15 minutes from Lucca 'Casa Berti' is a handsome 17th century villa that is, first and foremost, an unusually well-appointed private family house, reached by a track that winds up from the village church. The views are exceptional, even by Italian standards.
Set in 6 hectares of olive terraces, gardens and a freshwater spring, it is a villa of rare charm and peacefulness with its own farmhouse, artist’s studio , swimming pool and private chapel.
The villa itself sleeps 10 guests. The farmhouse is near the main house, and available for a further 6 guests. Families are welcome and children well provided for. Villa: 4 beautiful king size doubles, 1 gorgeous twin bedroom. Brand new Air conditioning, 3D TV, Falcon range cooker and Miele and Gaggenau appliances, etc.
The villa has been restored with integrity and authenticity. Its lofty interior spaces - high ceilings, large and numerous windows and double doors - mark Casa Berti as a true villa. The thick walls ensure a cool interior even in the height of summer, and throughout there is relaxed refinement. A terracotta-tiled terrace, lined with lemon trees, leads onto a shaded pergola with a large travertine table and iron chairs. In summer this is, in effect, an outdoor living and dining room. A gas grill makes outdoor cooking simple and there is a wood-burning, traditional pizza oven by the farmhouse. An evening of pizza-making is great fun for all ages.
Above the villa the three-bedroom farmhouse, simpler yet charming, provides sleeping for a further five people. It is self-contained, with a small kitchen and seating area.
The swimming pool (10 x 6m, with shallow end and Roman steps), is set just below the villa on a separate, deep terrace. Sheltered and with all-day sun, it has sweeping views of the valley. A second simpler pergola provides shade. There are luxury Gaze Burvill pool loungers.
Casa Berti is a great place from which to explore northern Tuscany, but once here you may not want to leave...

The villa has bee recently renovated to a very high standard and is my much loved family home.
Mr Ben Gooder purchased this villa in 1997
We wanted somewhere secluded, with reliably-lovely weather during the summer months that could be a home away from home for all of us. Casa Berti, with its warmth and tranquility, answered all our needs. We have invested much time, love and money in making the house comfortable, practical and beautiful.
Our house is one of the most tranquil places I know. It is set above the small village and church. There are wooded hills all around the property with endless walks and stunning views. It is lovely to be there at any time of year and the property is within easy reach of the cultural centres of Tuscany. The house itself offers plenty of diversions for rainy days (Wifi, Snooker, table tennis, games and, TV) as well as for sunshine. The kitchen is very well equipped because we all like cooking. It is decorated and furnished as a family home, not just as a rental property. We hope that you would love it as much as we do.
This is the one place we never want to leave. Thank you Casa Berti for another wonderful holiday.
To spend a week on a property that had something to offer for all regardless of age. Just great. Peace and quiet, but still not far from various places of interest - including the Mediterranean.
However, top character could have been reached by providing air conditioning also in the farm house, but that did not take away the feeling of a true luxurious vacation for all.
We really enjoyed our time at Casa Berti. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. The pool was sparkling and welcoming on the warm summer days. We especially love the large stone outdoor dining table overlooking the pool and the valley. The bedrooms and bathrooms are large, bedding extremely comfortable and the kitchen well stocked with kitchen utensils, dishes and many spices.
The owner Ben is a supremely gracious gentleman and very fun to interact with as well. He is quick to help whenever you need recommendations for places to see or directions in the area.
Thanks for the memories, we look forward to returning again!
Casa Berti surpassed all our expectations. The pictures do not do justice to the spectacular views on all sides. The bedrooms are beautifully finished with expensive bed linen and super comfortable beds. It feels like a much loved home and we felt very much at home in this extraordinary place.
We brought family and friends to Casa Berti to share in our love and happiness following our Italian wedding. We could not have chosen a better place! The beauty, tranquillity, and overall marvelousness of your home cannot be exaggerated. We spent our week hiking, running, swimming, cooking, eating, conversing, playing games and reading, debating, and visiting the beautiful Lucca and Pisa. Our group came from Marseille and Paris, New York City, Malibu, California, and Denver Colorado. All of us thank you with all of our hearts for creating and sharing such a lovely place.
Historic towns of Lucca, Pisa and Florence are within an hour, spa towns of Bagni di Lucca and San Giuliano Terme are also nearby. Direct access to excellent woodland walks, superb hiking along well-marked walking routes in the national parks of the Alpi Apuane and Garfagnana. Stunning gorge (Orrido di Botri), river swimming, marble quarries, medieval hilltop towns, rock climbing, wine routes and great cycling (road and off-road). On the coast, there are boat-trips to Elba and the Cinque Terre, the artistic centre of Pietrasanta, and Forte dei Marmi, the heart of the Italian Riviera. Excellent skiing at Abetone in winter (75 mins) and there are several golf courses nearby.
Festivals: Lucca Rock Festival (July), Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago (July to August), various local celebrations of chestnuts and fungi porcini in the Autumn.
