Cozy Cottage in a Tropical Garden Grove

Bedrooms 1
Space 750 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

The Cottage at Ohia Grove is a quirky, cozy cabin nestled in the corner of our private four-acre park-like grounds. If your idea of an ideal vacation is time spent reading an engrossing novel...enjoying lazy afternoons naps…taking trips to view interesting natural wonders … exploring steam vents and tidal pools… poking around a farmers’ market…sampling the cuisine at nearby restaurants... or just playing a rousing game of Scrabble, then we invite you to consider a stay at the Cottage at Ohia Grove.

If you’re looking for four-star amenities and appointments, this is not the place for you; you won’t be happy, and neither will we. But if you’re searching for a vacation rental offering comfortable sleeping and lounging space (including our new screened lanai overlooking the gardens), a convenient location near historic Hilo town, and a price tag that won’t keep you up at night, we just might be what you’re looking for! The Cottage is perfect for week-long vacations, island hopping, house-hunting or property development visits, writer's retreats or for anyone who just wants to get away to the tropics.

The Ohia Grove property is four private acres of lush, native Hawaiian fruits, vegetation and, of course, ohia trees (pronounced 'oh-hee'-a,' ). During your stay, we invite you to pick fresh avocados, starfruit, citrus and mangos from our trees, and to enjoy looking at the many wild and cultivated flowers that grow on the grounds.

About The Owner

Don and Rich were frequent visitors to the Big Island for years before we decided to reduce our traveling expenses and just stay here for good! Rich retired after 26 years at Verizon in Washington DC, where he last served as Executive Director of Federal Regulatory Affairs. He can now usually be found puttering around the house or working on his tan at a local beach. Don is an Information Technologies and Networking specialist who has worked for a variety of organizations, including non-profits, a trade union, a major computer graphics company and several consulting firms. In his non-working hours in Hawaii, he likes to garden at Ohia Grove and at our permanent residence around the corner. All of our jobs on the mainland involved extensive travel, so when we set up our vacation rental, we based it on our experiences. We've worked to set up a Cottage that is comfortable, convenient, cozy -- and moderately priced. We hope you'll enjoy your stay and come to love the Big Island as much as we do. Aloha!

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2007

Why The Owner chose Big Island Hawaii

We loved the tropical setting of the four-acre Ohia Grove property, with its many native fruits, flowers and palms. Although it's convenient to Hilo and other area tourist sites, when you're on the property, you feel like you're in your own private tropical garden (and you really are!)

What makes this cottage unique

One of property's biggest assets is the sense of privacy - rather than being sandwiched in with other tourists in a busy hotel or B&B, you'll have the Cottage and its four-acre property all to yourselves.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you so much for all the hospitality. (We appreciated) the beautiful yard, fresh fruit and cozy cottage.

We recently added an open-air outdoor shower that has been very popular with our guests. It's how Adam and Eve would have washed up if they'd had hot water and plumbing :)

Wonderfully quaint cottage surrounded by nature

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Richard's cottage. He has considered every detail with his guests in mind. We arrived to find a bowl of fresh fruit and coffee (so ono!), a very detailed book of information on the house and the island, and a collection of maps and guidebooks. There are thoughtful notes throughout the cottage, avoiding the usual, "I wonder how this works?" The home is filled with beautifully arranged flowers. We lost count after 7 or 8 arrangements. I am sure maintenance is difficult in these surroundings, but the home was spotless and well cared for. We didn't mind the frogs, but there are earplugs available for those who do. We would definitely stay here again.

Making the most of our Big Island experience

  • 5 of 5

Rich and Don are the most organized hosts we've had in our travels around the world. Rich communicated regularly with us before our trip, including providing detailed directions on getting to the cottage. The welcome binder in the cottage is the most thorough we've seen by far. Even then, Rich gave us additional tips and tricks after we arrived based on our plans. In addition to being organized, they were very considerate. Before coming to the house to do yardwork, they checked with us to ensure they wouldn't disturb our 22-month-old son. My wife became ill the night before we were to depart. Since no one had the cottage immediately after us, they allowed us to stay most of the day so my wife had time to recover. That made the trip home much more bearable.

The cottage itself is the ideal way to experience the Big Island. The grounds are beautiful, so you feel like you are in your own slice of paradise. We immediately felt welcome thanks to the Hawaiian music playing on the CD player, the flower arrangements around the cottage, and the fruit bowl on the dining table. The cottage is spacious, the shower has plenty of hot water and pressure, and the Wi-fi is fast. The kitchen doesn't have the most up-to-date furnishings but does have everything you need for cooking your own meals. The screened-in lanai is the ideal place to eat your meals or just relax. I HIGHLY recommend using the outdoor shower. It is like something out of a travel show and one of the best showers I have ever taken. Initially I was concerned about the noise made by the frogs and bugs. However, the noises quickly became part of the scenery and didn't disturb our sleep in the comfortable bed.

Since the cottage is south of Hilo, it is closer to Volcanoes National Park (about 45 min) but only about 15-20 min from Hilo itself. The Wednesday night market (about 20 min down Hwy 130) is great for the food, crafts, live music, and people watching. There is a gas station about 1 mile away for immediate needs and Kea'au is only 10 minutes away for groceries and other needs. The road in is unpaved and a bit rough, so I recommend arriving during daylight so you can navigate the potholes.

If you choose to stay here, you will be glad you did and thoroughly enjoy Rich and Don's hospitality.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the really nice review - glad you had a good time! Sorry about the road - we've had a really rainy spring, so the last 1/4 stretch is bumpier than usual. Hopefully the road crews will get more gravel down soon, but till then just take it slow and keep saying "I'm driving a rental car..." :) Hope to see you all back here soon...I'll have malasadas waiting!

Very quaint, quiet cottage in a private setting.

Great location, great cottage with all of the amenities required for a long stay. The owners were very attentive and went out of there way to ensure we were comfortable and aware of things to do. This a great place to stay and enjoy the Hilo side of the island.

Cozy, clean and have everything you need for a stay

  • 5 of 5

Very impressed by the fresh fruits and flowers. The owners are very thoughtful to leave the music and light on. We arrived very late because of the delayed flight. The light helped a lot. Also the owners prepared everything you may need from shampoo, soap, dish wash detergent to plenty beach towels and etc. Very convenient. Thanks.
