We are a family of five beach lovers living in Washington, DC. This semi-oceanfront house is kid-friendly, with baby gates, a pack and play, a bassinette, books, toys and beach toys. We hope you and your family will enjoy this home and location as much as we do.
The Owner purchased this house in 2004
As young DC professionals, we rented homes and vacationed in Duck and Corolla for years. We liked the northern OBX beaches best because they are wide and not crowded. When we had our children and wanted to buy a home here, we picked this spot in Ocean Sands because it is on a quiet cul-de-sac of homes where our three children under 12 years old can play on their bikes or scooters, and can walk back and forth to the beach without fear of traffic.
The house's private pool, private hot tub and shaded hammocks provide a relaxing alternative to the wide, open beach. The house is also conveniently located to a supermarket (less than one mile to a great new Harris Teeter), with golf, tennis, shopping and restaurants all within two miles.
Great trip with two families. House well equipped for little kids with gates, toys, etc., plus super short walk to and from the beach when little ones need a break. We appreciated that the new kitchen was outfitted with every kind of utensil, from ice cream scoops and cheese graters to a food processor. Definitely fit for a foodie! Plus we loved the private pool and hot tub. Great house for our group. We will come back!
We had a really great time here over Memorial Day weekend. Three generations -- the grandparents, parents and grandkids -- came to stay. We enjoyed perfect beach weather, a great location (nearly on the beach, but also secluded from by-passers), private pool and hot tub, and easy access to golf, tennis, jet-skis, kayaks, and restaurants/shops. The house itself is not one of those massive new houses, but is 4 bedrooms, two TV watching areas, updated, nicely furnished, and clean, with a really well-stocked kitchen (even has a blender and a food processor!). Would definitely recommend this house and location for 10 or fewer people.
My overall experience at the In Port Cabin was good. The house was spacious and had a nice layout. The flat screen TV was a nice touch but the dvd player was on the fritz and we had trouble watching a movie all the way through without having to restart the dvd. The window seats were a great hit with a wonderful view and a nice place to cozy up and nap and read. Everyone had a place to go and have some alone downtime. Everyone had their own sliding glass door with access to the deck from their bedrooms. Although, the glass doors do need some attention because some only partially open and others are just so hard to open period! The decks were nice and the two hammocks were a wonderful place to cozy up on and read or nap on!! The house was close enough to the beach and private. We had to walk past the oceanfront homes to the beach and we could see right into their pool and hot tub area whereas our pool and hot tub area were private and secluded, big bonus for us. Who wants everyone looking at them when they are just lounging at the pool??? My son loved the nightly ice cream truck. He had a lot of ice cream!! The kitchen was fully stocked with pots, pans, plates, glasses & dishes. Could use a toaster instead of the toaster oven, but that is just a personal preference from my group. We had linens and towels included, very nice and convenient. We did have issues with some of the anmenities. The bikes had flat tires, the basketball hoop was in total disrepair, the horseshoe pits only had one spike and the overall landscaping was a bit overgrown and there were weeds growing about and around the pool area. Just unkept looking. It did supply boogie boards, beach chairs, a really nice beach umbrella, and rafts for the pool that we used and enjoyed immensely. Less packing!!! The cleanliness of the house when we arrived was deceiving. At first glance it was clean but as we started to settle in we noticed that the shower drain was blocked, we found miscellaneous clothing under the beds, the kitchen floor was dirty and sticky, just basic cleaning undersights and a little disappointing. But overall we had a fun week. We enjoyed the pool area and the hot tub and we had a prime location for the beach and shopping areas, gas stations, and watercraft activities.
