Born and raised in Halifax, our large and rambunctious family spent every summer at our cottage in nearby Southwest Cove. Dad gave all 10 kids a couple acres and we built homes here.(So I can say I have spent all my tender 59 years in the area) When my husband, Kelly first talked about purchasing our rental property I thought he had lost his mind but slowly he convinced me that it was a good investment and eventually I came around. And, am I glad I did because it has been his' project' for the last 5 years ( and kept him out of my hair) From 1985 -2006 I owned and operated a small restaurant business in Hubbards. It started out as a bakery/bulk food (healthy/hippy) and morphed into a happening cafe with live music every Friday night.( I am a musician - alto saxophone, piano etc) I currently play in a R&B band, and operate the rental of this accomodation during the summer. We recently bought a trawler which is parked at the dock and usually you'll see Kelly taking care of it (sitting and having a beer on the back deck). We love this area! It is peaceful, not too far from the 'rest of the world' and of course we are surrounded by friends and family that you will find very interesting to meet if you so desire. One of my brothers is an actor(aka Jim Leahy, park superintendent from Trailer Park Boys) He always cruises by Northwest Cove in his boat the Emerald Princess but alas a late fall storm drove it onto the rocks so he might just be incognito in his small aluminum runabout. When the property is not rented we often have family gatherings here. We have had two wedding parties with 150+ attending.I have five beautiful grandchildren whom have spent many hours at this property while we garden, boat or just hang out on the large deck which is gated and safe for young children. This property is an eight minute walk from my lakefront home and has been a great project for us as it feels like we really do have the best of both worlds.
Jackie or Kelly purchased this house in 2006
the most photographed view in Lunenburg County, this property is very close to home and absolutely wonderful to visit. The sounds of the fishing boats and gulls swirling in the air, the quiet evenings and spaciousness of the interior were major motivators in the purchasing of this property. At first it seemed daunting. Originally the site of a small 'fishstore'(that is a hut on the water that fishermen stored nets and made bouys/floats etc during the cold winter days) it was added on to over the years and used as a small fishplant before our acquisition The large apartment was built before we purchased and we added the second apartment a year later. We recognize that it is difficult for large groups to find accommodations suitable for families, etc and thought that this would be a good place for that. It is large and therefore everyone can find a space of their own. Although...........most people park in the sunroom and spend hours looking out at the cove.
A lot of travellers like a home base to return to after their day away. This is that place.Just about everything to see in Southshore NS is within 45 min.travel and there is nothing more scenic than our view. You can stroll over to the Gov't dock and watch the fishermen bring in their catch or just ask our neighbors of the availability for fresh fish for supper. We have a lobster pot and boiler for lobster boils and a bar b que for hanging on the deck. There is a beautiful beach 4 miles away that is super for children and also a picnic beach just a mile away in Southwest Cove. We have good friends who run an adventure tourism business and they will bring kayaks to our dock if you wish to rent. There is a yoga loft 2 miles away with drop in classes nearly every day. There is a great little market Sat mornings in Hubbards and a great cafe 'The Trellis' where you can relax and eat some good food.Golf at Chester, a quick 30 min. drive offers some of the most spectacular ocean scenery you have ever seen at a golf course and there is a couple pubs and shops there as well.As we live so close by we are always ready to take care of our guest's requests. We have life jackets for the kids safety on the docks and if you can brave the temperatures can swim right off the dock.I'd never want to leave if I was vacationing here. It truly is a place to unwind and relax.
If I could sum up my overall impression of this property in one word I would say Idyllic! Kelly and Jackie were gracious hosts and made us feel at home at this wonderful property. My entire family enjoyed the time we spent together for 1 glorious week.We caught mackerel right off the dock and enjoyed beautiful sunsets and sunrises ! Thank you Jackie and Kelly .
Nick & the rest of the Crawford Family August 2016
Our extended Minnesota / Idaho family of 13 enjoyed a great week at Kelly & Jackies' place on Northwest Cove, then had to leave with more adventures from our wish list still undone. Guess we'll have to go back. Kelly is the ideal host who seems to really enjoy his guests, without overdoing it. This area appealed because of it's proximity to much of Nova Scotia's attractions, & measured up well. We caught cod & pollock on an excursion out of Lunenburg, but kids couldn't get enough of the mackerel & squid available from the home's private pier.... (made a fish-fry of the cod & mackerel, but passed on the calamari). Jumping waves & building sand castles at the beach up the road, outrunning the Fundy tides, hiking Cove Split Trail & steaming up a couple of our own lobster & mussel dinners were all rare & memorable treats for this bunch of fresh-water inlanders. A few even made a day trip up to Green Gables country on PEI.
It's a tastefully decorated & well outfitted property with nautical memorabilia, friendly interesting neighbors & lots of other useful stuff, all well maintained by the owners.
Don't see how you could help but enjoy a stay here.
We held our annual family reunion at this amazing property for a week. There was plenty of room for all of us (five couples plus two young children), including two completely outfitted kitchens and living rooms. We swam, fished, rented kayaks, relaxed and played games right on the property. We even watched a TV pilot being filmed a short distance away, so we weren’t the only ones to find the scenery stunning.
The location of the property was excellent, with something for everybody. Beautiful beaches were a short drive away, although the prize-winner was clearly Crescent Beach in Lockeport, about a two hour drive away. It is huge, incredibly clean, almost unpopulated, and had really great wave action to entertain both the adults and children. It is featured on the old Canadian fifty-dollar bill, and makes for a wonderful day trip.
We were happy with the grocery stores located in Hubbards and Tantallon. Also worth trying are the Trellis Cafe in Hubbards, and Kiwi Cafe in Chester. Good gluten-free options are available for those who are intolerant.
Last, but certainly not least, was the hospitality that was extended by our wonderful hosts Jackie and Kelly. From the very first contact for questions regarding the property, to our final goodbyes, they were congenial, professional, thoughtful and a pleasure to interact with. There are no hidden fees associated with the rental – something that is a rare find. They shared local information, and were directly responsible for some of our best moments and experiences of the week. A truly memorable vacation at a wonderful property!
We call Nova Scotia home. But now we have our family scattered across the North American continent. We feel so fortunate to have found this jewel in Northwest Cove that was able to accommodate 4 generations that gathered for our parents 80th birthday celebrations. In addition to our 13 family members, we held a birthday party with 60 guests! (many of the guests have asked us for information on renting this property for their own family gatherings) This home is spacious and welcoming. The views are spectacular. We thank Jackie and Kelly for preparing a ramp for wheelchair accessibility. We will definitely be returning next year!
From the first moment we arrived to the last minute of our stay, this was hands-down the best location of our trip. This is a very well kept property with relaxed owners that were there when we needed them and helped us connect with what was happening locally.
11 of us stayed for the week, from 5 to 50 (plus), we all had a blast. Rented kayaks, cooked lobster on the deck, swam right off the dock when we weren't catching squid or mackerel, easy day trips to Lunenburg and Peggy's Cove and Halifax, exactly as pictured here but way more fun than you can imagine.
Highly recommend this property, a great place to relax and immerse yourself in this quiet, small fishing village. I expect we will be back in the future.
This accommodation was even better than the photos, clean and well maintained and owners were available and helpful before and during our visit. We had 8 adults and an infant and a 5 year-old with us, and there was more than enough room for everyone. We visited all of the recommended sites and hidden gems and were never disappointed (Southwest Cove Beach/Lake, Bayswater Beach, Trellis Cafe, Shore Club Lobster Supper)
I would note that almost every site is a minimum of a 15 minute drive from the cottage and while you can walk to some of the hidden gems, it is a bit of a trek on a twisty road, so it is better to drive. The unit is currently all one level, so is accessible in that sense but to get down to the dock requires a walk down a decent grade or a number of stairs.
Wi-Fi was included in the rental, which wasn't on the VRBO site, and was a very pleasant surprise for our group. There are also 2 HD TV's and 3 bathrooms!
The owner took us for a 45 minute ride on his boat and we got to watch the series 'Haven' being filmed on the dock just across the Cove. The owners told us they plan on adding even more rooms, which makes this place fantastic for a large family or group of friends.
Our accommodation sits proud in Northwest Cove on the Aspotogan (Blandford) peninsula in Lunenburg county. For centuries the residents have earned their livelihood from the ocean and this seafaring tradition is alive and well. Tuna, mackeral, haddock, halibut, pollack and lobster are still brought ashore.
Hubbards, a'hub' community 10 mins, away has shopping, banking, restaurants, community spaces, Sat. night dances and a hugely popular weekend farmers market. If your desire is a 'local' vacation come stay with us. Historic Chester Halifax, Lunenburg, Mahone Bay, Peggy's Cove and the Annapolis Valley within an hour.
