My name is Kathleen Burwell; my husband's name is John. John was born and raised in Redding. I moved to Redding with my parents and siblings in 1966. I retired from teaching in 2010 after 37 years. John is a retired general contractor. We have no children but do have several nieces and nephews, and always at least two dogs.
Kathleen Burwell purchased this house in 1973
My parents bought the property where Battle Creek Retreat stands in 1973. They began building the house in 1976 and completed it in 1977. My mother died in 2000, my father in 2001. The house was left in a trust for nine family members. In 2008 we turned it into a vacation rental. In December of 2013 John and I purchased it from the rest of the family. It has become a fulfilling retirement project.
The beauty of the mountains can be found in the many lakes, streams, and forests. The elevation is about 4000 feet, so in a typical year, there is snow in the winter time, allowing for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and sledding. In the summer time, the main draw is Lassen Volcanic National Park. There are several points of interest within an hour's drive of Battle Creek Retreat. The springtime is beautiful with the redbud and dogwood in bloom. The fall is equally as beautiful with the many leaves of brilliant color.
Our property provides activities within a short walk. Battle Creek runs along one border of our property. In fact, our property goes to the middle of the creek. Kids and dogs alike love to play in the creek. Lake McCumber is within walking distance. There are several logging trails where guests can walk their dogs, although no motorized vehicles are allowed.
On the back patio there is a gazebo, a firepit, a picnic table, and a lot of seating. It is enclosed to give it a feel of complete privacy, although a lack of privacy is certainly not an issue at Battle Creek Retreat.
Thanks a lot for the wonderful welcome. The kids and us had a great time and really enjoyed the evening smors by the fire. we are hoping to come back soon and enjoy the cabin and the surrounding scenery.
It is our second time in your cabin and we again had a wonderful time. The kids had a blast and they loved Rebel's Retreat (bunkhouse). We hope to be back soon.
The Battle Creek Retreat was amazing - in looks, accommodations, and all of the things that Kathleen provided. The house and grounds were exactly as Kathleen described. Everything very clean and well-maintained. Beautiful setting, with the back sloping down to a small creek that had good running water even in the drought -- she provided a lovely set of chairs at the creek which was a pleasant and relaxing place. The house was immaculate and large enough (with 3 bedrooms) for several folks. The master bedroom has a gorgeous view of the woods. Kathleen had the house very very well-stocked - including all the bed linens, towels (kitchen and bath) and soaps you would need (including shampoo in the bathroom). The kitchen was stocked completely with condiments, pots, pans, microwave and a refrigerator with an ice maker. All used to our complete satisfaction since we cooked all of our meals there while we were there. And the best thing of all - she left us a really good bottle of Shasta Daisy wine -- pino noir -- we loved it. The location of the house is also good -- only about 14 miles from Lassen National Volcanic Park. The road to the park is in great condition with not that much traffic during the week. We had lots of opportunities for good hikes and star gazing in and around the park while we were there. And I think the price for the stay is extremely reasonable for the value that is provided. Overall, a very impressive vacation place.
Even prior to our stay, Kathleen was helpful with all of my questions. She is a wonderful hostess and we would love to stay there again.
Thanks Kathleen - for a fantastic vacation.
We had a lovely time staying at the house. It was cozy and perfect for a family. The kitchen was well stocked and we all enjoyed the S'mores :)
The little creek is fun and the proximity to Lassen park was great.
We would definitely stay there again!
location was good, not too far from lassen park, cabin was big and more for large families than two women! cabin needed some updating like the carpets were very old and very dirty, also house was super dusty especially under beds and corners of rooms. beds and linens clean and comfortable, would suggest somehow some more natural lighting in kitchen, very dark even during the day, overall pleasant stay but needs updating
When you drive up to Kathy's home in the woods, you can smell the evergreens and the fresh air.
You can hear the creek running from the patio and master bedroom.
We traveled from Napa , so when we arrived , we went for a walk and found a small lake near by. We settled in and slept great in the comfy beds.
After hiking Lassen the next day, came back and fixed dinner.
The kitchen had everyone you need. Sat on the back patio where sat a wonderful fire pit.
To our surprise , it was all stacked with wood and ready to lite.
Had a fire with smores that Kathy also left for us!
The Propery had everything we needed and more!
Plenty of room for a group.
Kathy's hospitality went beyond expectations.
She even left us a bottle of wine !
Her neighbors treated us like family. I can't say enough about the experience.
I can't say enough about this wonderful home in the woods.
I highly recommend staying.
Kathy's home is amazing. Not only does it have everything 2 families of 4 could need, it was very well stocked. The wine and s'mores were a very much appreciated added touch. The house is very clean, quiet and comfortable. Don't miss this place! By the end of our stay we want to get shag carpet for our home - warm and very soft on the feet.
We very much enjoyed our stay at BCR as our home base for hiking in and exploring nearby Lassen National Park. Its peaceful and quiet forest location is an easy 10 minute drive from the northwest "Manzanita Lake" entrance to the park. The house is clean and well-equipped and easily handled our two vacationing families. The Burwells were very accommodating with our pre-trip questions and could not have made us feel more welcome -- the s'more-making materials and fire pit set with kindling were particularly appreciated (by kids and parents, respectively!). We had a delightful stay and look forward to returning when we explore this wonderful area again!
