The Mountain King Cabin is an amazing place to call home during your visit to Yellowstone Park. Located in the heart of Gardiner, on the banks of the Yellowstone River, it is just a mile from the north entrance to the park. The house faces south looking into the park highlighting stunning views of 11,000 foot Electric Peak. You can literally look out the windows, or off the deck and see: elk, antelope, deer, and occasionally bears and wolves roaming the hillsides of Yellowstone.
This rustic Montana log cabin is an inviting, airy open space it's is great for groups 6-8 with a fun loft for the kids! The Mountain King has private river access shared with the raft company for you fishing buffs. Walk down the path and have your line in the water in minutes. This stretch of the Yellowstone is a local secret because there are very few ways to access it. This section is not fished by commercial drift boats, the fishing is exceptional.
Stay in this beautiful cabin, AND spend a couple days rafting, horseback riding, and viewing wild life inside Yellowstone. It's easy and all in one place! Large groups can book our neighboring Yellowstone cabins the Eagles Nest and Grizzly Den.....perfect for multi-family vacations!
Thank you for sharing our cozy space and supporting our family! You help make our dream to raise two little munchkins possible! Our passions are family, giving back to people and community, and playing outside! We hope that in your time here you love playing outside too!
Liza faerber purchased this cabin in 2007
Airy and sunlight filled, this wood interior cabin is welcoming immediately! Dramatic scenic views off of the deck yet nestled in town for the perfect hum of a Yellowstone summer. Close to the park and walking distacne to all of Gardiner.
For larger groups, rent the neighboring Grizzly Den cabin or Eagles Nest cabin. Great for family reunions or work groups! We can also help connect you to a park tours, raft trips, and even a massage!
We had a fantastic tie! We rafter, rode horses, hiked, swam, animal watched and had many bbq's - thanks for the cabin it's beautiful
ps we saw a bear!
the house is comfortable and the view from the little deck is absolutely amazing. you're almost suspended over the river. our last night, we watched 2 adult and 2 baby elk wandering around on the opposite bank. lovely.
the problems with the house have been mentioned in a few previous reviews-- the biggest issues being: 1) thin walls-- the outfitting company next door started up with movement and music at 7:30-8:00 every morning. their deck butts up against the outer walls of the bedrooms of the mountain king. you won't be sleeping late here in the summer. if you're planning on rising early to go into Yellowstone, then it won't be a problem. 2) parking is pretty atrocious. it's a long thin alleyway. people at the rental next door were parked partially up on the small sidewalk for that house. we had to thread a needle between their car and a truck from a house across the alley. you will either be backing in or out. it's do-able but certainly not optimal.
the house has a great location, though, with the great river views but also easy walking to downtown Gardiner and shops/restaurants. we also walked to the Gardiner Rodeo while we were there. our kids loved the little bunk room on the second floor.
be aware of the parking issues but the other things about the house outweigh that issue for us. i would stay here again.
All excellent but this house has no privacy whatsoever from the slightest noise between rooms.
We enjoyed our stay. The beds were super comfy, which is high on my importance list! The deck overlooked the Yellowstone River and we were walkable to the grocery store and post office and the couple restaurants that were still open in early Fall. Even though there were beds for 8, there's only one couch, which was extremely uncomfortable overall, and broken on one end, so not sure where a maxed out cabin crew would sit. For our group of 3 it was adequate but we mostly chilled on our bed at the end of the long days out exploring Yellowstone. It also seems most well suited to summer travel, ie the fabulous deck, but again only seating for 4 out there, two of which were bar height seats. So again not really a great mix between beds and other living furniture. The heaters in the cabin aren't adequate for cold weather, but a call to Ike saved the day. He brought over two space heaters and we were soon cozy. Thanks for the great local tips, wish more of them had still been open but overall Fall a great time for Yellowstone. I was able to reach the owner by text, but got ahold of Ike first. Apparently not great cell reception for the owner, so texting her vs calling is definitely recommended.
Since the Flying Pig was closed for the season we didn't experience any issues as noted in other reviews, but I'm glad they were closed, since they are indeed super close to the bedroom windows. We were typically up before 8am anyway though since it's a half hour drive to Mammoth Hot Springs each morning into the park. Internet was so spotty we used our phone as mobile hot spot, so I wouldn't advertise "internet" here. Also since TV was streaming only, without actual internet, that means no TV. Not too big of a deal, but we'd envisioned piling up on the couch at the end of a long day out adventuring to watch a movie one or two evenings and instead neither couch nor TV set up allowed that option.
Parking was tight, and even though a few locals teased us about our little silver Prius, it fit into the spot! People mostly shared the alley parking fairly well. We thought the 911/Gun sign was funny and those neighbors were pretty friendly so take the sign with a sense of humor and respect for locals who may have to deal with travelers of all kinds...
This is the second time I have written a review for this cabin so I hope this one is used! this is a great cabin very easy to find from the address and I do not understand why all these reviews are not complimentary. we are a family of five from the United Kingdom and we had 5 great nights here. Easy to park, very friendly and helpful neighbours. great location for the park and the activities we did with Montana white water rafting. Clean and comfortable cabin with a great laundry facility. Full kitchen, large fridge and a wonderful deck with view over the river. good value and I recommend it. if you have a second car then you can park at the end of the side road with a 50 feet walk!
The location was wonderful, right above the river. We did not mind the "flying pig" rafting company next door, they keep completely quiet until 8am. However, it was odd just HOW close they are, and that one of the bedrooms has the window blocked by their life-vest rack literally a foot in front of the window. The flying pig company is great though, we went rafting with them and had a good time.
The house is beautiful, a nicely built cabin. Just a little attention to detail would be nice (like as many forks as there are beds, fixing chairs that are coming apart and fixing the blinds in the bedroom). WiFi/streaming also did not work for us, but that was fine. Given how close all the buildings are together in that neighborhood, we ended up using next door's open WiFi (I think a cafe on the back side). Somebody mentioned that the neighbors appeared unfriendly (with a gun sign), but they seem to be very welcoming to us. The sign is still there, but he also offered a lot of hiking advice (having been a former guide) and was very helpful, escpecially given that he has new "neighbors" every few days.
No check in desk, no staff, no wifi, when i arrived didnt know which is my cabin, called owner, she doesnt reply. Somehow got hold of her through the website, and then Got my deposit back after 3 weeks.
Just be prepared for all these issues.
Rafting and horse back rides and a picnic on Yellowstone lake are a must!
