About Aileen

Avid travelers, we longed for a place to call our escape form the stressors of daily live. Once we saw Costa Rica, we fell in love with its natural beauty. Equally impressive is the locals. Funny, charming, welcoming and most endearing, we have made many good friends we now call family. From the beaches, to the mountains, there is an amazing array of nature to explore, enjoy and remember for a lifetime!

Aileen purchased this house in 2003

Why Aileen chose Puntarenas

Located on the Central Pacific Coast, we are only a one and a half hour drive from Juan Santa Maria International Airport (San Jose Airport-SJO) and only ten minutes south of the bustling town of Jaco. Our cozy cottage is minutes away from several local beaches, restaurants and tour operators. Go ziplining through the rainforest canopy, explore the beaches, and enjoy the comforts of home amid the wild, natural beauty of Costa Rica!

What makes this house unique

Lying in the patio hammock, you can forget the concept of time! Early morning coffee on the front porch with the Scarlet Macaws overhead making their daily journey to the ocean, one can easily shed layers of stress... and your day has just begun!

Fabulous House!

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying in Aileen and Fritz's beautiful and peaceful house! Very nicely located near the little town of Playa Hermosa and Jaco, and we felt very safe with the gates and security system. Don't miss the TacoBar in Jaco for a GREAT and reasonable meal! Jaco beach - only a 10 minute drive from their house - is really only suited for surfing, so be careful in the giant waves. The same is true for Playa Hermosa. Three out of four of us were body-slammed in the huge waves - painful!

This house was fitted with all the necessities: cookware, dishes, very comfortable beds, and I saw more wildlife (including two monkeys - a kinkajou and a squirrel monkey) on their property from the front porch than I saw during the rest of our trip. You have to be up early (5:40-6 am), be patient, and just sit and wait. The monkeys hang out in the palm trees on the border of the front lawn, and the leaves rustle when they are in motion. The owners kindly provide sheets of information on things to do and guides for animal, bird, and reptile id, and maps of the area. They also recommended a car rental company that was very reasonable - not easy to find in CR. We tried to find the waterfall behind their property, but, sadly, couldn't. We found lots of other waterfalls in our week in CR, though.

We enjoyed Manuel Antonio beach a lot, which we drove to from their house on two days. That beach is swimable, gorgeous and the town quaint, nestled in the hillsides above. There is a cool "el Avion" bar there, constructed out of the American military airplane that crashed over Costa Rica and started the Iran-Contra scandal (Reagan, remember?) A bit of history that is fun to visit - the restaurant has great views, too! We would love to come back, and we highly recommend Aileen and Fritz's beautiful house!

Owner's Response: Thank you ever so much for choosing our home to vacation in. We are always delighted to hear of each guest's experience and what wildlife they spied from our front porch or back patio. It is our pleasure to host and provide a cozy stay for our guests! Jaco beach is generally a good place to swim except during high tide. This is true for most of the central pacific coast. Visitors should be mindful of the tides for swimming. Pura Vida!

Beautiful Jungle Property

  • 5 of 5

The Cartlidge's home in Playa Hermosa was perfect for my wife and I's recent visit to Playa Hermosa. It was an oasis in the jungle where the many tropical birds flocked around the house in the morning providing a melodious cacophony of calls. We were lucky to happen upon a flock of 15 - 20 Scarlet Macaws feasting on their Beach Almond trees at Esterillos Oeste about 20 minutes from the house. The restaurants in Jaco and Playa Hermosa were phenomenal. While we were only in Costa Rica for 4 nights and 5 days, we were able to completely disconnect from the US grid and fully relax in paradise.

Private Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Many of our friends go to the all inclusive resorts or book a retreat that is guaranteed to rejuvenate the mind, body and soul. We are of the do-it-yourself variety. Fritz and Aileen's vacation rental included everything we needed AND we're rejuvenated. Every morning we've awakened here has brought it's own delightful suprise--a macaw family came to the big tree one morning so the mother could feed the baby. For several days in a row a bunch of toucans hung out with us on the same trees. We are guarded daily by the iguana at the gate. And right now there's a squirrel in the palm on the side of the house knawing a coconut...he looks very happy!...while I hear the sounds of howler monkeys in the distance. The home is perfectly situated close to Playa Hermosa where we've gone to watch the surfers play on the waves. It's within 10 minutes of Jaco where we spent New Years enjoying the fireworks. In an hours drive south, we got a fantastic massage at San Bada in Manuel Antonio, which was loaded with white-faced monkeys. We've watched the sunset in Manuel Antonio, Hermosa's cliffs and the ever-spectacular Villa Caletas. Down the road from the house we stopped by Vida Asana for a couple yoga sessions. And when I woke up with an unbelivably bad tooth ache, Dr. Jairo Viquez Salas took great care of me and fixed the problem--on a holiday Saturday! We have another day and a half in our favorite holiday community, and we'll enjoy that time as much as we have all the days preceeding.

Aileen and Fritz, thanks for the rental. It's been perfect. I would highly recommend this location and this house.

Owner's Response: We are always ecstatic when our guests enjoy our home and what we believe to be a better experience than the big resorts! The nuances of staying in a vacation rental usually lead to greater adventure and experiences. Sitting on our front porch sipping morning coffee, one can be thoroughly entertained by the exotic birds that will no doubt be on display. The town of Playa Hermosa provides a laid back vibe born of the surfing town it is. It also offers just about anything you would need to ensure a great time...restaurants-some beachfront, 7 miles of beach, some shopping and entertainment that includes live music and zip lining or ATV tours! thank you Michelle for sharing your review and choosing us for your Playa Hermosa vacation destination! Pura Vida!

Coconuts, iguanas, and good times

  • 5 of 5

My travelling partner and I had the great pleasure of staying at Fritz and Aileen's beautiful property in Playa Hermosa for a month and a half. Much of our time was spent on their spacious porch, enjoying the garden and the wildlife it attracted. The house was immaculate, neatly decorated and very comfortable. The bathroom was perfect and the kitchen was well equipped. Couldn't have stayed at a better casa. We also loved the chill surfer vibe Playa Hermosa attracted. It was also a great base for exploring the South Pacific coast. Do ask Fritz and Aileen about their other property, Rancho Tranquilo. We had the immense pleasure of staying there for another month and a half and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It's well worth the trip!! Pura vida.

Perfect Surfing Trip/Honeymoon

  • 5 of 5

The wife and I are avid surfers, that is why we are married! We wanted the best possible surfing we could get at a budget price and Costa Rica proved more than we could have dreamed. This home was beautiful and had more than we could have ever wanted as all we needed was the outdoor shower and chair hammocks. The wireless internet allowed us to keep in contact with family and friends back home, though we didn't use it after the first day except for wave forcasting. The location is perfect for those wanting to surf Playa Hermosa and not deal with the crowds of Jaco. We literally surfed for 5 days straight, all day! This area still has places where you will be the only ones out and the waves are extrodinary. We had 3 perfect days of 5-6ft waves and then a south swell showed up with heights in the 10-12ft range. The beach breaks around the area do tend to closeout at that height but we still went out for our dawn sessions to surf by ourselves. We went to a point break (only a gorgeous 1 hour drive from the house) called boca barranca for our afternoon/evening sessions during the swell to find perfect long lefts. I think we can guarantee that they were the best waves of our lives and we lived in hawaii for a while. I say that because we are goofy footed and we surfed some of the longest waves of our lives by ourselves for at least 1 hour every session. We didn't do any sightseeing or activities besides surfing though I do recommend pulling over at the crocodile bar and walking out on the bridge to see real costa rica wildlife. Every time we came back from the beach the warm real wood furniture of the house greeted us along with an iguana that lives next to the entrance gate. We will be turning this into a yearly trip and hope to return to this house until we can afford to buy our own! Also, the more famous and even longer point break pavones is only 4 hours away from the house so we still have much to do!

Special thanks to Aileen for opening up your home to us and the groundskeeper Carlos who greeted us at the door even though we were 5 hours late arriving due to rental car mix ups. The Ticos are an amazing people and we were welcome wherever our 1st grade spanish took us. No obligations just Pura Vida!
