About Kathleen Burwell
My name is Kathleen Burwell; my husband's name is John. John was born and raised in Redding. I moved to Redding with my parents and siblings in 1966. I retired from teaching in 2010 after 37 years. John is a retired general contractor. We have no children but do have several nieces and nephews, and always at least two dogs.
Kathleen Burwell purchased this House in 1973
Why Kathleen Burwell chose Shasta County
My parents bought the property where Battle Creek Retreat stands in 1973. They began building the house in 1976 and completed it in 1977. My mother died in 2000, my father in 2001. The house was left in a trust for nine family members. In 2008 we turned it into a vacation rental. In December of 2013 John and I purchased it from the rest of the family. It has become a fulfilling retirement project.
What makes this House unique
The beauty of the mountains can be found in the many lakes, streams, and forests. The elevation is about 4000 feet, so in a typical year, there is snow in the winter time, allowing for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and sledding. In the summer time, the main draw is Lassen Volcanic National Park. There are several points of interest within an hour's drive of Battle Creek Retreat. The springtime is beautiful with the redbud and dogwood in bloom. The fall is equally as beautiful with the many leaves of brilliant color. Our property provides activities within a short walk. Battle Creek runs along one border of our property. In fact, our property goes to the middle of the creek. Kids and dogs alike love to play in the creek. Lake McCumber is within walking distance. There are several logging trails where guests can walk their dogs, although no motorized vehicles are allowed. On the back patio there is a gazebo, a firepit, a picnic table, and a lot of seating. It is enclosed to give it a feel of complete privacy, although a lack of privacy is certainly not an issue at Battle Creek Retreat.

Clean, Homey, Had Everything you could need...striking distance to Lassen
This well built and well maintained property has everything you could possibly need to get away and retreat....plus journey into the Lassen National Forest and Park. Explore the forest, reconnect with your family or stay in and write the great American novel...with cable and wifi.
Matthew, thank you for your well-written review. Who would have thought that the road through Lassen Park would still be closed at this late date due to snow! I hope you were able to experience Loomis Museum and other areas of Lassen that were accessible. I'm glad that you and your family were able to enjoy Battle Creek Retreat and the natural attractions within an easy drive from BCR.
Comfortable and lovely home
We stayed in this house for our Spring Break, coming down from Portland OR. This house is nestled in the woods in a beautiful location. When you look out the windows all you see are trees and it gives the sense of being in a treehouse. The property is stunning. The house itself exudes the love and attention of its owners. It is obvious this house is a family treasure and its a privilege to be a part of its history. The inside is absolutely adorable with the wood everywhere and the pictures online don't do it justice. The layout of the home is comfortable and roomy, with big areas if you want group time, as well as enough places for solitude. The beds were one of my favorite things....so comfy and inviting! The mattresses were all in excellent condition and obviously high quality. But more than that...even the sheets and the comforter made me think I was in an upscale hotel. This isn't a place furnished with castoffs. The kitchen is well stocked and the wine and coffee cups are a wonderful touch. There is a fireplace as well as a wood stove and the wood and kindling are in abundance. They have even taken the time to make fire starters and have kindling of differing sizes to make fire building easy. When we arrived the fire was all built and all we had to do was light a match. This is a house to go to even if you don't want to see any of the sights nearby. It's a wonderful getaway that recharges and relaxes. I can't recommend it enough and we will most certainly be back. Thank you for allowing us the privilege of staying in your home!
Wow! Kimberly, thank you so much for writing such a glowing, detailed, and lengthy review. You nailed it when you said Battle Creek Retreat is a family treasure. The work put into the place is done with love for my parents who left the property and house in our hands to care for. You mentioned the trees and the feel of being in a treehouse. Other guests have told us the same thing; I agree! Considering your length of stay, we couldn’t believe how little trash there was. Thank you for taking such great care of the place. We look forward to your return! Regards, Kathy
Amazing property with wonderful owners
We stayed here and absolutely loved it. Before we came, there was supposed to be a massive winter storm. Kathy was very approachable and took the time to answer all of our questions about everything from the potential weather, past storms in the area and the property. She was great to work with and responded very quickly to all of our questions and concerns. The property is absolutely beautiful. The house was stocked with everything we needed and it was very clean and organized. I loved the setting and would definitely come back and stay another time. Thanks Kathy!
Mark, thank you for such a complimentary review! I have to admit that I was nervous about a possible troublesome snow storm. You made the right decision to follow through on your plans. My parents used to snowshoe here, so I was glad to hear that you and your parents did, as well. My sister and friends and I are enjoying ourselves at BCR this weekend. There’s still snow all around up here - very beautiful! You and your parents were wonderful guests, leaving the place so clean that it’s as if you weren’t here. I hope that you visit again. Guests like you and your parents make everything worth the effort.
comfortable cabin in a quiet neighborhood
we spent our 4th thanksgiving in this cabin and again enjoyed every minute. Our time there is always wonderfully peaceful. There are plenty of couches to relax on, read a book, play games, listen to music, or watch movies. The kitchen is fully equipped and we have a blast cooking and baking. Taking walks or hikes either out of the cabin or within a 3-mile radius is very easy and there are many choices. Kathy, the owner, is very dog-friendly and let's us bring all our dogs. Finally, the cabin is clean and cozy, a perfect place to spend time in the mountains.
Sabine, I think it’s wonderful that you and your friends get together for Thanksgiving every year! I appreciate you choosing Battle Creek Retreat for your holiday get-together, and that BCR meets your needs for outdoor activities and indoor relaxation. It sounds like you all were able to accumulate more fun memories. When you mentioned the good times you had baking and cooking, it reminded me of all the laughing and bonding our family shared in that kitchen! Could you believe the difference in weather compared to your last visit! Thank you for taking such good care of the house. And thank you for your kind review. Regards, Kathy
Our technicians said this was one of the best places they have ever stayed. Clean, tidy, neat, and overall amazing. Thank you Kathy! We appreciate you welcoming us into your beautiful home.
Azetta, thank you for your rating and response! I’m so glad the crew was happy with the accommodations. It has to be tough to be on the road with a job, so if they felt at home at Battle Creek Retreat, then our mission has been accomplished. You are clearly very good at what you do and absolutely a delight to work with! We thank you for your booking and for your subsequent booking! Regards, Kathy
Great place for a weekend getaway.
Very nice place. Clean and comfortable. Kathy was very accommodating. We enjoyed it very much.
Thank you! I’m so glad you found Battle Creek Retreat to be comfortable, and that you had an enjoyable stay. There’s definitely something about the elevation, the trees, the sounds, the smells, the sights, and the wildlife that makes it feel so inviting and calming. Even though our time spent there involves cleaning, Battle Creek Retreat tends to have a therapeutic effect. My husband and I appreciate your rating and review. Again, thank you! Kathy
