About Steve Kunkel

I've been building and remodeling houses since 1975. I've lived in Washington since I was born and really like Northwest Forests. As a youth I played Cello in the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra so I've always loved classical music. I have been married to Alice since 1979. We have two daughters and 4 grandchildren. I come up to the Lodge once a month to both relax and also to keep everything in good working order.

Steve Kunkel purchased this house in 2006

Why Steve Kunkel chose Olympic Peninsula

I've always wanted to build a cabin in the woods, so we chose a large lot with a lush green forest here in the Northwest. We also wanted a property with a stream running through it located where no highway noise can be heard. It's like having our own little National Park. Property near the ocean would have been nice but I preferred the forest because the forest is rejuvenating for me. From the reviews we have received, I think it is for others as well.

What makes this house unique

After much consideration it was decided that our Lodge would NOT have a TV. We have cell phone service and a wireless internet for people to stay connected with the world beyond the Lodge. The TV seemed to be the biggest interference for people to connect with each other when at the Lodge so we decided to go without. I think this one feature has contributed the most to the positive and rejuvenating atmosphere at the Lodge. We have games, puzzles, a piano, an outdoor fire pit, badmitten net and a trail through the woods..all activities that people enjoy doing with each other.

Great home for family reunions

  • 5 of 5

Everything about this rental is first class, from the owners' helpful instructions, to the beautiful accomodations. There is plenty of room in the 4+ bedrooms and baths for everyone to feel comfortable, and the large kitchen made it easy and fun for all of our family to join in with meal preparation.

The area is one of great scenic beauty, and we enjoyed day trips to Hurricane Ridge, the Hoh Rain Forest, Ruby Beach as well as closer trips to Dungeness Spit and Sequim. A day trip to Victoria via the Port Angeles ferry was also enjoyed.

The lodge is so welcoming that you'd be very content with just sitting in front of the fireplace or woodstove with a good book (on those rainy days) or enjoying the deck and backyard.

We were adults-only on this trip, but the loft would be a fun place for older kids to sleep.

Thanks for sharing your home with us!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the positive feed back. It's nice to know that our original vision for the Lodge is being fulfilled by groups visiting the North Olympic Peninsula. We wanted it to be a great home base for day trips to the many local scenic places. Steve

A Great Place. Full Stop.

  • 5 of 5

We came up for our wedding, and we couldn't have asked for a better place to start our journey. We were a group of 14 adults and there was a place for everyone to sleep comfortably, really, really comfortably. We cooked a couple of dinners there and never wanted for an appliance or space to prepare things, this house has it all. And so unbelievably organized, you won't waste a minute looking for things. I was almost reserved in raving too much about how great this place is because I don't want too many people to find out about it that we might not be able to book it in the future. But if you have a large group and want to spend time in a place that is probably more comfortable than your home, this is the place. 10 Stars!

Fantastic accommodation for a group of hikers.

  • 5 of 5

This is the second year a group from our Victoria-based hiking club has stayed at Olympic Foothills Lodge near Port Angeles. For our group of 10 adults it has been ideal. There is plenty of space for everyone to get together, even with extra friends from another house coming for a potluck dinner there was oodles of room. The house is beautifully laid out for large groups or families; with 5 bathrooms, and rooms with different bed arrangements so that everyone could be accommodated in comfort. We love the kitchen! Can you imagine a place where 10 people can be busily eating breakfast and packing up their lunches and not get in a tangle? This kitchen is so well laid out that everything runs smoothly. The attention to detail and expert craftsmanship in this house is a joy to experience - there is nothing tacky or sub-standard here - it's all top-notch and custom made. You can tell the owner just loves this house and devotes a lot of care and attention to it. Dealing with Steve is very easy; he responds to requests super fast and loves to help out with suggestions for hikes, maps, and local information. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this house. We have now booked for a 3rd consecutive year - our group wouldn't think of going anywhere else!

Best Vacation Home Ever!

  • 5 of 5

This is one of the best vacation rentals we have ever stayed at. The lodge is a beautiful home, well-organized, super clean, and most of all very warm and inviting with personal touches from the owners like family pictures. This house is great for large groups. There are plenty of bedrooms with luxurious bedding and modern bathrooms. The large spacious kitchen is beautifully organized with gleaming pots and pans and silverware and a brand new induction stovetop. The owners have thoughtfully provided every amenity you can think of, including emergency flashlights. The home is cozily tucked in amidst the woods and is very private. We were a group of 11, ranging in age from 10 to teenagers to Grandmas and everyone had a great time. We enjoyed sitting around the living room, the dining table, the patio table, and roasting marshmallows at the firepit. Hurricane ridge is close by, with lovely hiking trails. We also visited the Dungeness Pit and the Lavender farms in Sequim. A fabulous getaway!

Owner's Response: Hi Keerti, Thanks for taking the time to give us such a detailed and positive review. We have rented other places as well, so when we decided to rent our place I considered all the little things that annoyed us when we stayed at vacation rental homes and tried to make sure they would not be a problem for our renters. When you are only in a home for three or four days, who wants to spend the first two days figuring out where to find things in the kitchen? The large dining room table was also a must for being able to sit with the whole family at meal times. It's gratifying to know that you enjoyed your stay. Thanks for choosing our place for your getaway. We look forward to hearing from you again sometime. Steve Kunkel

Great family reunion getaway

  • 5 of 5

We had 4 households coming together with older (most out of the house) kids. This place had great space for both privacy and gathering. We loved the fire pit and trail in the backyard. Not only was this a beautiful house, it was ABSOLUTELY SPOTLESS! It is so well maintained, and had everything; coolers to borrow and sticks for marshmallow roasting. It was also a great location to launch out of for daytrips to Olympic park, tidal pools and Victoria. It was an incredible value and the owner was super nice to work with!

Owner's Response: Thanks Jill, What are the odds of having someone from Huntsville, Alabama (where I was in the Army many years ago) stay at our Lodge?! Thanks for coming our way for your vacation. I'm happy to hear the "Lodge" met your expectations. Sounds like you had some fun day trips. Aren't the tide pools amazing? Glad you liked the trails we have made on the property. My goal is to have even more trails so that someday the property will begin to feel like a miniature National Park. Best wishes to all of you for a great summer. Steve
