Overview

About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

The Cottage at Ohia Grove is a quirky, cozy cabin nestled in the corner of our private four-acre park-like grounds. If your idea of an ideal vacation is time spent reading an engrossing novel...enjoying lazy afternoons naps…taking trips to view interesting natural wonders … exploring steam vents and tidal pools… poking around a farmers’ market…sampling the cuisine at nearby restaurants... or just playing a rousing game of Scrabble, then we invite you to consider a stay at the Cottage at Ohia Grove.

If you’re looking for four-star amenities and appointments, this is not the place for you; you won’t be happy, and neither will we. But if you’re searching for a vacation rental offering comfortable sleeping and lounging space (including our new screened lanai overlooking the gardens), a convenient location near historic Hilo town, and a price tag that won’t keep you up at night, we just might be what you’re looking for! The Cottage is perfect for week-long vacations, island hopping, house-hunting or property development visits, writer's retreats or for anyone who just wants to get away to the tropics.

The Ohia Grove property is four private acres of lush, native Hawaiian fruits, vegetation and, of course, ohia trees (pronounced 'oh-hee'-a,' ). During your stay, we invite you to pick fresh avocados, starfruit, citrus and mangos from our trees, and to enjoy looking at the many wild and cultivated flowers that grow on the grounds.

About The Owner

Don and Rich were frequent visitors to the Big Island for years before we decided to reduce our traveling expenses and just stay here for good! Rich retired after 26 years at Verizon in Washington DC, where he last served as Executive Director of Federal Regulatory Affairs. He can now usually be found puttering around the house or working on his tan at a local beach. Don is an Information Technologies and Networking specialist who has worked for a variety of organizations, including non-profits, a trade union, a major computer graphics company and several consulting firms. In his non-working hours in Hawaii, he likes to garden at Ohia Grove and at our permanent residence around the corner. All of our jobs on the mainland involved extensive travel, so when we set up our vacation rental, we based it on our experiences. We've worked to set up a Cottage that is comfortable, convenient, cozy -- and moderately priced. We hope you'll enjoy your stay and come to love the Big Island as much as we do. Aloha!

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2007

Why The Owner chose Puna District

We loved the tropical setting of the four-acre Ohia Grove property, with its many native fruits, flowers and palms. Although it's convenient to Hilo and other area tourist sites, when you're on the property, you feel like you're in your own private tropical garden (and you really are!)

What makes this cottage unique

One of property's biggest assets is the sense of privacy - rather than being sandwiched in with other tourists in a busy hotel or B&B, you'll have the Cottage and its four-acre property all to yourselves.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you so much for all the hospitality. (We appreciated) the beautiful yard, fresh fruit and cozy cottage.

The real Hawaii

  • 5 of 5

I cannot say enough good things about this adorable cottage. We stayed for a month and loved every minute. The gentlemen who own/run this place are just the best! Really prompt if we needed anything, thought to check on us and very knowledgable about the island. The house is well stocked with everything you need. We can't wait to come back!

Great place to get away from the daily grind

  • 4 of 5

We had such a nice stay. The cottage is great and most of the jungle noise was very relaxing (just not the rooster).

Owner's Response: Thanks for the nice comments you left in our guest book. Glad you had a great time despite the pesky new rooster who has taken up residence (without paying rent, I might add). Unfortunately, feral creatures are a normal part of life in rural Hawaii. We only became aware of this new rooster's presence when the guests before you checked out. We offered to try to trap and relocate the little guy during your stay. but you said it wasn't a serious issue for you, so we held off until after your departure in order to give you more privacy. Hopefully within the next day or two, however, Foghorn Leghorn Jr. will be enjoying a new home in a more remote and distant neighborhood. Update: I'm happy to report that the rooster and his two sisters/girlfriends (we don't judge...) have been relocated to a new, more rural neighborhood where they won't be disturbed by the comings and goings of our valued guests :).

Great getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Aloha! What a charming cottage! The screened in lanai was probably our favorite part! It's secluded but not far from town either. Don and Rich were quick to respond to any questions we had. Loved listening to all the sounds of the nature surrounding us (except for the pesky rooster with no sense of time). We ate in most of the time so the gas grill was great and the little stove in the house rocks! Absolutely loved the fresh fruit and coffee basket and all the vases of beautiful flowers! Thank you so much for your hospitality! Mahalo

Owner's Response: Glad you had a great time! Sorry about the wild rooster - we relocated his dad to a more rural location a few months ago, but didn't realize he had a progeny who had come of age. Time to set out the traps and reunite the family!

Between Hilo and Pahoa is where it's

  • 5 of 5

This cozy cottage was our base for three nights and we loved it. The sounds were mainly chirping frogs and birds with only the occasional, insecapsble car motor. Rich made sure we had everthting we needed and even did us a favor the morning we left so we could hit more more beach before heading back to the mainland. Thanks and easily recommended.
