About Kathleen Burwell

My name is Kathleen Burwell; my husband's name is John. John was born and raised in Redding. I moved to Redding with my parents and siblings in 1966. I retired from teaching in 2010 after 37 years. John is a retired general contractor. We have no children but do have several nieces and nephews, and always at least two dogs.

Kathleen Burwell purchased this house in 1973

Why Kathleen Burwell chose Shasta Cascade

My parents bought the property where Battle Creek Retreat stands in 1973. They began building the house in 1976 and completed it in 1977. My mother died in 2000, my father in 2001. The house was left in a trust for nine family members. In 2008 we turned it into a vacation rental. In December of 2013 John and I purchased it from the rest of the family. It has become a fulfilling retirement project.

What makes this house unique

The beauty of the mountains can be found in the many lakes, streams, and forests. The elevation is about 4000 feet, so in a typical year, there is snow in the winter time, allowing for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and sledding. In the summer time, the main draw is Lassen Volcanic National Park. There are several points of interest within an hour's drive of Battle Creek Retreat. The springtime is beautiful with the redbud and dogwood in bloom. The fall is equally as beautiful with the many leaves of brilliant color.

Our property provides activities within a short walk. Battle Creek runs along one border of our property. In fact, our property goes to the middle of the creek. Kids and dogs alike love to play in the creek. Lake McCumber is within walking distance. There are several logging trails where guests can walk their dogs, although no motorized vehicles are allowed.

On the back patio there is a gazebo, a firepit, a picnic table, and a lot of seating. It is enclosed to give it a feel of complete privacy, although a lack of privacy is certainly not an issue at Battle Creek Retreat.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thanks a lot for the wonderful welcome. The kids and us had a great time and really enjoyed the evening smors by the fire. we are hoping to come back soon and enjoy the cabin and the surrounding scenery.

It is our second time in your cabin and we again had a wonderful time. The kids had a blast and they loved Rebel's Retreat (bunkhouse). We hope to be back soon.

Battle Creek Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We spent 4 nights at the Battle Creek Retreat during the end of the winter season. The house was extremely well-stocked...all you need to bring is clothes and food!! The kitchen had every conceivable need covered (including small appliances, cookware, all utensils, storage containers, dining ware). There were extra blankets, pillows...plenty of firewood. The home is comfortable and inviting. The layout lends well to both communal and quiet time. The owners were gracious, conscientious and had clearly spent time in offering a place that has the guest's comfort and well-being in mind.

We enjoyed the Mt. Larsen National Park and proximity to the park entrance was part of our selection criteria. We also drove to another entrance just outside of Mineral (approx 1 hour drive).

Shingletown is nearby (10-15 mins) for groceries, gas, library...

We had a wonderful time and would not hesitate to recommend this rental.

Owner's Response: Gretchen, thank you so much for your wonderful review! I have my parents to thank for the comfortable, cozy vibe of the home. They were very sociable people who loved to share their home with others. When I know our guests have been made to feel welcome, I know I've done right by them. John and I couldn't believe how much snow had fallen during your stay! It must have been beautiful coming down but I'm sure it wasn't much fun when you had to dig yourselves out. It sounds like you were able to explore the area. I hope you had a chance to go down to the creek. It hasn't been that full for a long time. It washed our little bench downstream, probably to never be seen again. Thank you again, Gretchen, for your review. I know it takes time to do that. We very much appreciate it. Regards, Kathy

Owner's Response: Andy, I hope you and your friends were able to find enough snow to go snowshoeing. I'm glad you were able to enjoy the weekend outdoors and at Battle Creek Retreat. The creek was really rushing during your stay, and the dam at Lake McCumber was flowing over the top. I've never seen Battle Creek so high. I hope you were able to check it out. I appreciate your review, Andy! Regards, Kathy

A most wonderful place to stay. A Gem hidden away in the towering pines and firs. Very well kept and stocked. The best rental place we have ever stayed at! We look forward to coming back soon.

The serenity of the forest allows one to forget the stresses of work and the demands of life. I can't thank you enough for leaving the house so clean! Regards, Kathy

Quietly prepare for the New Year, 2017

  • 5 of 5

Battle Creek Retreat was the perfect spot for my end of year quiet time away from the world. I loved the fires in the fire place and the snow that covered much of the grounds. I really prayed for snow and it snowed on New Year's day. It was so beautiful and refreshing. Driving was a little iffy without chains so remember to plan ahead if any chance of snow. The house is so well equipped that there was nothing extra I needed. I took my little dog and she loved romping in the snow too. My favorite room is the master bedroom with a perfectly lovely view of the back and side of the property with clear access to the sounds of the creek babbling. The bed was very comfortable and cozy as well. Kathy and John are the best! Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with me.

Owner's Response: Patsy, it was so nice to read your review and to know how much you enjoyed your winter solitude! The thing about bookings this time of year is never knowing what the weather will be. I'm glad you had snow but, as you told me, it would've been nice having it early in your stay. You made the right call leaving when you did. I hope you'll be back - you were a wonderful guest!

We had a great time spending our holidays here. We had snow on the ground and it was perfect. Kathleen was easy to reach. The cabin is charming and the location is beautiful.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Christabeth! I'm always happy to know that people enjoy Battle Creek Retreat as much as our family always has! The weather has been so unpredictable, with snow, then rain, etc. As much as we enjoy the snow, it can become a problem when it comes to driving. I'm glad you were able to make your way out! Thank you again for your review and rating!

  • 5 of 5

Kathleen is the best host we have ever had. She is extremely prompt and helpful. The property is the most systematic, well put together, organized, beautiful and comfortable place we have ever stayed in before. We loved the place and will recommend to everyone. We went in the winters with snow all over adding to the magical beauty of the place. Just love love love the place.
