The house overlooks Bass Harbor and the comings and goings of the Swans Island ferry, It is within walking distance of fishing wharfs, antique stores, art galleries, the post office, the library and a bus stop for the Island Explorer, a free transportation system for the entire island. Thurston's Lobster wharf is just down the hill, and it's a short walk to Back Beach, a wonderful coastal shoreline for walking, exploring, and viewing the passing boat traffic. The house is 10 minutes from the Ships Harbor nature walk in Acadia National Park, minutes from Southwest Harbor on the Quiet side of Mt. Desert, and 30 minutes from Bar Harbor. Enjoy biking, hiking, kayaking, and the Down East culture of the quiet coastal village of Bernard.
Potential renters note that improvements to the house has taken place this winter. Photo's will be added by mid spring. To much snow to take pictures.
We recently had the very good fortune to stay at the the Hinton House in Bernard, Maine for the second year running. What a rare find - nestled in a small working fishing village - one is able to enjoy Acadia Park fully! This house is close to Southwest Harbor and about a 35 minute drive to Bar Harbor as well.
The house and grounds are absolutely meticulous! The host, Marty Lyons, is wonderfully responsive to every need but yet not obtrusive in the least! The house is quite spacious and views of the working harbor are visible from several of the windows. Thurston's Restaurant is located almost directly across the street should one feel like a wonderful Maine lobster dinner. It is also located within walking distance of a wonderful beach as well as the post office and library.
I love this house - it truly feels like a home away from home! I have rented many other homes through VRBO and Homes Away From Home but the Hinton House is by far my favorite! I simply can't say enough about this very , very special place.
Thank you, Marty, for allowing making us feel to so welcome!
We have stayed at Hinton House 3 years in a row and enjoyed each visit tremendously! The house is comfortable and homey. There are so many different areas to enjoy - the front enclosed porch with swing, the back deck with grill, the side deck overlooking the beautifully kept yard and the various cozy sitting rooms inside. I cannot think of a nicer place to spend a week in Maine. The neighborhood is quiet, with a beautiful harbor that is fun to walk down to, where we often went to watch the boats coming and going. Thurston's Lobster Pound is just a short walk down the road for a real Maine seafood restaurant experience, with the dining area being right over the water! We can't say enough about this wonderful cottage and its location. It is truly a gem that I am glad we discovered. We couldn't get there this year, unfortunately, but hope to spend a week next summer!
This was our 4th trip to Maine and the best place we have stayed so far. It was such a beautiful, quiet, sweet little town and we absolutely loved it. The house was very nice and we felt very much at home there. The children (8 & 10) and the dog loved running around the yard and taking lots of walks out on the rocks when the tide was out. We also loved Back Beach. We were close to many of the activities we wanted to do but not right in the hustle and bustle which we enjoyed. Could not have asked for a better place, Marty was great to work with. We had my mom and sister with us for their first trip to Maine. My mom is 74 and just loved sitting in the living room by the door reading her book with the wonderful breeze. We will definitely stay here again on our next trip to Maine. We try to get back every 2 years or so as it is our favorite place to vacation!
The Hinton House was a wonderful way to experience Maine! Beautiful views of the working lobster boats in Bass Harbor from a very comfortable home in an authentic Maine neighborhood. A 5 minute walk to Back Beach was a real treat...very quiet (we never saw more than 6 people), and the sunsets and lighting made for ideal photography and backdrop for the local artists with their easels and brushes. And of course, proximity to fresh Maine lobster was phenomenal. We were regular customers at CH Rich in Bass Harbor, directly across the harbor from the house, who had an excellent assortment of hard and soft shells at very competitive prices.
We spent many days at Acadia National Park enjoying the many hikes, and ventured over to Bar Harbor (20 minutes) for hilarious comedy at Bar Harbor's Improve Acadia show (must see!). It was nice to be on the quiet side of the island, but with easy access to all the sites.
Marty was a very gracious host, and made us feel right at home.....fine Maine hospitality!
We highly recommend the Hinton House for a truly relaxing and authentic Maine vacation experience!

This was more than we expected. The cottage was charming allowing for family gathering and private time. We were close to many areas of interests. The younger set went hiking, bouldering, and rock climbing in Acadia Park and the senior clan went antique shopping. Thank you so much Marty for sharing your little bit of heaven.
After visiting this area several times and camping at the local campground, we decided to rent a vacation home. We found this lovely home (the pictures do not do it justice) and the price was right! The moment we arrived and walked in the house we new we had made the right choice. I am all about the view and though this house does not sit right on the harbor, the views are wonderful! The area is very quiet and the locals friendly. Several times we walked to Thurstons Lobster Pound for fresh lobsters and brought them back to the house. We also like the Seafood Ketch Restaurant across the harbor. The Ketch has a large deck right on the water and it is a perfect place to relax with a glass of wine while taking in the views of this working harbor.
The house is pet friendly. We brought our dog, Ellie, and was pleasantly suprised to find a small fenced area. While we bbq'd on the back deck, she could run free from the deck to the fenced yard. That is a huge plus!
If you have never been to Acadia Nat'l Park you must! A world of beauty at every turn with something for everyone. Renting this lovely vacation home is the ideal way to take in the beauty of Maine without breaking the bank. The owner, Marty, is a delight as we were able to spend a little bit of time with him. He let us know ahead when he would be stopping by to do a little gardening.
The only downside was having to leave. The two weeks we spent here flew by. But doesn't it always when you are in paradise!
Thanks, Marty, for opening this lovely home to all of us. What a gift!
If you are thinking of spending time in Downeast Maine, don't look any farther. This updated Barbard house is on the quiet side of Mount Desert Island, away from noise and traffic but just up the hill from a harbor full of working lobster boats and Thurston's Lobster Pound. It's close to Acadia National Park, but if you don't feel like getting into the car, you can walk down Leffingwell Road to a cozy little inlet to hear the gulls and watch the tide flow in and out. The house itself is well equipped, complete with all the conveniences, comfortable beds, and a roomy kitchen any cook would love. There is plenty of room for the little ones to play on rainy days as there is not only the "common room" with big screen TV but the front parlor, screened in front porch and a sun room. My husband and I especially loved taking our dinners out to the sunroom to watch the boats come home down in the harbor.
