little National Park. Property near the ocean would have been nice but I preferred the forest because the forest is rejuvenating for me. From the reviews we have received, I think it is for others as well.

What makes this house unique

After much consideration it was decided that our Lodge would NOT have a TV. We have cell phone service and a wireless internet for people to stay connected with the world beyond the Lodge. The TV seemed to be the biggest interference for people to connect with each other when at the Lodge so we decided to go without. I think this one feature has contributed the most to the positive and rejuvenating atmosphere at the Lodge. We have games, puzzles, a piano, an outdoor fire pit, badmitten net and a trail through the woods..all activities that people enjoy doing with each other.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Better than expected! This was a great place for several families to get together. Kid friendly and lots of amenities for kids. We had a great time! Thank you again for your communication and wonderful place. It's even better than the description! It would be nice if there was another queen bed, but it wasn't a big deal and we figured it out! Loved the hot tub and sauna. Also the labeling and attention to detail was completely awesome. Take care! We plan to come back next year for our winter retreat. We want to stay longer next time!
