The Cottage at Ohia Grove is a quirky, cozy cabin nestled in the corner of our private four-acre park-like grounds. If your idea of an ideal vacation is time spent reading an engrossing novel...enjoying lazy afternoons naps…taking trips to view interesting natural wonders … exploring steam vents and tidal pools… poking around a farmers’ market…sampling the cuisine at nearby restaurants... or just playing a rousing game of Scrabble, then we invite you to consider a stay at the Cottage at Ohia Grove.
If you’re looking for four-star amenities and appointments, this is not the place for you; you won’t be happy, and neither will we. But if you’re searching for a vacation rental offering comfortable sleeping and lounging space (including our new screened lanai overlooking the gardens), a convenient location near historic Hilo town, and a price tag that won’t keep you up at night, we just might be what you’re looking for! The Cottage is perfect for week-long vacations, island hopping, house-hunting or property development visits, writer's retreats or for anyone who just wants to get away to the tropics.
The Ohia Grove property is four private acres of lush, native Hawaiian fruits, vegetation and, of course, ohia trees (pronounced 'oh-hee'-a,' ). During your stay, we invite you to pick fresh avocados, starfruit, citrus and mangos from our trees, and to enjoy looking at the many wild and cultivated flowers that grow on the grounds.

Don and Rich were frequent visitors to the Big Island for years before we decided to reduce our traveling expenses and just stay here for good! Rich retired after 26 years at Verizon in Washington DC, where he last served as Executive Director of Federal Regulatory Affairs. He can now usually be found puttering around the house or working on his tan at a local beach. Don is an Information Technologies and Networking specialist who has worked for a variety of organizations, including non-profits, a trade union, a major computer graphics company and several consulting firms. In his non-working hours in Hawaii, he likes to garden at Ohia Grove and at our permanent residence around the corner. All of our jobs on the mainland involved extensive travel, so when we set up our vacation rental, we based it on our experiences. We've worked to set up a Cottage that is comfortable, convenient, cozy -- and moderately priced. We hope you'll enjoy your stay and come to love the Big Island as much as we do. Aloha!
The Owner purchased this cottage in 2007
We loved the tropical setting of the four-acre Ohia Grove property, with its many native fruits, flowers and palms. Although it's convenient to Hilo and other area tourist sites, when you're on the property, you feel like you're in your own private tropical garden (and you really are!)
One of property's biggest assets is the sense of privacy - rather than being sandwiched in with other tourists in a busy hotel or B&B, you'll have the Cottage and its four-acre property all to yourselves.
Thank you so much for all the hospitality. (We appreciated) the beautiful yard, fresh fruit and cozy cottage.
This cozy cottage was our base for three nights and we loved it. The sounds were mainly chirping frogs and birds with only the occasional, insecapsble car motor. Rich made sure we had everthting we needed and even did us a favor the morning we left so we could hit more more beach before heading back to the mainland. Thanks and easily recommended.
This little cottage situated in the rain-forest is a nature lovers paradise. The whole house is set up to make you feel like you are living outside with all the amenities of a fully functional house. The windows are open but everything has mosquito screens. The cottage is warm, cosy, quirky and we just fell in love with it. Beautiful fruit basket left for us with papaya and pineapple. We were able to pick any fruit from the gardens and we enjoyed bountiful star fruit, a real treat. The bed was comfy, the kitchen and bathroom very clean with everything you could possibly need and more. We didn't spend any time in the lounge area as the cottage has a fully screened lanai and we spent our evenings out there, with comfy chairs and dining table and listened to the small but exuberant Coqui frogs. Rich and Don were readily available and are a great source of information and advice if you need it. Check out the lava flows that almost swallowed the town of Pahoa at the Transfer Station in 2014.
I arrived at the cottage in the beginning evening hours after a short flight from Oahu to Hilo. Driving up, my sister and I were delighted at the size and layout of the cottage as well as the various amenities provided. I can honestly say the owners took great care in providing all that one could need. Both my sister and I were blown away at how meticulous they were in making sure that my stay was a pleasant one. The photos don't do it justice in conveying how big and nice the cottage really is. Even though I didn't use the kitchen, it was nice to know I had the option to use it if I needed to. It especially was such a delight at having a full size washer and dryer to use during my stay! It meant going home with clean clothes after a 14 day vacation instead of being tired from a five and half hour flight and having to deal with a big pile of dirty laundry the next day. I recall someone mentioning their experience with a rooster and your having it relocated. I did hear the rooster but thankfully very far off in the distance. I found I could mostly tune out the loud Coqui frogs but did have to relocate one that decided to hang out on the back steps. One drawback that couldn't have been foreseen was that on my last evening in the cottage, I had tiny ants coming in by the window next to the bed and over in the kitchen where the bowl of fruit was. Thankfully there was some ant spray which seem to do the trick. One suggestion I would like to make is that it would be nice if one could have the option to close the windows in the bedroom to reduce the noise from the frogs (you cannot do anything about the screen gaps below the windows) as well as possibly put some sort of blinds in the bathroom window and the bedroom. I know it is a secluded place and far from neighbors or the road but I just couldn't get the thought of someone watching at night and so I undressed/dressed in the bathroom. All in all, I would recommend this place to all friends and family. Thank you for providing a very nice place to stay while bouncing all over the Big Island! Mahalo!!
This cottage is absolutely beautiful with a tropical garden. The hosts prepared all we need (with flowers in the house, coffee and fruits) for us. And the location is perfect to discover the volcano, Hilo, Puna, and the east coast of big island.
The cottage is a wonderful place to stay in order to explore the Hilo side of the Big Island! It's one of those rare properties that is actually better in person than what you see in the pictures! Rich and Don are great caretakers of not only the cottage, but of their guests as well. The cottage has all of the amenities you'll need, including a well-stocked and large kitchen, washer and dryer, internet access that never let us down, TV, or the option of ignoring the electronic side of your world and just enjoying all of the sounds of your own piece of a Hawaiian rain forest with a sense of privacy you'll never find in other properties or resorts. It even has an outdoor shower if desired! Easy access to Hilo, Volcano Village and Volcano National Park, as well as the current lava viewing areas along the coast.
Recommended not only for the cottage, but for the hospitality and sense of Aloha that Rich and Don provide! They are there when you need them (as we experienced during the approach and near-miss of Hurricane Madeline!) and are quick to answer any questions or concerns you may have!
Thank You Rich and Don for your generous sense of hospitality, care and local knowledge!
