Travel guides recommend Playa Ocotal to outdoor enthusiasts who want to snorkel from a Guanacaste beach. Guanacaste snorkelers drive many miles to explore the rock formations at both ends of Playa Ocotal Beach. Playa Ocotal's best snorkeling is directly below Los Almendros. On most days, snorkelers see numerous species of colorful, tropical fish in Playa Ocotal's tranquil waters.

Los Almendros de Ocotal enjoys a 'Prime' beachfront location. Most equivalent properties in Guanacaste are owned by large hotels. Los Almendros de Ocotal is preferred by travelers who prefer to stay at a small, less commercial resort. Los Almendros does not require its guests to purchase an 'all inclusive' meal plan. Our guests enjoy dining at local independent restaurants, and the option to occasionally prepare a home cooked meal. Los Almendros guests do not worry about missing pre-paid, scheduled meals. They dine in private restaurants wherever their travels take them.
Playa Ocotal is a very quiet and peaceful beach. The rock formations directly below Los Almendros is one of Guanacaste's most popular locations for snorkeling from shore. Snorkelers routinely see schools of beautiful angel fish, game fish, rays, eels and octopi. We provide our guests good quality snorkeling gear, free of charge.
Relying on feedback from our guests, we continuously add new items for our patrons to enjoy. For example: 1) Playas del Coco has over 30 restaurants. Several of the best restaurants are not easy to find. We provide our guests a free GPS unit. The GPS device is pre-programmed with the location of Coco's best restaurants and Guanacaste's most popular tourist attractions. Our GPS unit recognizes Los Almendros as 'Home'. No matter where you travel in Costa Rica, your GPS unit will provide you the quickest, safest return route to Los Almendros. 2) US and Canadian cell phones require a special chip to function in Costa Rica. When they do work, roaming charges are expensive. We provide our North American guests a cell phone that can be used to make free calls anywhere in Costa Rica. The phone numbers of the Los Almendros office, our General Manager's cell phone, and the number of an English speaking doctor in Coco are pre-programmed. 3) Playa Ocotal offers Guanacaste's best snorkeling. The rock formations directly below Los Almendros is the most popular off-shore snorkeling location in Northern Guanacaste. 4) A popular, reasonably priced, beachfront restaurant is located less than 100 meters from the entrance to Los Almendros. 'Father Rooster's' specializes in seafood and delicious tropical drinks. The 'vegetarian nachos' are a favorite appetizer. 5) Los Almendros has a top rated dive shop on site...Rocket Frog Divers. Guests our entitled to a 10% discount off Rocket Frog's published rates. 6) In addition to world class deep sea fishing, many families enjoy fishing near shore for red snapper. This club offers spa treatments, tennis courts, swimming pools with children slide, exercise machines, yoga classes and Zumba classes.
5 of 5 stars
What a great place! Thank you so much to Stefanie for taking care of us. She helped us plan day trips at a moments notice and was more than accommodating with anything we needed-and we needed a lot! The condo #42 was very nice with breathtaking views of Ocotal. We woke up to monkeys practically on our deck one morning. The pool options were endless and the occasional sight of the howler troop was always exciting. The beach was beautiful-black sand with blue water-amazing! Sunsets were colorful and we loved exploring the rocks at low tide. We saw colorful fish in the tide pools and exotic birds overhead. Not much in the town to do or see-but plenty to see in the surrounding areas if you have a car. It was very hot though otherwise-highly recommended
Loved our 3 nights here diving with rocket frog divers, eating at Fathers Roosters, and relaxing in the condo.
Wonderful unit and a great location. The views are spectacular and the unit is very comfortable. The owners are an absolute pleasure and called us the day we arrived to welcome us. The screened in porch is an amazing place to see monkeys. We would definitely rent this unit again. It's very well equipped.
My husband and I enjoyed our time at the Los Almendros condo. The beach was great - very sparsely populated (maybe 15 people at most at one time in the three days we were there), soft black sand, clear water, and good snorkeling. It's only about a 5 minute walk, although coming back up the hill is a little bit of a challenge. We especially appreciated the snorkeling equipment that Gail had available at her condo for us to use. After a long drive there (from the Arenal area), we appreciated just being able to walk down the beach to Father Rooster's for dinner. The condo itself was exactly as described. The air conditioners worked great, and we especially enjoyed being able to sit on the screened-in porch with the view of the beach. Our biggest disappointment is outside of the owner's control - we did not see a single monkey during our stay! I wish we would have had another day or two because we never did get to try the kayaks.
My families experience at los alamendos was very good. The beach is a 5 min walk down the road in the development or u can drive down the hill. The condo itself was clean and well furnished. We had a miscommunication on the cots but the owner attentively took care of it! The area is pretty quite but a five min drive to cocco for restaurants , bars , shops, and supermarkets was nice. People are friendly and we felt safe! The only negative was the weather and my wife and I got sick. If I were to go back I'd try to go in the dry season we went in the green season and had a decent amount of rain. The owners of the condo also belong to the club so you can use there amenities pool gym etc. it was a nice place 5 min drive from the condo. Also the beach may look dirty but the sand is actually black. Different experience the water was warm clear and calm though. Screened in porch at night was also a plus nice view to the left.
We chose this VRBO for the location. It did not disappoint. We stayed for 5 nights with our 7 & 9 year old boys.
It is approximately 2 minute walk down a moderately steep hill to the beach (but that is what gives you a view from the porch). The sand was soft black sand (not dirty, nor hot). The beach was very private and the tide very calm. My 9 year old snorkeled w/o a life vest (although he is a good swimmer). Were able to see quite a few fish...not the best snorkeling in the world, but that is not what CR is known for, nonetheless, the snorkeling was as good as I expected it to be in CR.
The home was clean and comfortable. The A/C worked well. Monkeys came to the tree near our porch. We had no trouble with using the local phone or binoculars left in the safe. Having access to the washing machine was great.
Closest swimming pool is across the street (smaller one, but good for kids)---there are others that you have access to. Larger, nicer pool at entrance to the condo complex (part of Club at Coco) and kids really liked this pool. We went to this pool (could walk here) every day and always had the pool to ourselves and could smell the wonderful foods at Father Roosters (which is just in front). Also saw birds and monkeys while at this pool.
We enjoyed Father Roosters, which was walk-able. Food was good for both adults and kids.
20 minute drive to Diamante to go to an Adventure Park (we rode ATVs and Zip Lined). Less than 10 minute drive to Coco where you can go to grocery store (prices not far off from USA) and more restaurants.
The owners were very responsive to any questions I had before I arrived and after I got there.
I felt very safe here at day and night.
I would recommend having a car, but it is not necessary, just depends on what your agenda is. You can easily get a cab to go to Coco (go to restaurant, grocery). But if you want to do day trips, a car would be easiest, we drove a good part of the country before coming here and did not feel at all intimidated by the driving in this country.
For the price, this location was great and I would recommend it to others.
The owner is very sweet and helpful. She definitely tries to do a great job with what she has and in many ways is successful. She does have a GPS, local cell phone, binoculars, etc.
The bad and ugly:
Perhaps it is just me, but I found Playa Ocatel and the entire Coco Beach area to be a total dump. Playa Ocotal is a combination of black/grey sand, really dirty if you ask me, no beach lounge chairs, no services, a dump.
You 100% need a car if you stay at this condo. The Father Rooster bar and grill (think Bennigans or Applebee's on the beach) is very walkable but they don't have breakfast and how many times can you eat chicken wings or ribs?
The owner also has everything under lock and key-- literally the TV has a huge chain around it (never seen that before). In speaking with a few people, it seems that in Costa Rica generally and in this area specifically, crime is rampant so I guess that is why there are so many chains, barb wires, locks, etc. Not my scene.
The couple of pools in the condo complex are average at best and they do have a "club" that offers another pool with an infinity edge but the "club" doesn't even serve water--really a joke, oh and the infinity edge barely sees the ocean.
The single worst thing about this old tired unit is the bedding. The mattress is a total joke, it is like trying to sleep on a pool table. The bed "creaks". It is so bad that we actually left for four nights and went to a hotel (a five star hotel about three hours south) so I could sleep on vacation--that property is a gem unlike this dump in Los Almendros.
If you have the misfortune to stay here you'll be totally isolated. Monteverde is a three plus hour drive from hell to get to, there are really no nice beaches anywhere close (we did find a beach called "Carillo" that is lovely but is three hours away.
The condo is old and tired. I would guess it was built in perhaps 1980 or so and it looks it. There has been some updating but to advertise this as "luxurious" is misleading IMHO. This is most decidedly NOT a "luxury property" it really is a dump.
My final thought is that I hated this place as much because I really hate Costa Rica. Not a half mile from this dumpy condo is a complete gheto, you really are in a third world country--with the worst roads ever. Nothing "luxurious" about it. If you like dumps, horrible roads, horrible food, horrible weather, a beach with no amenities then this is the place for you. Not for me.
Los Almendros is 30 min. from the Liberia Airport, 5 min. from vibrant Playas del Coco and 60 minutes from two of Costa Rica's finest national parks. Our central Guanacaste location provides convenient access to activities in both the Northern and Southern parts of the province. Playa Ocotal is a protected 'Blue Flag' beach. It is a perfect beach for snorkelers and families with children. On most days, the surf is very gentle. Ocotal has no dangerous rip tides. Snorkelers are able to see and enjoy numerous species of colorful fish, eels and rays. Children spend hours exploring the tide pools directly below Los Almendros. The tide pools contain hundreds of small, colorful fish that get trapped by the changing tide.
The above rates do not include Costa Rica's 13% hotel tax.
Maid service is provided once per week. Clean towels are available upon request.
