About the property

Cottage, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6-8)

This magical retreat in a wooded setting has picturesque old world charm reminiscent of an Italian Alpine cottage.

Red Gate Cottage, situated on a knoll in Beaverdam Valley, is a vintage log cabin faced with stone. Semiskilled craftsmen working over decades, using stone and antique brick, produced an effect that makes the cottage resemble an ancient stone house in the Alps. The original log walls inside have been restored and preserved.

The luxury renovation by the Architect/Owner features high pine-faced cathedral ceilings throughout. The river stone fireplace is a focal point where people enjoy gathering to watch movies and cable HDTV or to just soak up the relaxing atmosphere. It's a great venue for romantic couples, friends and family groups to celebrate holidays and special occasions.

A hot tub on the stone patio, cradled by massive rock walls, rests under a vine-draped pergola. Beyond, a sunken garden has blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and fresh herbs to use in the gourmet kitchen, and a fire pit for roasting marshmallows.

From the deck, you can enjoy close mountain views as you dine or sit around a blazing fire in the chiminea. Relax in the hammock, and listen to the sounds of the abundant wild life mingling with those of barnyard animals from nearby farms. Flocks of wild turkeys wander by. Guests recently saw a total of eight black bears (including 4 cubs) during their 10-day stay.

Peaceful and quiet, the cottage is within 10 minutes of the center of Asheville with its many world class restaurants, year-round live entertainment, museums, art galleries, theaters, concert halls, and large exhibitions at the Civic Center. Golfing, rafting, fly fishing and horseback riding are among the local attractions, as well as the Grove Park Inn and the famed Biltmore Estate.

Other nearby activities include spas, YMCA, dancing, yoga, live music, great shops, coffee houses, farmers markets, NC University activities, and the Nature Center. Asheville is an antique hunter’s paradise, and the River Arts District (more than 80 artists’ studios) produces some of the best art in America. Shoppers will love the boutiques and specialty shops. A 24-hour grocery store is 5 minutes away, and there are many gourmet shops – the Greenlife Market is not to be missed!

The NC University (UNCA) campus is just minutes away. Black Mountain is within 30 minutes, and Lake Lure, Chimney Rock Park and Wolf Laurel Ski Resort are all within 45 minutes. Mt. Mitchell, highest mountain in the Eastern U.S., is an hour’s drive up the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The scenic Beaverdam Valley meanders past the country club golf course en route to the spectacular high mountains of the Blue Ridge Parkway – where you can enjoy hiking, mountain biking and scenic drives. Yet the fantastic restaurants and night life of Asheville are only a few minutes away.

At Red Gate Cottage, you can enjoy both town and country, truly the best of both worlds. So bring the children, bring the dog. Here, you can get away from it all but still stay in touch by telephone (free long distance) and high speed wireless internet.

Fantastic rustic cortage

  • 5 of 5

We had a weekend in Asheville with two teenagers and it was a wonderful experience. Georgia couldn't have been more accommodating and we loved everything about the house.

It really is only minutes away from downtown Asheville and there are supermarkets and such very convenient to the property while still feeling like we are out of town.

Amazing mountain getaway

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing stay at the Red Gate Cottage. The house is well furnished and the kitchen is adequately stocked. Communication with the host was easy and all logistical needs were met prior to our arrival. The cottage is well situated to major breweries in asheville. The cottage comfortably held six adults without issue. We loved the multitude of outdoor seating and the level of privacy that the cottage provides. We look forward to staying here again.

Wonderful respite during the holidays

  • 5 of 5

Completely spotless, this beautiful cottage had everything we could want. Close to everything, yet quiet and private. Well stocked with everything we could think of, and it truly is a beautiful home. We loved it, give it the highest rating. Oh, and when we arrived...a big plate of cookies and a lovely bottle of wine awaited us. Very gracious host, and we thank her so very much. We will certainly be returning!!

Wonderful, relaxing stay

  • 5 of 5

Georgia is the perfect hostess-she had everything perfect for my arrival including a bottle of wine and delicious cookies. There was even a special treat for my dog! I truly appreciate the warmth and hospitality shown. Special blankets, toys, and even food dishes were provided for my dog. A book with recommendations on the area and a history of the home helped me plan my stay.

I stayed the week prior to Thanksgiving and the air quality was excellent, a concern given the recent fires. The skies were blue and clear, the trees were turning colors-it was perfect. I was able to hike DuPont Forest, the Arboretum, and other trails with no problem. The city is wonderful, lots of great shops and restaurants. The property itself is cozy and beautiful with a somewhat European feel. The area felt very safe and was perfect. Remote enough to feel like I was in the country but only 5-10 miles to downtown. Twin Leaf Brewery, Limones, Asheville Brewing Co, and DuPont Forest are a few of my favorite places I was able to visit. I highly recommend the Red Gate Cottage.

Exceeded Expectations!

  • 5 of 5

Five long time friends traveled to Asheville for a girls weekend away. Our stay at Red Gate Cottage was fantastic. Our hostess provided lots of information about Asheville before our arrival and was very accommodating in every way. The location was perfect. We were within a 5 to 10 minute drive to downtown and other attractions. After several hours of touring, dining and being out and about we'd find ourselves saying, "Let's go home." Yes, the cozy stone fireplace, outdoor space with hot tub and chiminea, and the hostess touches like providing coffee, spices, home baked cookies, a bottle of wine and other amenities made this cottage feel like home. We hope to return soon.
