About the property

5 (+4) beds, living room, fireplace, bathroom, thoughtfully-equipped kitchen.

Located directly in front of Schlosshof Döben, Haus Burgblick has been carefully restored and blends in harmoniously with its surroundings. A splendid fireplace located in a cosy living room heats the entire building. Browse the many books, regional literature, or travel guides shelved in the old tool cabinet. The big sofa fits three bookworms and can be used for sleeping too. An antique door leads to the rustic kitchen, equipped with a dishwasher, large dining table, refrigerator, ceramic stove-top, oven, coffee maker, toaster, kettle, pots, crockery and utensils. Our quaint sandstone floors can withstand dirty feet or rubber boots, and the Mediterranean-tiled bathroom has underfloor heating. Equipped with 2 washbasins, a toilet, and a bathtub with shower curtain, the bathroom is calm and relaxing. An historic staircase leads to the first floor, where you will find both bedrooms, painted blue. The Schloßstraße (castle road) room is equipped with a baby cot, a marble chest of drawers, which can be used to change a baby's nappies, and a big antique bed. The Kirchberg (church mountain) room is equipped with an antique bed and a sofa bed.

The easy chair in the anteroom is great for reading or daydreaming. Lie about on the comfortable sofa in the half-timbered room, or use it for sleeping if the two beds behind the wooden framework aren't enough.

We made a conscious decision not to have a TV, so that our guests can spend their holidays enjoying nature, culture, and family.

About Dorothea v. Below

In 1991, Dr. Hubertus and Dorothea v. Below fell in love with the town of Döben - home to the family's Saxon branch until 1945 - and moved here from West Germany. Since then, they have worked on some of the old buildings here, in an effort to preserve or rebuild them. Opened in 1993, an eye doctor clinic in Grimma is the 6-person family's livelihood. Over the years, the family's 4 sons, aged 21 to 19, and 12-year old daughter have spent a lot of time at Schloßhof Döben. Even 14-year old Charlie, a Labrador cross breed, and 2 ponies named Bibi and Boby have become mainstays in the town. Three associations - the 'Friends of Döben Town and Castle,' the Grimma Rowing Club, and an association for the establishment of a protestant primary school in Grimma - have worked on livening up the area, be it through cultural events, visits to the castle grounds by students and schoolchildren, rowing events on the Mulde, or the much-needed continuation of the protestant primary school in a new school building, no longer in Döben, but in Großbardau.

Dorothea v. Below purchased this house in 2012

Why Dorothea v. Below chose Döben

Haus Burgblick is located directly across from the entrance to the castle and is part of the Schloßhof Döben grounds. It is a lovely and impressive house, that charms guests with a basement dug 30 m into the rock, a goat pen, old doors, mostly-antique windows, rustic floors, winding walls, and a small garden.

What makes this house unique

While the house was in very poor condition when we purchased it, it has since been lovingly renovated. Our main goal was to restore this landmark to its original, charming condition, while building beautiful rooms that refresh both body and mind.

We made the conscious decision to not have a TV in the apartment, to ensure that our guests can benefit from some much-needed relaxation and enjoy the apartment and area's quiet charm and atmosphere. With its flashing images and loud noises, television conflicts with the calm and relaxing atmosphere we wish to create. The apartment features a premium sound system, and a projector with screen are available for rent so that you can watch your favourite films without being disturbed by advertisements. For our adventurous guests: The Leipzig exhibition centre is an approx. 35 min. drive away, Leipzig city centre approx. 45 min, and Dresden approx. 50 min. In exceptional cases, we offer a shuttle service to Grimma (with connections to Leipzig), Leipzig, or Wurzen (with connections to Dresden) train stations, Leipzig airport, or the Leipzig/Dresden exhibition centre.

  • 5 of 5

  • 5 of 5

  • 5 of 5

  • 5 of 5

The beautiful ancient town of Döben is nestled in the Döbener Wald im Muldental nature reserve. Come see rare plants and wildlife, daydream under the old trees, explore the v-shaped valleys, and enjoy the fantastic view from the rugged cliffs. Small streams meander through the leafy temperate forest and flow into the Mulde, Europe's fastest flowing river, which flows directly below the forest in large arcs from Grimma into the Elbe.

The picturesque landscape inspires dreamers, painters, poets, or songwriters; famous names such as Caspar David Friedrich and his friend Carl Gustav Carus, Friedrich Gerstäcker, Seume, Japanese poet Mori Ogai, and even Otto the Rich and Frederick Barbarossa left their mark on Döben's history through paintings or poems.

The romantic cycling path along the Mulde and the fantastic nature trails lie next to the holiday apartment, as do our area's natural treasures.

The Haus Burgblick hotel and restaurant are located across from the castle gate. Dating back to approx. the year 1100, Schlosshof Döben is one of Saxony's earliest castles. You can visit the ruins of the once formidable castle that have been preserved since the last blasting in 1972, including underground tunnels, and moats. Some farm buildings have been carefully restored to be used as residences. The baroque 'Lug ins Land' pavilion, which houses a scale model of the area, offers a fantastic view of the Mulde river bend near Grimma; the pavilion's lawn is a great place to have fun or enjoy the evening sun with a glass of red wine while taking in the pleasant smell of the roses. For more information, visit the Döben website.

Come visit the Zettenwall in Döben, a wall that dates back to the Bronze Age located in an area that was later settled and used as a place of worship by Slavs and Wends. Its 300 x 500 m inner surface makes it the biggest four-sided wall in Saxony.

Come gaze at the Döben church's Romanesque origins and baroque ceiling frescos, stellar vault, and impressive altar.

In nearby Bahren (2.5 km away) you can visit the Grigoleit Trakehner stud farm, which houses riding stables and a restaurant. Höfgen (4.5 km away), the so-called 'Town of the Five Senses,' is home to two restaurants, an unspoilt baroque fortified church, the Mill museum, a ferry across the Mulde, a mini golf course, and a bowling alley, all next to some wonderful scenery.

An old clay pit, located 7 km away, offers the chance to swim in crystal-clear water or take an unforgettable mud bath. The medieval town of Grimma offers both relaxation and excitement (for more information, visit the town of Grimma website).
