About Randy & Cathy Teinert

My wife and I moved to Minnesota in 1992, continued growing our family to 3 hard working boys that will someday take care of this place.

Randy & Cathy Teinert purchased this cabin in 2001

Why Randy & Cathy Teinert chose Orr

While on vacation to Lake Kabatogama we fell in love with the area, found a property that had been for sale for over 10 years, bought and started building our dream vacation home.

This is a guest house next to the main cabin, built to share with our friends and guest to enjoy as much as we have.

What makes this cabin unique

Lots of room with river and lake view from every window, very private.

Lots of pros, a few cons

  • 4 of 5

Let's start with the pros: This cabin is so charming and is situated with a great view of Ash Lake, with plenty of yard space for play, pets, etc. It's well-furnished and very comfortable, with a great open floorplan in the kitchen/dining/living area, which we loved.

Cons: As mentioned in other reviews, there are train tracks nearby. With windows closed it's not a big deal (I'm a very light sleeper and woke up to the horn a few times but fell back asleep quickly) but you will absolutely not be able to sleep through the night if you open the windows; it's just too loud. This wasn't much of an issue for us as the Fall nights were cool, but could be a problem in the summer. The gas fireplace wouldn't work for us, which was a bit of a bummer because it's the focal point of the living room and, as mentioned, temps dropped at night. As mentioned in other reviews, the shower transitions rapidly from icy cold to scalding hot, with little room in between to jump under the water and get clean at a comfortable temperature. Not the biggest deal if you are mentally prepared for it; but don't expect to have a nice relaxing shower. And, in the interest of full disclosure, though the cabin was very clean we saw two mice inside during our 3-night stay (and fresh mouse poop in a few places). We kept all our food in a big rubbermaid container and were careful about keeping the kitchen clean and doors shut, but the little guys were still in there. There are a few traps around the house but none of them were triggered during our stay.

Overall we really liked this cabin, but with a few fixes (mice, shower, fireplace) it could go from a nice place to a FANTASTIC place!

Owner's Response: Thank you for staying with us. We do strive to make your stay a FANTASTIC one. Yes, when the trees loose their leaves rand winter starts creeping in the train seams much louder, the little varments look for warmth and the gas on the fireplace shold be on! We do oppoligize for the fireplace, shower and mice and can let you know this has been addressed. We arrived the day you left and replaced the clogged shower head, turned on the gas for the fireplace and delt with the little unwelcomed friends. Again thank you for your comments.

Could have been better

  • 3 of 5

Me and my family came from Chicago for a week get away. The stay wasn't bad but we just couldn't sleep due to the loud train. The cabin was filthy, a lot of spider webs and flies. Windows were covered with webs and dirt. Shower was another issue, we couldn't control hot and cold temperature. It was a very nice view though and very nice owners. It was quite a far drive for hiking and doing outdoors stuff. I liked that we had washing machines and could use them. Upstairs was getting really hot. The main bed was very uncomfortable, we didnt sleep a bit. It was super soft and you could tell, very old. Overall, an ok stay but we hoped for better.

Beautiful place

  • 3 of 5

The cabin was great. Very cute place and very clean. The lake is also nice; very calm and very few boaters. Everything is provided as mentioned in earlier posts. The location is great next to Voyagers park and International Falls. The place would have been perfect except for a few issues. The train horn is actually very loud at night. We had a hard time sleeping. Be sure to use earplugs. Also, the beds are all upstairs - very cut loft area, but it is hot. They have an air conditioning unit which helps immensely, but it is loud and seems to need to be run all night to keep it cool enough to sleep. Finally the shower is a bit of a problem as mentioned in earlier posts. It is either cold or very hot. We could not find the middle ground. We still enjoyed ourselves and didn't let the few issues ruin our time as everything else was wonderful.

Almost Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

This was one of the best up N experiences my children and I have had. Randy is a gentlemen and very accommodating. The cabin was clean, the fishing was great, both rented boats ran great and everything in and out of the cabin functioned as it should. With the exception of the gas grill, just didn't get hot enough to GRILL anything, not even asparagus. Also it would have been nice if either one of the boats we had rented had an anchor.

The loons!!

Our stay at Randy's Ash Lake cabin exceeded expectations. It's nature's beauty and peace packaged with modern conveniences of home. We thoroughly enjoyed the pontoon boat and Randy's attention to his guests rivals any 5 star.

Beautiful cabin on quiet lake

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at the Ash Lake cabin! The cabin itself is gorgeous. Absolutely everything you need is there, from comfy furnishings, a washer and drier, all the pots, pans, bowls, utensils and even Tupperware that you could possibly need. We spent many days fishing and caught a lot of small mouth bass, pan fish and perch. The lawn is perfectly manicured and we played a lot of yard games during the day and enjoyed the abundance of stars in the evening. We took a couple of day trips to Voyageurs National Park, visiting both the Ash River Visitor center (on Kabetogama) and the Rainy Lake Visitors center. Both are a short drive from the cabin and well worth the visit. Loved all the pelicans on Ash lake, something we don't get to see every day! The trains definitely make their presence known, but as another commented, you kinda get used to it. We met the owner, Randy, on our last night. He was very nice and accommodating. All and all it is a beautiful cabin on a quiet lake with a great location!
