Our house is located in the colonial neighborhood of calle del Espiritu Santo, six blocks from the central park of La Antigua and five minutes walk of the colorful bounty of the town’s produce and artisan market. It is a gracious, corner house on a tranquil cul-de-sac, with views of the surrounding volcanoes and the enjoyment of flowering gardens, fruit trees, and birdsong.
Modern, spacious, the four-bedroom, family-style house is a relaxed blend of Guatemalan and American styles, with modern conveniences, and a delightful a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces. The house is a recent purchase for us and we have enjoyed some stunning renovations and adding photographs and local color. The house sleeps 6 people; an extra fee is charged for up 2 additional people to cover utilities and service.
First floor: A welcoming entrance hall opens into a large living room with glassed doors to outdoor veranda, formal dining room seating eight, and fully equipped modern kitchen, and bathroom with shower. From the kitchen, access to laundry and dryer, outdoor traditional “pila” or washing room, and outside kitchen garden. Gracious shaded veranda with relaxing chairs and hammock leads into gardens with lion’s-head fountain and to the two additional gardens beyond.
Second floor: Off an upstairs landing are the master bedroom with king-sized bed and private bath (tub and shower), two bedrooms with twin beds, and a third bedroom with queen-sized bed; the latter share a bathroom with shower. An all-weather, glassed-in sunroom leads off the fourth bedroom. Both the master bedroom and fourth bedroom open onto the outdoor upstairs patio for morning coffee, sunning, and evening cocktails. All rooms are all spacious and sunny, with high ceilings and tiled floors.
Gardens/outdoor spaces: Within the walled compound are easy spaces for reading in the hammock, sculpting or painting in the garden, hanging laundry in the sun, a game of basketball or croquet, as well as ample garage space for one car or van. The house veranda leads directly onto a formal garden with fountain (lit at night) and a small kitchen garden near the back/kitchen door to the house. Through a lovely garden gate is a basketball court, ping pong table and a back garden where we are nurturing fruit trees, more flowers and birds.
Other Conveniences: Wireless Internet, fully equipped kitchen, gas stove, washer and dryer, DVD player, house phone. The house has its own water cistern and filter. Part-time services of talented housekeeper for general cleaning and enthusiastic gardener are included. Our house manager is fastidious about welcoming and orienting guests and taking care of guests questions or needs as they arise. We couldn't be luckier to have such a great team.
We have dreamt about spending more time in Guatemala for 30 years, since Susanna first traveled here to study traditional textiles and Scott worked here as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the mid-1970s. Now that our children are older, we decided to put down roots. We purchased this easy, spacious house in a quiet neighborhood, and have enjoyed renovations to add comfort and art, and we purchased an additional empty lot to expanding the gardens so we could pick our own avocados and fruit in the backyard!
Scott is a sculptor and Susanna volunteers with Safe Passage/Camino Seguro and pursues interests in the Ixil Region of northern El Quiche Department. Her new guidebook is called 'Guatemala Journey Among the Ixil Maya' -- for sale and bookstores in Guatemala.
Scott Stoll and Susanna Place purchased this house in 2008
This particular neighborhood, at the south-western side of Antigua, is quiet, well-maintained, and just beyond the constant swirl of dust and noise of central Antigua. It remains very easy walking distance to the central park, restaurants, and the market -- where we shop for produce on an almost daily basis. We deliberately did not choose a gated community, and enjoy daily exchanges with our neighbors --a mix of Guatemalans and expatriates -- who socialize regularly and actively attend to neighborhood developments. It really feels like home and not just a vacation rental.
Huge gardens, room for kids to play ball or ping-pong, a variety of spots for sunbathing, reading in the hammock, yoga, listening to the birdsong, and viewing the magnificent surrounding landscape.
I had been to Antigua before, so knew where I wanted to be. I recently rented the house for 2 weeks. I had no idea that we would enjoy a perfect package in renting this special place. The house, and the wonderful people who care for it are amazing ! Jose (house manager)picked us up at the airport and had a very comfortable Mercedes mini van.(ask for pricing - i recommend this service) He is lovely and a great driver. He took us to Chichicastenango twice-a must see (in my opinion). Jose was a great resource for local places to visit. Anna cooked us wonderful meals and made our long days fantastic. We hiked Pecaya and came home to a meal of Chili Rellenos! So nice.
Location was just where we wanted to be-close enough to be in the city when we wanted to be there and far enough on a quiet street to sleep and enjoy the garden without noise.
It is good for a family or group of friends. There is plenty of space to spread out-my favorite was the upstairs sun room when storms moved in.
The house lacks nothing. The pictures don't do it justice! It was fabulous. It is in a perfect location and has everything you need (wifi and washer dryer!). We were just blocks away from the Artisan Market-yet it was very quiet. I will go back with my family and friends.
I highly recommend the house and the owners. It all went as smoothly as could be.,
We had an amazing time in Antigua during our stay in November 2015. The house was so comfortable and the gardens were beautiful. It was great to have such a wonderful place to return to each evening after our days walking and sightseeing. Jose was terrific in showing us around the house and Ana and the gardener worked on their days at the house to keep the place lovely. The garden was full of hummingbirds, beautiful flowers and foliage along with limes, avocados, herbs and oranges. It was a little paradise in the middle of Antigua.
It was such a great location as well so that we could walk easily to the amazing La Antigua market or to La Bodegona to shop for beer, wine, and foods that were not available in the market.
We had great meals at El Fondo del Calle Real, Don Carlos on Calle Cinco and other wonderful restaurants in the city.
The weather was a little iffy but we only got caught in rain once. The days mostly stayed cloudy so we did not have great views of the volcanoes except for the day my father and law and I played golf at La Reunion. That was a really special round of golf. But the town is so full of sights that the gray skies did not get in the way.
Jose's friend Marvin picked us up at the airport and dropped us off without a hitch. Our trip to Tikal was amazing. We also spent part of a day at the Filadelfia coffee plantation which almost converted my mother-in-law from tea to coffee. So many things to see in Antigua. We saw a lot but there is still so much to experience.
The six of us were so happy for the chance to stay in this beautiful house. Hopefully we will have an opportunity to do it again soon.
Casa #3 is perfect in every way. My husband, 7 year old daughter, 5 year old son and I spent a fabulous 4 weeks in Guatemala with Casa #3 as our home base. It is even more beautiful and spacious than the pictures. The location is stellar, conveniently located in a quiet and safe neighborhood only a few blocks from the mercado and bus terminal and a short walk to the parque central. The owners and the staff were warm and helpful from the day we booked the rental through our departure. This is a terrific place to explore the beauty and culture of Guatemala. We miss it already.
Super awesome beautiful home with lovely decorations and lots of hot water not far from mercado central and parque central. Super quiet tranquil street. We can't wait to go back again.
This house was all we hoped for and much more. It comfortably housed 8 people and was so well stocked with everything we needed. The owners, manager and housekeeper were super attentive and helpful. The house, gardens, patio and sunroom are beautiful! Definitely a place we want to return to.
