This spectacular property is just a few minutes drive and a 20 minute walk away from downtown Atenas. It features a gorgeous home on 20 acres of private land with lush tropical gardens, orchards, streams and breathtaking views. You can pick bananas by the swimming pool, caimito by the front gate, mangoes along the drive and oranges, lemons, water apple, papaya and cashews in the orchard. From the verandas and other magical spots on the property there are superb views, including Poas volcano and the Central Valley. There are plenty of interesting walks in the neighborhood but just walking the property itself is an adventure in a tropical paradise. There is a varied population of wildlife, especially birds which, interestingly, can best be viewed from the pool area!!
The three bedroom main residence features vaulted ceilings, hand crafted hardwood windows, ceilings and doors. Huge wrap-around verandas, totally private swimming pool and all modern conveniences. The bathrooms were renovated in 2015 and the beds and sofa set are all new. Internet, satellite TV provided. The house is located in Mercedes, one of the most desirable areas around Atenas characterized by large properties and friendly local people.
There is a helpful gardener and his wife who live in the gatehouse by the road, a considerable distance from the main house, ensuring immediate assistance and yet total privacy.
Atenas is just a 25 minute drive to the San Jose airport. If you don't want to rent a car it is very easy just to take a cab to the house and call a cab to shop or travel around the area. There are several supermarkets in town and a wide variety of interesting local shops, restaurants and coffee houses to explore. Many people speak English and always ready to get more practice but also patient and friendly if you wish to practice perhaps not-so-perfect Spanish! The local property managers (Piet and Yvonne) are available to organize trips, car rental, give local advice and organize airport pickup if required plus answer any questions you may have during your stay.
My name is Tonia and I am Belgian. I have been living in the US for 28 years but am a world traveler at heart. I like nature and natural things, which is one of the reasons why I chose Atenas in Costa Rica as a second home. The area is unspoiled and yet there is a pleasant town nearby. Excessive heat and humidity don't agree with me and the climate in Atenas is perfect, warm but not stifling, cool but not cold.
If I could be there all the time I would but alas I have other commitments. So at least others can enjoy the property - and this makes me feel good!
TONIA purchased this house in 2008
Atenas is situated in the low mountains, where the coffee grows. It is famous in Costa Rica and abroad for its near ideal climate: warm and comfortable during the day and cool at night. This property was an expression of my dream to live peacefully, surrounded by nature, in a house that has soul. It has privacy, yet is close to town. It is important to understand that, unlike many rental properties, this is not just a house and pool. It is a gorgeous private estate with a river, woods, views, fruit trees, wildlife and an extraordinary variety of exotic birds. Considering the price of rentals in other areas of Costa Rica and other parts of the world, this property offers extraordinary value. It offers nature on the doorstep with the privacy of a large property. Our managers tell us that guests express delight upon arrival and their expectations are always exceeded.
Unique in Atenas: spectacular home on a giant piece of landscaped tropical paradise with incredible views. It has complete privacy, varied terrain, tranquility and endless beauty. For bird watchers the property is especially appealing for the amazing variety of tropical birds. You can get an inexpensive taxi or drive yourself to town in a matter of minutes but we take every opportunity we can to walk and enjoy the local atmosphere. The complete privacy does not mean you have to go far for amenities: two local restaurants are within minutes' walk and serve local dishes including super good ceviche.
What you will most appreciate is the peace, natural beauty, lush gardens, wildlife, fresh air and comfort of a beautiful home.
A Week in Paradise!

From the minute Tonia answered my request for info, I knew that our visit to this beautiful home just outside of Atenas was going to be a great experience. Having never been to Costa Rica, my friends and I wanted to rent a home which would allow us to be centrally located. We wanted to be able to get into town easily, enjoy a pool at the home, take day trips to volcanoes, parks, and beaches around the country, have access to someone who could escort us to the best sites, and to stay in a comfortable home. Colina Paula fit the bill perfectly. Tonia was incredibly helpful arranging for a driver to pick us up at the SanJose Airport, even suggesting to him (and to us via email) that he stop at a 'supermercado' so that we could purchase groceries and spirits before heading to her home. Arriving at Colina Paula, we found the website photos to be entirely accurate but still not able to capture the natural beauty of the tree/tropical plant/pasture-covered property. The house itself is most aptly described as classy and comfortable; the woodworking has been done by a master craftsman. Laid out for optimal views of gorgeous mountains and volcanoes in the distance and cross-breezes to enjoy in the house or on the wrap-around patio, the house is in an ideal location to enjoy cooking dinner on the huge gas grill, sipping coffee on the patio, swimming in the immaculately maintained pool steps from the house, and relaxing. Tonia's care for the house carries over to her care for her guests, having suggested and arranged for us to contact Walter, a tour van owner, to take us on incredible day trips that allowed. While we loved spending our mornings on the patio over breakfast we made in the well stocked kitchen, we were just as eager to wander into town feeling like Atenas natives, enjoy a massage on the beach, or try a challenging zipline. We sadly said goodbye but we will surely return.
We absolutely loved the house, the garden and the service. Thank you!
We (two couples in our seventies) have just returned from a two-week stay at Colina Paula. We enjoyed the house and the pool, which are exactly as described in the listing. Lovely house with great views, beautiful master suite and well-equipped kitchen. We especially appreciated the supply of spices, and the wonderful fresh fruit that Emilio the gardener brought - bananas and oranges fresh from the garden, - so we made good use of the provided juicer for our morning OJ! Property manager!Piet was very helpful and provided great transfers to and from the airport, and Marian of Bunki Tours was a wonderful driver and tour guide for our trips to Poas volcano and La Paz Waterfall Gardens and even tried to get us in to the railway museum, which unfortunately was only open on weekends. As seniors, with one of us recovering from a recent knee replacement, we found the terrain around the house challenging… it is on a fairly steep hill, but we made good use of the local inexpensive taxi service for our trips to town and back. Loved the pool, and were thrilled to be lucky enough to see a pair of toucans in the garden one day.
I rented this home for my family for ten days in January. It was just what we were hoping for, and the perfect size for my family of 5. We rented a car and used it as a central base to sight see throughout the country - It is within an hour or two of everything we hope the see. The weather was just perfect the entire week, and my kids spent a portion of every day in the pool. If we return to Costa Rica, we would happily stay here again.
We had the pleasure of spending 10 days at Colina Paula. The location is great because you are on a very private location. The pool in large enough for kids to have plenty of room to play and swim. The property is very tropical and has lots of birds and wildlife. Morning was always welcomed by opening up all the doors and having breakfast outside on the porch; in fact during our entire visit we never ate inside the house because the outside was so inviting. After breakfast we walked to the property to enjoy the view with the two dogs that reside with the caretaker - they are so well trained and added to our time there. Every evening we would sit outside and watch two kinds of bats wing their way through the trees catching bugs (not near us). We never had any issue with bugs so we credit the bats. The home is well decorated and very comfortable. Of all the properties we have rented through VRBO, this was the best because unlike most rentals they left the spices and other such items in place. Piet, the property manager, was great to work with and made it easy for us to check in and out. The only downsides are that the driveway is steep - so be brave and stay in low gear and Atenas is repairing the water system so some evenings the water would be off for a few hours. Pretty minor stuff and it added to the experience. The house is a mile or so from town but even if you didn't have a car the taxi is cheap. There is a great Tico restaurant/bar about 400 yards down the road. We hope to stay in the home again!
Colina Paula was perfect for our family because it is secluded from the road and neighbors, making it an ideal place to relax. The pool was lovely and we went for several swims each day, starting first thing in the morning. The house was spacious and well appointed. The location was ideal for us - close enough to town but far enough out to avoid all noise and commotion. The bar/restaurant down the road had great food for great prices and their caipirinhas were to die for.
My family spent two weeks at Colina Paula and had a spectacular time! My daughter loved the pool and I loved waking up every morning at sunrise, opening the double doors on both sides of the house and enjoying a cup of Costa Rican coffee in the rocking chair. The location was convenient to downtown Atenas. We took white cabs to and from the city - cost only around $3 American one way. We got connected with Bunki Tours and took three personal tours led by Marian and Aad; ziplining, Toledo coffee plantation tour, Poas volcano and Waterfall Gardens. All trips were excellent and much nicer than going on a bus with a bunch of other tourists. The caretakers, Piet and Yvonne, were very accommodating. Piet was willing to pick us up from the airport at 1:15am. We will certainly visit Costa Rica again and will likely stay at Colina Paula! Thanks!
