My name is Kathleen Burwell; my husband's name is John. John was born and raised in Redding. I moved to Redding with my parents and siblings in 1966. I retired from teaching in 2010 after 37 years. John is a retired general contractor. We have no children but do have several nieces and nephews, and always at least two dogs.
Kathleen Burwell purchased this house in 1973
My parents bought the property where Battle Creek Retreat stands in 1973. They began building the house in 1976 and completed it in 1977. My mother died in 2000, my father in 2001. The house was left in a trust for nine family members. In 2008 we turned it into a vacation rental. In December of 2013 John and I purchased it from the rest of the family. It has become a fulfilling retirement project.
The beauty of the mountains can be found in the many lakes, streams, and forests. The elevation is about 4000 feet, so in a typical year, there is snow in the winter time, allowing for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and sledding. In the summer time, the main draw is Lassen Volcanic National Park. There are several points of interest within an hour's drive of Battle Creek Retreat. The springtime is beautiful with the redbud and dogwood in bloom. The fall is equally as beautiful with the many leaves of brilliant color.
Our property provides activities within a short walk. Battle Creek runs along one border of our property. In fact, our property goes to the middle of the creek. Kids and dogs alike love to play in the creek. Lake McCumber is within walking distance. There are several logging trails where guests can walk their dogs, although no motorized vehicles are allowed.
On the back patio there is a gazebo, a firepit, a picnic table, and a lot of seating. It is enclosed to give it a feel of complete privacy, although a lack of privacy is certainly not an issue at Battle Creek Retreat.
Thanks a lot for the wonderful welcome. The kids and us had a great time and really enjoyed the evening smors by the fire. we are hoping to come back soon and enjoy the cabin and the surrounding scenery.
It is our second time in your cabin and we again had a wonderful time. The kids had a blast and they loved Rebel's Retreat (bunkhouse). We hope to be back soon.
A wonderful spot to get away from hectic city life and only about 40 miles from Redding. We left the bedroom sliding door ajar and could hear Battle Creek rushing by. A beautiful rustic fireplace in the living room provided ample heat for the frosty nights. Beds were very comfortable and the beautiful forest could be enjoyed from all
windows. A truly great weekend!
Really enjoyed our weekend at this cozy home on Battle Creek. Our dogs loved the large enclosed yard, our kids loved playing in the creek and the fishing was amazing in the area. Very well appointed home with all amenities one needs and the fire pit outside was perfect for smores at night. Hope to stay again soon!
Our family of four loved the Battle Creek retreat. It provided a great launching point to lassen where we did a few hikes (bumpass hell and manzanita lake worked well with little ones). We also spent a day driving north to burney falls and subway cave for a few more hikes. When we didn't feel like leaving we stayed on the property and walked around the creek in the backyard or down to the lake nearby. Supposedly amazing fishing there as well, but we didn't get a nibble (probably too late in the season). The cabin clearly is an important part of the family, and it's treated as such - it had everything we could need, including toys for a 2-year old. Would definitely stay again when we next visit Lassen.
We spent two nights in this cozy cabin. The owner provided a pleasant surprise with a bottle of red wine, chocolate, cookies, and mash mallows. The cabin was clean, beautiful, well-decorated, well-equipped, and with lots of personal memories in there. You have to go there and explore it yourself. We also had a chance to chat with a neighbor who happened to be related to the owner of this property. Will definitely go back there again in the future.
I had some trepidation going this route since I do mostly hotels or backpack it in but since I had a large family to accommodate for this trip, I went with this. By the end, we were all hoping to stay extra days. It was a great experience and I'm probably going to do this again next year. Thank you Kathy! You truly have a magical place
The Battle Creek Retreat was amazing - in looks, accommodations, and all of the things that Kathleen provided. The house and grounds were exactly as Kathleen described. Everything very clean and well-maintained. Beautiful setting, with the back sloping down to a small creek that had good running water even in the drought -- she provided a lovely set of chairs at the creek which was a pleasant and relaxing place. The house was immaculate and large enough (with 3 bedrooms) for several folks. The master bedroom has a gorgeous view of the woods. Kathleen had the house very very well-stocked - including all the bed linens, towels (kitchen and bath) and soaps you would need (including shampoo in the bathroom). The kitchen was stocked completely with condiments, pots, pans, microwave and a refrigerator with an ice maker. All used to our complete satisfaction since we cooked all of our meals there while we were there. And the best thing of all - she left us a really good bottle of Shasta Daisy wine -- pino noir -- we loved it. The location of the house is also good -- only about 14 miles from Lassen National Volcanic Park. The road to the park is in great condition with not that much traffic during the week. We had lots of opportunities for good hikes and star gazing in and around the park while we were there. And I think the price for the stay is extremely reasonable for the value that is provided. Overall, a very impressive vacation place.
Even prior to our stay, Kathleen was helpful with all of my questions. She is a wonderful hostess and we would love to stay there again.
Thanks Kathleen - for a fantastic vacation.
