About Steve Kunkel

I've been building and remodeling houses since 1975. I've lived in Washington since I was born and really like Northwest Forests. As a youth I played Cello in the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra so I've always loved classical music. I have been married to Alice since 1979. We have two daughters and 4 grandchildren. I come up to the Lodge once a month to both relax and also to keep everything in good working order.

Steve Kunkel purchased this house in 2006

Why Steve Kunkel chose Olympic Peninsula

I've always wanted to build a cabin in the woods, so we chose a large lot with a lush green forest here in the Northwest. We also wanted a property with a stream running through it located where no highway noise can be heard. It's like having our own little National Park. Property near the ocean would have been nice but I preferred the forest because the forest is rejuvenating for me. From the reviews we have received, I think it is for others as well.

What makes this house unique

After much consideration it was decided that our Lodge would NOT have a TV. We have cell phone service and a wireless internet for people to stay connected with the world beyond the Lodge. The TV seemed to be the biggest interference for people to connect with each other when at the Lodge so we decided to go without. I think this one feature has contributed the most to the positive and rejuvenating atmosphere at the Lodge. We have games, puzzles, a piano, an outdoor fire pit, badmitten net and a trail through the woods..all activities that people enjoy doing with each other.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Better than expected! This was a great place for several families to get together. Kid friendly and lots of amenities for kids. We had a great time! Thank you again for your communication and wonderful place. It's even better than the description! It would be nice if there was another queen bed, but it wasn't a big deal and we figured it out! Loved the hot tub and sauna. Also the labeling and attention to detail was completely awesome. Take care! We plan to come back next year for our winter retreat. We want to stay longer next time!

Great home for family reunions

  • 5 of 5

Everything about this rental is first class, from the owners' helpful instructions, to the beautiful accomodations. There is plenty of room in the 4+ bedrooms and baths for everyone to feel comfortable, and the large kitchen made it easy and fun for all of our family to join in with meal preparation.

The area is one of great scenic beauty, and we enjoyed day trips to Hurricane Ridge, the Hoh Rain Forest, Ruby Beach as well as closer trips to Dungeness Spit and Sequim. A day trip to Victoria via the Port Angeles ferry was also enjoyed.

The lodge is so welcoming that you'd be very content with just sitting in front of the fireplace or woodstove with a good book (on those rainy days) or enjoying the deck and backyard.

We were adults-only on this trip, but the loft would be a fun place for older kids to sleep.

Thanks for sharing your home with us!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the positive feed back. It's nice to know that our original vision for the Lodge is being fulfilled by groups visiting the North Olympic Peninsula. We wanted it to be a great home base for day trips to the many local scenic places. Steve

Beautiful home and property!

  • 5 of 5

My family stayed at this home for a "family reunion/80th Birthday" celebration. The home went above and beyond our expectations. It was much larger than we had hoped for with room for everyone to be comfortable. The kitchen was perfect with lots of room for all the cooks to be in there having fun. We even hired a professional piano player to entertain during the birthday party. There is an indoor sauna which was enjoyed. I could go on and on about this wonderful home. It is the perfect group gathering place and sure to bring great memories for your family and friends. Everything was so professionally handled too and it was spotless when we arrived. Thank you for sharing your beautiful spot!!

The place is to match Olympic NP experience

  • 5 of 5

When you plan to visit something at the level of a National Park you would really want to find a place to stay that would be on par. And this lodge goes perfectly with the Olympic National Park - quiet, cozy, wild life around, all the amenities, nice backyard to play with kids: volleyball, badminton, even family style American football.

We were 4 families - 8 adults and 6 kids.

Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

Our PERFECT vacation began the second we glimpsed this beautiful home. Our extended family of 15, ages 2-55, converged upon this fantastic getaway in early June. Traveling from Texas, we put our faith in Olympic Foothills Lodge when we booked online, we were not disappointed. The location was PERFECT. Our daily excursions included-Hurrican Ridge, Ruby Beach, Hoh rainforest, Forks and Flattery Bay. Each evening, the kids played badminton, hiked around the property or soaked in the hot tub while we prepared our evening meal in the PERFECTly supplied kitchen (the grocery store was only a 15-minute drive away). After we ate, we either went out by the fire, played board games (the collection is very nice), listened to my nephew play the piano, or sat in the sauna for a bit. Before going to bed, we were able to wash a load of clothes to be ready for the next day. I also need to mention that the "baby gear" at the house, from step stools to booster chairs was a blessing. It is quite obvious that Steve and Alice have poured their hearts and souls into this home. The attention to detail is amazing- from the quality bedding to the beautiful furniture. You will want for absolutely nothing during your stay here. Actually, you will want for something--just a few more days in paradise! Thank you for being a part of our unforgettable family vacation.

Very well thought out vacation rental

  • 5 of 5

Wow. This place is well set up. The entire set up of this home is well layed out. The rooms are large and well appointed. Everything is labeled, down to the individual items in the kitchen. The Hotub is large, and set up in a lovely wooded spot a very short walk from the door. The Sauna is the best I've seen (no joke). The showers / bathrooms are well spaces and placed. There is PLENTY (HUGE) amount of space through out the home. We had almost max (15 adults) and felt no crowding. The yard has a fire pit. We enjoyed stoking the fire and playing games all night and day. I'm arranging a gathering here again in the future for sure. Oh and the owner / operator was super responsive and professional. My guest list was going to change some before the date of arrival and they were very accommodating and answered questions.

Two notes for owner: Put blinds / Curtains in the great room. More "Privacy" and energy efficiency. It was hard to keep that place warm with all the heat loss from the windows.

Make the Vent in the kitchen more obvious. Put a big message behind the burner with an arrow pointing over to that switch. Most people are used to a conventional hood and we ended up triggering a fire alarm when one well intention but not well thought out person tried to suprise everyone with bacon in our hurry out.

Superlative Family Getaway

  • 5 of 5

I can't say enough good things about the Olympic Foothills Lodge. My far-flung, international family converged on it with our small kids for a week, and we could not have had a better stay. It's beautiful and well-located, to be sure, and the hot tub, sauna, and grill were big hits. But the details were what really put it over the top. Steve was responsive and helpful, and his house is absurdly well-equipped. Every. Single. Thing. you could require when traveling with a family is provided. The beds and linens are exceptional. Towels are abundant. The kitchen is better stocked than my own. There are bins of toys, shelves of books, outdoor equipment, even s'mores supplies and travel recommendations. We had an amazing week here, and if our militaryv postings allowed, would spend every possible vacation at the OFL.
