About Kathleen Burwell

My name is Kathleen Burwell; my husband's name is John. John was born and raised in Redding. I moved to Redding with my parents and siblings in 1966. I retired from teaching in 2010 after 37 years. John is a retired general contractor. We have no children but do have several nieces and nephews, and always at least two dogs.

Kathleen Burwell purchased this house in 1973

Why Kathleen Burwell chose Shasta Cascade

My parents bought the property where Battle Creek Retreat stands in 1973. They began building the house in 1976 and completed it in 1977. My mother died in 2000, my father in 2001. The house was left in a trust for nine family members. In 2008 we turned it into a vacation rental. In December of 2013 John and I purchased it from the rest of the family. It has become a fulfilling retirement project.

What makes this house unique

The beauty of the mountains can be found in the many lakes, streams, and forests. The elevation is about 4000 feet, so in a typical year, there is snow in the winter time, allowing for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and sledding. In the summer time, the main draw is Lassen Volcanic National Park. There are several points of interest within an hour's drive of Battle Creek Retreat. The springtime is beautiful with the redbud and dogwood in bloom. The fall is equally as beautiful with the many leaves of brilliant color.

Our property provides activities within a short walk. Battle Creek runs along one border of our property. In fact, our property goes to the middle of the creek. Kids and dogs alike love to play in the creek. Lake McCumber is within walking distance. There are several logging trails where guests can walk their dogs, although no motorized vehicles are allowed.

On the back patio there is a gazebo, a firepit, a picnic table, and a lot of seating. It is enclosed to give it a feel of complete privacy, although a lack of privacy is certainly not an issue at Battle Creek Retreat.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thanks a lot for the wonderful welcome. The kids and us had a great time and really enjoyed the evening smors by the fire. we are hoping to come back soon and enjoy the cabin and the surrounding scenery.

It is our second time in your cabin and we again had a wonderful time. The kids had a blast and they loved Rebel's Retreat (bunkhouse). We hope to be back soon.

Warm welcome in a beautiful cabin

  • 5 of 5

We spent two nights in this cozy cabin. The owner provided a pleasant surprise with a bottle of red wine, chocolate, cookies, and mash mallows. The cabin was clean, beautiful, well-decorated, well-equipped, and with lots of personal memories in there. You have to go there and explore it yourself. We also had a chance to chat with a neighbor who happened to be related to the owner of this property. Will definitely go back there again in the future.

Owner's Response: Chris, I very much appreciate your review. Thank you! The neighbor you met was my sister. She told me she had an opportunity to meet you. I envy her for that as my husband and I rarely have a chance to meet our guests face-to-face. I'm so glad Battle Creek Retreat worked out for your reunion. You were terrific guests! Thank you for booking with us! Kathy

A true home away from home

  • 5 of 5

I had some trepidation going this route since I do mostly hotels or backpack it in but since I had a large family to accommodate for this trip, I went with this. By the end, we were all hoping to stay extra days. It was a great experience and I'm probably going to do this again next year. Thank you Kathy! You truly have a magical place

Owner's Response: Thomas, we just got home from cleaning BCR and were very happy to see your review. Thank you so much! I'm glad you found the place accommodating. I'm curious to know if you found a good place for star gazing. I used to take night walks with my parents and Dad would point out the constellations and major stars and star groupings. He and mom would be happy to know that Battle Creek Retreat had guests who shared their interests. You and your family would be welcome back anytime. Thank you for your nice comments! Kathy

Fantastic place to stay -- LOVED IT!!!

  • 5 of 5

The Battle Creek Retreat was amazing - in looks, accommodations, and all of the things that Kathleen provided. The house and grounds were exactly as Kathleen described. Everything very clean and well-maintained. Beautiful setting, with the back sloping down to a small creek that had good running water even in the drought -- she provided a lovely set of chairs at the creek which was a pleasant and relaxing place. The house was immaculate and large enough (with 3 bedrooms) for several folks. The master bedroom has a gorgeous view of the woods. Kathleen had the house very very well-stocked - including all the bed linens, towels (kitchen and bath) and soaps you would need (including shampoo in the bathroom). The kitchen was stocked completely with condiments, pots, pans, microwave and a refrigerator with an ice maker. All used to our complete satisfaction since we cooked all of our meals there while we were there. And the best thing of all - she left us a really good bottle of Shasta Daisy wine -- pino noir -- we loved it. The location of the house is also good -- only about 14 miles from Lassen National Volcanic Park. The road to the park is in great condition with not that much traffic during the week. We had lots of opportunities for good hikes and star gazing in and around the park while we were there. And I think the price for the stay is extremely reasonable for the value that is provided. Overall, a very impressive vacation place.

Even prior to our stay, Kathleen was helpful with all of my questions. She is a wonderful hostess and we would love to stay there again.

Thanks Kathleen - for a fantastic vacation.

Owner's Response: Ellen, what a wonderfully thorough review of Battle Creek Retreat, very descriptive and detailed. If you don't have a career in advertising, you should! I'm so glad you found Battle Creek Retreat accommodating. Someone once described the master bedroom as being in the tree tops. Upon awakening in that room, the first thing one sees are the branches of the evergreens. All worries dissipate when gazing at such a calming sight. Thank you, Ellen, for the rating and review. I hope you will be able to return at some point. We would love to have you! Gratefully, Kathy

Family Forest Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely time staying at the house. It was cozy and perfect for a family. The kitchen was well stocked and we all enjoyed the S'mores :)

The little creek is fun and the proximity to Lassen park was great.

We would definitely stay there again!

Owner's Response: We're so glad Battle Creek Retreat worked out well for you! Thank you for being such great guests. It hardly looked like you and your family were there! I'm glad you were able to enjoy the s'mores. We have since asked our guests to refrain from lighting a fire in the fire pit. The temperatures have been so high and conditions are so dry. Fortunately, the creek serves as a refreshing spot to cool off. Thank you for your positive review. It is very much appreciated!

location was good, not too far from lassen park, cabin was big and more for large families than two women! cabin needed some updating like the carpets were very old and very dirty, also house was super dusty especially under beds and corners of rooms. beds and linens clean and comfortable, would suggest somehow some more natural lighting in kitchen, very dark even during the day, overall pleasant stay but needs updating

Owner's Response: Abby, I was taken aback by your review. It's hard for me to believe you found the house dusty as we give the house a thorough cleaning before guests arrive. As you know, we were in the process of cleaning when you showed up an hour and a half before check-in time. We had a small window of time to clean since we had guests who had left just two and a half hours before you arrived. In spite of that, we made certain the house was clean. I agree with you that the carpet is outdated. Hopefully, we can replace it soon.

Wonderful home and place to stay while visiting Lassen National Park.

  • 5 of 5

When you drive up to Kathy's home in the woods, you can smell the evergreens and the fresh air.

You can hear the creek running from the patio and master bedroom.

We traveled from Napa , so when we arrived , we went for a walk and found a small lake near by. We settled in and slept great in the comfy beds.

After hiking Lassen the next day, came back and fixed dinner.

The kitchen had everyone you need. Sat on the back patio where sat a wonderful fire pit.

To our surprise , it was all stacked with wood and ready to lite.

Had a fire with smores that Kathy also left for us!

The Propery had everything we needed and more!

Plenty of room for a group.

Kathy's hospitality went beyond expectations.

She even left us a bottle of wine !

Her neighbors treated us like family. I can't say enough about the experience.

I can't say enough about this wonderful home in the woods.

I highly recommend staying.

Owner's Response: I read your impressions of Battle Creek Retreat and am reminded just how lucky we are to have a place in such a beautiful area. Every time I get out of the car upon arrival, the fresh smell of the evergreens hits with pleasant force. I'm so glad others have the opportunity to experience the forest, creek, lake, Lassen Park, etc. then relax in a house made comfortable by my parents. I'm glad you were able to meet my sister and brother-in-law. They were both enthused about meeting you! I wish we lived nearby so that John and I, too, could meet our very interesting guests. Thank you for the wonderful review!
