Sunset Farm with its magnificent rebuilt 19th century barn sits on a hill in the center of Mount Desert Island, surrounded by fields and views of the mountains. It is on a quiet road that ends in Acadia National Park.
The house was built in the 1820s and renovated and expanded in the 1920s and the 1990s. It is perfect for one or two families, with maximum privacy for each. The house combines the charm of an early farm house with the comfort of a modern vacation home.
The farm has period furnishings, comfortable beds and modern kitchens. There are two modern baths and two baths with claw foot tubs. Two rooms have murals painted in the 1920s.
It is ideal for those looking for a relaxing vacation, surrounded by nature yet close to the towns on the island. Walk to buy organic vegetables at a nearby farm, spend the day at the lake and come home to comfortable, old fashioned rural ambiance.
Half the house can be rented for a smaller fee.
My husband, three children and myself spent a week in this spacious, historical home with my brother and his family. It was the perfect location for us, as we spent the week doing outdoor activities such as kayaking, rock climbing, biking, hiking and shopping. We enjoyed the porch so much, and had a beautiful view of sunsets and wildlife. It was the perfect opportunity for all 10 of us to stay in the same house and reconnect.
Beech Hill Farm, an organic farm stand, is a 5 minute walk down the road. A great day camp for kids is just up the road.
