Rarely marked on maps, Playa Barrigona and Playa Buenavista are such a heaven of solitude and serenity that olive ridley sea turtles travel thousands of miles across the Pacific each year to lay their eggs on these beaches.

The nearby villages of Samara and Nosara offer quaint restaurants and shops, but peace and quiet are the hallmarks of this stunning estate.

'The reality surpasses the expectations of our dreams by far ...'

About Alexandra & Michael

We are a family from Munich, Germany. Alexandra is a famous opera singer and Michael has a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and works at BMW Group in Munich. Our son Martin also loves the natural paradise of Costa Rica.

We bought Casa la Palma de Samara and come at least twice a year to stay there. During other times of the year, we rent this house to other families. Our excellent property manager Axel helps us to keep the house well-maintained and clean.

Secluded and nice, but hard to get to

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay in the house and the property is very nice by its own on top of the hill. The road to get here is a little bit of a journey by itself, but doable. Just be prepared to go through a little bit of rough roads to get to the house. After feeling like the roads couldn't get any worse, you end up in the driveway to the house and your temper cools down quite a bit. Tons of animals every day and the pool is a good size adn we spent many hours in it every day. The housekeepers at the time were Werner and Stephanie and they were great to deal with. There was no BBQ when we arrived, but a new one was in place the very next day. The house is in a very nice location and the only reason I gave a 4 instead of a 5 is due is due to some necessary updating to the house. It has a few years and you can tell in various areas. All in all, a very good stay and we had a great time being so far away from neighbours.

Beautiful Spot!

  • 5 of 5

This home was perfect for our needs as a family with young children. The backyard garden was an oasis in the hills with fruit trees and flowering bushes. Views from the yard of the surrounding hills and ocean were spectacular - watching monkeys in the trees right beside us while we ate breakfast was a highlight. We enjoyed the lovely pool every day. The location allowed for lots of walking/hiking around the surrounding hills and dry rivers to spot wildlife. The property is a quick drive to several awesome beaches - make sure to watch for monkeys in the trees! Axel went above and beyond in several ways to make our stay special, and had great tips and info on where to go and how to get around - a huge thanks to Axel for everything! Highly recommended!

We loved our time here, hard to leave

  • 5 of 5

Our stay here was fantastic. Let me start by saying that the experience was made so much better dealing with Axel. He was always quick to respond to anything we needed, easy to get a hold of and came by to help us when we needed him. The first night there, the AC unit in one bedroom broke down. He went above and beyond and had it fixed the next day (not an easy feat out in rural Costa Rica). He was a great resource for all things local. He recommended playa Barrigona, and that beach quickly became our favorite, it's beautiful and not inundated with tourists. There is also nearby Playa Buenavista, neither of those beaches are within walking distance in my opinion, even though they are both probably 5-7 minute drives. Then there is Playa Samara, beautiful and bigger than the other two beaches (but also much more crowded). There is snorkeling off Isla Chora on the southern end of Playa Samara, but it is not very good compared to anything that I have experienced on the Caribbean. Axel brought us fruit and fish to the house after having lengthy conversations with him about these things. Samara is a really cool little town, seemingly very surfer oriented. While larger than some of the other towns we stayed in, it had a great feel to it. There are lots of great restaurants in town. There are multiples spots on the beach to get a drink or some food. Our favorite place to eat was the Flying Taco, delicious local food at very cheap prices (it is a must visit). There are some more Americanized spots to eat like the restaurant called Outback, which had great food and a number of televisions tuned into all types of sports. The road into Samara is tiny and filled with ruts, but there is nothing like running into a bunch of cows hanging out in the shade on the edge of the road heading into and out of town. The best part was always coming back after a long hot day in the sun and jumping in the pool and watching the sun go down over the mountains, listening to all types of animals. A truly relaxing and enjoyable spot.

Thank you so much Axel

private, beautiful views, ideal for young kids

  • 4 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our month long stay at the beautiful Casa la Palma. The grounds and view are stunning and we spent a great deal of time splashing around in the pool with our two year old. If you're looking for privacy and an opportunity to unwind then consider spending some time here. The property manager Axel, his team of gardeners and house cleaner Sondra couldn't have been more accommodating and friendly. If you can, ask Axel to arrange a day of fishing while you're there. My husband did and had an amazing time. You're 5 minutes away form the exquisite beach Playa Barrigona as well as 10 min from Samara where you'll find many good restaurants and grocery stores. Also, check out Playa Guiones (30 min away) for it's surfing and yoga. While the house could use a little TLC ( the weather conditions in Costa Rica are extreme so this is to be expected) we wouldn't hesitate to come back to Casa la Palma to spend another holiday.
