Our spacious and luxurious 2-level home in the Berkeley hills is roomy, comfortable, full of light and a pleasure to live in for up to five people. It's cozy in the winter and cool and pleasant in the summer. We have decks on each level and an additional private one for the master bath. The rental includes weekly housekeeping.
The beautiful living room has two comfortable sofas to curl up in while watching the hawks floating on air currents over the canyon across the road, as well as cozy armchairs, well-chosen art, and a wood-burning fireplace.
The canyon view is also what you see from the large comfortable dining room that seats six to seven around a custom round dining table, in cushy upholstered chairs that you won't want to leave after dinner. Smaller chairs are available that can allow eight to dine at the table.
The large eat-in kitchen seats six. They can keep the cook company while he/she uses the high quality cooking tools and appliances to cook fresh food from the nearby Monterey Market, famous Monterey Fish Company and others of Berkeley's astounding array of provisioners. The kitchen's French doors open to a private deck with table and chairs for dining surrounded by climbing roses. Take a book out here and relax on the couch or in the antique steamer chair while looking at the garden and terrace below.
Enjoy the enormous master bedroom/sitting room with its king-size bed furnished with high thread count linens, the sofa in front of the wood-burning fireplace, the antique armoire and the three sets of French doors opening the entire room to the garden terrace.
There's plenty of room in the walk-in closet and drawers for all your own things; no trying to work around the owner's possessions. There's also a TV if you like to watch TV in bed.
The sybaritic master bath is newly remodeled and you will think you have wandered into a Four Seasons Hotel bathroom when you see the soaking tub, the large walk-in shower and its own completely private adjacent deck. You can luxuriate in the tub with candles lit while allowing the fresh breeze in from the deck.
The second bedroom is furnished with an extremely comfortable queen-size bed, a settee, and plenty of storage. It has a view of treetops and a glimpse of the lights of San Francisco in the distance. There is a full bath adjacent.
The pretty and cozy book-filled library/TV room has a music system and a flat-screen TV with cable and DVD player.
For working at home, there's a large office with 2 desks, a file cabinet, 2 printers and a fax, and of course there's wi-fi throughout the house. Internet and wi-fi is included in the rental cost. A single bed can be installed in this room if needed, allowing the house to sleep 5 people.
A laundry room with washer/dryer is inside the house. The house has a monitored security system. We supply you with excellent quality linens, kitchenware and tableware.
Our housekeeper comes to clean weekly at no extra charge.
Our street is very quiet, with little traffic, but is conveniently located for all your needs. Solano Avenue, a major shopping street with 2 supermarkets, a movie theater, a Peet's, a Starbucks, independent cafes, a drugstore, Noah's Bagels and many other shops and restaurants is 1/2 mile away.
We are within easy distance of UC Berkeley: you may walk or bike or take the direct bus which stops one block from the house. A direct bus to San Francisco stops one block away as well. BART rapid transit station is also close by.

We are a couple who have lived in this house for most of our married life and love to travel, collecting art and furniture as we go. In a previous career I was an interior designer and the house was my favorite project. Now that we're retired we are spending some time traveling and have decided to make the house available to others who would enjoy it as we do.
Shelli Oreck purchased this house in 1976
We came to Berkeley years ago to go to school and loved it so much we never left. It has everything one could want: beauty, convenience, cultural opportunities, outdoor activities, proximity to the big city and the country, and of course great food.
Over the years we have upgraded the house to an extremely high standard and are proud to share it with others who care about their surroundings.
Our house is calm, private and relaxing while giving us nearly immediate access to everything San Francisco and the wine country offer.
This was my first rental on home away and let's just say everything was more than perfect. The owners were very cordial and walked me through the process. Upon arrival I was shown around the home and told of local things to do and places to eat. It was above and beyond. It truly felt like home away from home. Peaceful neighborhood and close to major attractions! Many thanks. Look forward to another time.
Our stay at this lovely home in the North Berkeley hills exceeded expectations. We were sorry to leave! The furnishings are luxurious but comfortable and the artwork is fabulous (how wonderful that it's displayed for all to enjoy). Owner is obviously a foodie as kitchen is well stocked, with several sets of dishes to choose from. Downstairs master retreat (including sitting area and fireplace) is warm and welcoming. Outdoor space is perfect for morning coffee or afternoon glass of wine. Housekeeper is gracious and helpful -- home is impeccable. Use of car was an added bonus. I hope to find a reason for a future stay!
My husband, daughter and I stayed here for almost 2 months while waiting to move into our new house. It was an absolute pleasure living at 511 The Alameda. The house is large, sunny, comfortable and filled with wonderful art. The kitchen is well appointed, the linens clean and comfortable, the outside deck so relaxing. The house is in a wonderful location for walks and only a short drive to the best parts of Berkeley. The spa bath was a real treat! We had a problem free stay- everything is in good working order and the housekeeper can answer any questions you may have. I loved the French accents. I would very happily rent this house again!
I highly recommend this beautiful home in the Berkeley hills. The decor is exceptional, and every room is extremely comfortable. The well equipped kitchen is perfect for cooking and dining. The neighborhood is charming and quiet. We didn't want to leave!
We stayed at this lovely house while visiting friends in Berkeley. We did quite a bit of entertaining while we were there and the kitchen had everything we needed for cooking, as well as a great selection of dishes and placemats, candlesticks, etc. The double decks were great for a birthday party that we hosted.
The master bathroom has a huge tub and a walk in shower that was fun and when it was a little cool we used the romantic fireplace in the bedroom.
All in all, this was a comfortable and pleasant home away from home for us. We would stay here again.
Wonderfully decorated house. Everything in good shape. Friendly and helfpul landlord and landlady. Quiet and lovely neighborhood.
I recommend the house without any hesitation.
Movie theaters and several legitimate theaters are within minutes of the house, Berkeley's great restaurants (Chez Panisse, for example) are within walking distance, wine tasting and/or beaches are less than an hour away, wind-surfing, hiking, lectures, university classes, are all available within minutes. Whatever your interests, you can enjoy them easily.
