The Cottage at Ohia Grove is a quirky, cozy cabin nestled in the corner of our private four-acre park-like grounds. If your idea of an ideal vacation is time spent reading an engrossing novel...enjoying lazy afternoons naps…taking trips to view interesting natural wonders … exploring steam vents and tidal pools… poking around a farmers’ market…sampling the cuisine at nearby restaurants... or just playing a rousing game of Scrabble, then we invite you to consider a stay at the Cottage at Ohia Grove.
If you’re looking for four-star amenities and appointments, this is not the place for you; you won’t be happy, and neither will we. But if you’re searching for a vacation rental offering comfortable sleeping and lounging space (including our new screened lanai overlooking the gardens), a convenient location near historic Hilo town, and a price tag that won’t keep you up at night, we just might be what you’re looking for! The Cottage is perfect for week-long vacations, island hopping, house-hunting or property development visits, writer's retreats or for anyone who just wants to get away to the tropics.
The Ohia Grove property is four private acres of lush, native Hawaiian fruits, vegetation and, of course, ohia trees (pronounced 'oh-hee'-a,' ). During your stay, we invite you to pick fresh avocados, starfruit, citrus and mangos from our trees, and to enjoy looking at the many wild and cultivated flowers that grow on the grounds.

Don and Rich were frequent visitors to the Big Island for years before we decided to reduce our traveling expenses and just stay here for good! Rich retired after 26 years at Verizon in Washington DC, where he last served as Executive Director of Federal Regulatory Affairs. He can now usually be found puttering around the house or working on his tan at a local beach. Don is an Information Technologies and Networking specialist who has worked for a variety of organizations, including non-profits, a trade union, a major computer graphics company and several consulting firms. In his non-working hours in Hawaii, he likes to garden at Ohia Grove and at our permanent residence around the corner. All of our jobs on the mainland involved extensive travel, so when we set up our vacation rental, we based it on our experiences. We've worked to set up a Cottage that is comfortable, convenient, cozy -- and moderately priced. We hope you'll enjoy your stay and come to love the Big Island as much as we do. Aloha!
The Owner purchased this cottage in 2007
We loved the tropical setting of the four-acre Ohia Grove property, with its many native fruits, flowers and palms. Although it's convenient to Hilo and other area tourist sites, when you're on the property, you feel like you're in your own private tropical garden (and you really are!)
One of property's biggest assets is the sense of privacy - rather than being sandwiched in with other tourists in a busy hotel or B&B, you'll have the Cottage and its four-acre property all to yourselves.
Thank you so much for all the hospitality. (We appreciated) the beautiful yard, fresh fruit and cozy cottage.
This cottage is absolutely beautiful with a tropical garden. The hosts prepared all we need (with flowers in the house, coffee and fruits) for us. And the location is perfect to discover the volcano, Hilo, Puna, and the east coast of big island.
The cottage is a wonderful place to stay in order to explore the Hilo side of the Big Island! It's one of those rare properties that is actually better in person than what you see in the pictures! Rich and Don are great caretakers of not only the cottage, but of their guests as well. The cottage has all of the amenities you'll need, including a well-stocked and large kitchen, washer and dryer, internet access that never let us down, TV, or the option of ignoring the electronic side of your world and just enjoying all of the sounds of your own piece of a Hawaiian rain forest with a sense of privacy you'll never find in other properties or resorts. It even has an outdoor shower if desired! Easy access to Hilo, Volcano Village and Volcano National Park, as well as the current lava viewing areas along the coast.
Recommended not only for the cottage, but for the hospitality and sense of Aloha that Rich and Don provide! They are there when you need them (as we experienced during the approach and near-miss of Hurricane Madeline!) and are quick to answer any questions or concerns you may have!
Thank You Rich and Don for your generous sense of hospitality, care and local knowledge!
My wife and I rented this cottage at Ohia Grove for two weeks in July. We selected the cottage after reading its reviews as well as those of similar places in the Puna area. In short, the excellent reviews of this place were right on. The cottage is in a secluded area but still very close to the main highway allowing easy access to the surrounding areas of Hilo, Pahoa, and Volcano. We were actually pleasantly surprised by the fact that the inside of the cottage is actually nicer than the photos indicate. The cottage has a cozy, yet open feel to it with vaulted ceilings and ceiling fans in every room. The structure of the cottage is in great shape, and the bed, futon, and furniture were also in good shape and comfortable. There's also plenty of windows and a large, screened covered porch, which we used quite often. The cottage has all the comforts of home, washer/dryer, satellite TV, microwave and other appliances, water cooler, and a set of table/chairs in both the kitchen and porch. There are plenty of bath and beach towels. When we arrived, the place was spotless, and there were fresh flowers in several rooms as well as a basket of fruit and package of coffee. So upon arrival, this place immediately felt like a home....a relaxing place to return to after a day of sightseeing.
Perhaps the best reason to stay here is the attentiveness of the owners. They live nearby and came over immediately whenever we needed something. In addition to the binder listing restaurants, markets, and things to do in the area, the owners are readily available with helpful advice. For our trip to the Kohala coast, they provided us with information on B&Bs, restaurants, and beaches as well as beach chairs and umbrella. In the cottage we found two guest books containing only positive testimonies for the past seven years showing the owners having a long track record of providing a first rate experience for their guests. It is clear that they really care about their guests! We loved our stay in all respects, and it is our pleasure to highly recommend this cottage to others!
My husband, young son and I stayed in for a week and a half in February. We all absolutely loved this place... the favorite of our 3 stays on the big island. We very much appreciated all the attention to detail and felt very welcome in this cottage. On arrival, there was Hawaiian music playing quietly, flowers in each room, a bowl of local fruit and a letter welcoming us to the cottage. The hosts provided plenty of information on nearby activities and sights and were very warm and welcoming. The house itself was very clean and quite comfortable for our family. The property is 5 acres but feels much larger and feels very private thanks to a curved driveway and thick foliage obscuring the view of the neighbors and the road. There is a short drive to most activities/ sights and this side of the island was less "beach oriented" than the other side... but we were well aware of that on booking and welcomed the change in scenery. The outdoor shower was a hit with our 4 year old, and with us too. The starfruit on the tree were ripe and were the absolute highlight of Hawaii for our little guy. He likes to tell people that he picked and ate fresh stars on our vacation. The only thing we didn't love about our stay was the rooster that crowed at all hours. The coqui frogs' song was actually pleasant (albeit loud)... enjoyed the sound in the evenings and used earplugs for sleeping. Thank you so much. One day, we will be back. And we strongly recommend this place to others, too.
We traveled from Alaska and stayed at Ohia Grove June 17 through 22.
First of all - the host is amazing and I do wish we met Rich in person. He gets back with you very quickly with all the answers and helpful suggestions. The directions and instruction guides and notes in the house are very carefully and thoughtfully arranged - so we were never lost or confused in our movements.
The house is clean and has all you need (and more unexpected very useful things, like a cooler, etc). Everything works perfectly. It has a little of a rustic feeling about it - just what you need when you are away from home! And the tropical garden surrounding the property! Wow. Very private winding entrance. Morning cup of coffee on the lanai!!!! And no clouds of mosquitoes or no-see-ems!
From our home base we could travel all directions with no problem. And we did some travel! Our highlights were Green Sand beach, Volcano park and tide pools to swim with all kinds and sizes of beautiful fish (there we went several times and would keep going if we had more time ).
Thank you Rich for making us feel home!

I was very pleased with the cottage. The website description was very accurate, perhaps too modest in that I found the cottage even nicer than described on the website. The cottage was extraordinarily clean, well maintained and well stocked with bathroom amenities, recreational gear, basic food stuffs, fresh fruit, cookware, printer, computer ink and paper, etc. I thought the location was ideal; it is quite secluded, yet close (5 minutes or so) to the Pahoa farmer's market and a good grocery store in Kea'au, 20 minutes from Hilo and 30 minutes from Volcano National Park. Although I only had occasion to communicate with Richard a couple of times for courtesy purposes (everything worked so well and the information he provided about the cottage and area was so comprehensive I had no need to call him for help or advice), each time I did he responded promptly. I highly recommend this place and hope to spend considerably more time there this summer or fall.
