The Captain’s Quarters is sure to be your oceanfront vacation destination!
This single family one story home has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, and two full kitchens for two or more families to enjoy. You will overlook the Monterrey Bay Marine Sanctuary from the game room featuring vaulted wood beam ceilings, a full size pool table, and walls of oversize picture windows.
Generously spacious – with 160 feet of ocean frontage and enough parking for 4 cars, the Captain’s Quarters can easily accommodate 3 generations in comfort. Direct beach access is via stairway just a few steps from the deck.

We stayed at the Captain's Quarters for a week in June 2013, and enjoyed our visit tremendously. The views throughout the house are spectacular. The youngsters in our party delighted in being able to got right down the steps to the beach. The house, while 1970s quirky, was quite comfortable and very well equipped with everything from beach towels and sand buckets to plenty of serving ware and flatware, cooking utensils and everything needed for a home away from home. Liz of Beachnest was very helpful and responsive to our questions and concerns. We will be staying there again.
Let me first start by saying the view can not be beat. Gorgeous. The interior of the house desperately needs some attention. Its like staying at a frat house that they bought new comforters for. The carpet is stained, the kitchen is VERY under supplied - and the "Sleeps 8" factor is assuming 2 people are sleeping in the living room on an old, uncomfotable pull out couch. The wifi is very slow & the cords and modem are sloppily placed on a kitchen counter. I've rented many properties on VRBO all over the US and this was, by far, the most run down house. Do not plan on staying here with the intention of making meals, you will be VERY disappointed by the kitchen situation. Even the coffee maker didn't have everything needed to brew coffee. There was one wine opener, but the cork screw was broken off. The property management folks are very unorganized and unprofessional, (slow to respond & the different employees don't seem to communicate with each other).
The house is in a great location, with a trip to Ikea & Crate & Barrel they could really make the place much better. But, like I said in the beginning, the view & the location are amazing - if you are 6, 30 year old, surfers that just want a place to crash & order take out.
The house is beautiful on the outside in a great location with an incredible view and a great beach.
However, we felt that it is expensive for a view and two updated bedrooms.
We were very disappointed because none of the pictures show the following:
- Two clean kitchens but very old, with two ovens but no baking trays or oven dishes.
- Three clean but very small and old bathrooms, with holes and patches in the walls.
- Very used furniture in the dining room and especially in the family room. It is not showing because the sofa has been changed. It was very hard to feel comfortable and to relax.
- Stained carpet by the pool table and stained sheets and pillow cases.
- Two out of the four lounging chairs on the deck are broken.
we have been renting this property two times.
the location is great. the house itself is spacious. the furniture is very dated, given the building and location, it could be much better.
the only thing that has been remodeled is the parking lot.
this brings me to my main point to stay away from this property.
we have been asked to not park more than 4 cars in the driveway. since we had a child birthday party many people came. we asked everybody kindly to park
at a far distanced parking lot (15 walk). when a family with a new born came we said it would be fine to stay in the driveway for 2 hours to pack and unpack.
the owners of captains quarters were next door.
and have seen the 5 cars.
instead of calling they know ask beachnest rentals to withhold our 1000 $ deposit.
because of having 5 cars for 2 hours in the drive way.
this is so outrageous and
ridiculous. despite the fact that the contract says that the deposit can only be withheld when there is a damage, is this how you treat your customers?
the 2 times we rented the place we paid everything upfront, washed towels and left the property in perfect condition.
we are filing a dispute now, and are certain to get the deposit refunded.
bottom line, i would not recommend to do business with beachnest rentals or with the owners of the capatains quarters.
PS: very poor communication if dealing with them as well. good to have reviews!!!
I must admit that we have stayed at other beach homes in the Santa Cruz area for many years..This was our first time at the Captain's Quarters and we were very pleased at how spectacular it was. The views from every room were breathtaking, beds were comfortable, and with two kitchens our ability to cook for our large family visits was an added bonus. On Wednesday evenings we watched the sail boats come from the Harbor for their weekly sailing races, mornings having coffee on the massive deck watching the fishing boats head out for their morning catch, the Dolphins, we even spotted a spout from a couple of Whales on their migration, cocktails in the evening with a view of the lights from the Wharf was just another wonderful experience. We will come back again next year, staying longer and making more memories.
We had a great time in this rental--great views, convenient location. Plus the Beachnest staff was responsive and helpful!
